Moon World is a part of a stretch of Badlands that cover a large swath of Southern Taiwan near the central mountain range. The rocks at Moon World are composed of mudstone, sandstone, shale, and chalk.

Tianliao Moon World is a tract of barren land between Chongde Village and Gutin Village of Tianliao District. It has a dreary and desolate beauty of desert and is famous for its similarity to the landscape of the Moon surface.
This queer terrain is called badlands in geography an adverse landscape caused by the strong erosion of rain and streams over the years due to rejuvenation of the earth's crust. The Tianliao Moon World sits in the valley of a small tributary of Erren River and used to have a dam for sediment storage to store water in the rain season. The sight of it was called yue-jing-nong-tang (Farm Pond on the Moon). However, the dam (farm pond) has been washed away over approximately a decade of time with the continuous scour of rain. Today, nothing but total desolation is what is left there.
Apart from the eye-catching Chinese-style Lan-Yue-Lou (Moon Take Multistory Building) standing in the proximity of the Moon World for visitors to rest and appreciate the sight, there are also Rihyue Temple, Fongyue Temple, Nihuo Spring (fire on mud spring), peculiar scenery, and a camping area for visitors to go.
How to get there?
*From Gangshan Station, ride a Bus. no. 8012 or R70B and drop to Moon world valley.
*From Tainan HSR Station, Bus no. 8042.

We made a brief stops in the town of Qishan, well-known for its bananas, and the Tianliao Moonworld, on our recent trip to Kaohsiung in southern Taiwan.

高雄-月世界 Tianliao Moon World and mud volcano (Tainan County)
Moon World in Tainan county is in the middle of some new development and there's a pretty decent visitor centre there with info on how to find some other nearby sights, including this mud volcano. Even then the mud volcano is a bit of a struggle to find, and we only got there with a bit of help from the local lighting it on fire at the end. Here's some more info on how to get to Moon World:

Moon World Landscape Park is a beautiful hidden destination of barren rocks surround walking trails at this protected area & tourist attraction. Prior to visiting here I have never seen this place on social media in my life. It was so incredible I couldn't believe it. And we had the place all to ourselves.

田寮月世界位在高雄縣北邊田寮鄉的崇德村、古亭村及內門鄉的瑞山村一帶，以二仁溪為邊界與台南縣為鄰。此外在崇德南方的燕巢鄉也另外有一個月世界，山丘陵脊薄如斧削，同樣也是惡地地形，附近還有養女湖﹝泥火山﹞、太陽谷﹝惡地﹞等風景點。月世界這種奇特的景觀在地理學上稱為惡地，係雨水與河水在質地軟弱、色呈青灰且略含鹽質的泥岩區，經年累月、強烈侵蝕而成的荒涼崎嶇之地形，泥岩本身顆粒細小，且膠結性十分疏鬆，透水性又低，因此遇雨水就變得十分軟滑，順坡向下流動，植物生長相當困難，所以到處童山濯濯，生成泥岩裸露，稜脊和溝谷密佈是泥岩惡地形的一種特有景觀。台灣屬於地殼不穩的造山運動帶，又是個島弧地形、造山運動強烈、隆升速率很快，因此惡地就容易產生。田寮鄉四面環山，境內丘陵起伏，山谷河流交錯，地形十分特殊，西側大崗山是石灰岩地形，受到雨水沖刷，形成尖峰利脊，寸草不生的特殊地形景觀，有著淒涼荒漠之美，恍如廣月寒宮，因而被稱為月世界，吸引遊客絡繹於途，也造就田寮鄉成為著名的土雞城，到月世界吃土雞，也成為相當受歡迎的熱門旅遊行程。在民國70年時，高雄縣政府在此地建了一座攬月樓供遊客休憩賞景；攬月樓的設計風格採用中國涼亭式建築，在一片土黃色的荒原景觀中，顯得格外顯目；民眾可由攬月樓旁小徑攀登一段陡坡，上至平台可登高遠眺，俯瞰月世界全景，田寮月世界附近並有日月禪寺、峰月宮、翠幻谷、泥火泉等據點，風景奇特可供一遊。
