The Taihang Mountains ( pinyin: Tàiháng Shān) are a Chinese mountain range running down the eastern edge of the Loess Plateau in Shanxi, Henan and Hebei provinces. The range extends over 400 kilometres (250 mi) from north to south and has an average elevation of 1,500 to 2,000 metres (4,900 to 6,600 feet). The principal peak is Xiao Wutaishan (2,882 metres (9,455 feet)). The Taihang's eastern peak is Cangyan Shan in Hebei; Baishi Mountain forms its northern tip.
The name of Shanxi Province, meaning west of the mountains, derives from its location west of the Taihang Mountains,as does the name of Shandong Province (east of the mountains).
The Red Flag Canal is located on the south edge of the Taihang Mountains.
The Shitai Passenger Railway crosses under the Taihang Mountains via the Taihang Tunnel, which, at almost 28 kilometres (17 mi), is the third longest railway tunnel in China.

Aerial view of Suiyang Ancient Town (aka Shangqiu Ancient Town), at Shangqiu, Henan, People's Republic of China. The Old Town of Shangqiu is located in the southwest section of the city proper. Dating back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the brick construction retains great historic and cultural relics, especially in the traditional residential houses and courtyards characteristic of the period. At the time of visit, major redevelopment and reconstruction works were ongoing. Many historic structures being demolished and replaced by look-alike new buildings.

STORYLINE
China''s government on Tuesday announced that it had conducted its first national pollution census, mapping more than 5 (m) million sources of industrial, residential and agricultural waste throughout the country.
Vice Minister of Environmental Protection Zhang Lijun told reporters in Beijing that the census, for the first time, incorporated agricultural sources and all domestic sources beyond county government jurisdiction, as well as leachate from refuse disposal facilities.
The survey marks the first attempt by China to obtain a comprehensive picture of the country''s pollution sources.
Environmentalists like Greenpeace say it has far-reaching implications for China''s efforts to curb pollution emissions and prioritise environmental policies.
Greenpeace campaigner Ma Tianjie heralded the census as a big step forward.
It generates a very rich set of data which can be used to prioritise environmental policy in China and to better target the biggest polluters or the serious pollution problems, Ma said.
