Taipei Tianhou Temple:
One of Taipei's many temples dedicated to the Heavenly Queen (天后), this beautiful temple is located right in the core of Ximending Shopping District (西門町), hidden away behind all the glittering signs through its main entrance on Chengdu Road.
The temple has been in existence for the past 270 years as one of the 3 great temples of the Bangka (Wanhua) District, and was reconstructed after a fire, being completed in 1959 on Mazu's millennium anniversary.
This temple is dedicated to Mazu (媽祖), a deity worshipped by many of southern Chinese heritage and sea-faring people.

Lugang Mazu Temple is one of the oldest temples in Taiwan and dedicated to the worship of Mazu, the Goddess of the Sea. Mazu, whose family name was Lin, was born in A.D. 960 in coastal China. She passed away in A.D. 987, and hence became a deity who according to legend has since rescued innumerous fishermen and seafarers from sea disasters. The temple was built on land donated by Shih Shi-Bang in 1725. There have been three major renovations to the temple in 1815, 1874 and 1963. The architecture and decoration of the temple are something visitor can not miss.
Famous Matsu Temple, Goddess of The Sea Lukang, Taiwan
Matsu, also known as Mazu, is dedicated to the Chinese goddess of the sea who is said to protect fishermen and sailors. This flamboyantly decorated Taoist temple is divided into three halls and two courtyards. Filled at all hours with people burning incense and joss sticks to the gods and trying to divine the future, the Lukang temple is one of the most important in Taiwan.
There is even a Matsu pilgrimage yearly during which a statue of Matsu is carried 350 kilometers/217 miles around the island over an eight-day period! Can you just imagine that sight?

Procession from the Matsu Temple in Lukang, Taiwan
The music in this procession is amazing, and the tall figures with swinging arms are a sight. We love the bored looking troop of kids at the tail end. Taken outside the Matsu Temple in Lukang, Taiwan.

Taiwan 23 Lukang Mazu Temple Ceremonies Part 6 of 6
Taiwan is a very attractive country for people who like to travel around and see interesting places instead of laying on far away or busy beaches. In the past my family and I only visited the main cities of Taiwan like Taipei, Keelung, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung always carrying our baggage with us. In recent years we discovered it is more relaxed to stay a couple days in one city before going to the next city and take a local train or regional bus every day to discover smaller places and areas around the bigger cities. Public transport and taxis in Taiwan are relatively cheap compared to the rates in Europe so the daily surprise trips are affordable. With the video series “Attractive Taiwan – Interesting places” we want to share our impressions of the surprise places we have visited in the past years which can be seen as suggestions to others when planning a holiday to Taiwan. We hope you will enjoy watching each video.
