Broadway musicals 'Come From Away' debut in non-english speaking country
The creative minds behind the Broadway hit musical Come From Away held a press conference in Beijing on Thursday, announcing that it will open in China at the Beijing Tianqiao Performing Arts Center on April 23, 2020. This is the first time the show will be performed in a non-English speaking country. To reveal more details about the critically-acclaimed musical, creative consultant Michael Rubinoff, musical director Luke Hunter and actor Zoe Gertz, who plays the leading role, are visiting China. The team spoke exclusively with CGTN after the press conference.

National Ballet of China wins domestic audience with classic
Numerous renowned foreign ballet companies, such as the Bolshoi, Marinsky and Stuttgart all love to perform in China. Competition for the Chinese market has, in recent years, become fierce. So how is the National Ballet of China gearing up for this competition?
Don Quixote has been brought back, this time, in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the birth of legendary dancer Rudolf Nureyev. He was the artistic director of the first production of Don Quixote at the National Ballet of China in 1985. Thanks to Rudolf, almost 20 years have gone by, the spirit of Don Quixote is still very much alive.
The errant knight appeared before a full house at the premiere of Don Quixote on Wednesday at Beijing's Tianqiao Theatre. The original ballet is the result of Austrian composer Ludwig Minkus and French dancer and choreographer Marius Petipa. However, it was Rudolf Nureyev who condensed the ballet into three acts and helped popularize it in the West with his own version of the ballet.
The National Ballet of China first adapted Don Quixote in 1985 under the tutelage of Nureyev, followed by a first revival 12 years later. With the second revival of this western classic a world-calibre team has been assembled.

Singer and performer Li Yugang has presented his new version of the classic musical drama “Princess Zhaojun” at the Tianqiao Performing Arts Center in Beijing, marking the international premiere of the stage epic. The drama combines traditional Chinese music and dancing. Well-known for his stunning performance and cross-dressing roles on stage, Li has spent six years preparing the updated version of the drama, which sees him performing about 30 original songs and dances using Peking Opera techniques.

Full Frame Close Up: Persian Puppets Go to China
Shadow play, or shadow puppetry, is an ancient art form that started in China, which explains why “Feathers of Fire: A Persian Epic” is currently touring in Shanghai and heading to Beijing later in the month.
“Feathers of Fire” was conceived, designed, and {is} directed by award-winning filmmaker, designer, and illustrator Hamid Rahmanian, was born and educated in Iran.
It’s a stage production that combines puppetry, art, and history, and has drawn big, sold-out crowds in the U.S. and around the world. It’s a shadow play for all ages – inspired by the ancient Persian poem “Shahnameh.”
Oscar-winning director Francis Ford Coppola saw “Feathers of fire” three times during its run in San Francisco and calls it “One of the great epics of all time…brought to life in a spectacular fashion.” Simply put, it’s a show like no other.
Asieh Namdar sat down with Rahmanian in New York City to talk about his passion for the arts, his mission, and his message in this week’s Full Frame Close Up.

Beijing Dance Festival
The Beijing Dance Festival is one of the biggest celebration of dance in Beijing and among cities in China with more than 300 dance artists, over 200 dance students and more than 5000 audience attendance congregate in Beijing every summer. These participants come from cities throughout China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, as well as across the world from North & Central America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.
The Beijing Dance Festival is co-presented by BeijingDance/LDTX, Hong Kong City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) China Dance Development and Beijing TianQiao Performing Arts Center. The annual Beijing Dance Festival began in 2008 as a one-week festivity alternatingly focus between international and Chinese artists. Since 2012, the Festival had combined both international and Chinese artists and expanded to become of two-weeks duration.
The two-week Beijing Dance Festival is composed of two parts: First part as an Educational Week followed by second as Performance Week. The educational week includes an intensive six-day Dance Camp taught by an international faculty. The performance week composes of three modules: Focus presenting full evening productions; Springboard showcasing works that are more edgy and daring; and Youth Dance Marathon (YDM) offering an open platform especially catered for young choreographer to showcase his/her original works.
「北京舞蹈双周」是国内极具规模的现代舞盛事。每年夏天迎来300多位舞蹈艺术家，200多位舞蹈学生，以及超过5000观众人次参与其中。他们分别来自全国各省市、港澳台地区，以及美洲、欧洲、非洲及亚洲等各国。
北京舞蹈双周由北京雷动天下现代舞团和香港城市当代舞蹈团中国舞蹈发展计划及北京天桥艺术中心联合主办。北京舞蹈双周缘起于2008年，原为期一周的活动，轮番举办国际或全国性舞蹈展演；自2012年起，此活动扩展至两周。

Pom Pom Wang
Pom Pom Wang is a drama producer and current director of the Performing Arts Center of Beijing Tianqiao Zenith Investment Group.
She completed a Masters Degree in Arts Management at the University of South Australia.
In 2006, she went to Europe, sponsored by European Union, to study the influence of culture and art in the process of European Integration. During her staying in Europe and through the study of European culture and artistic innovation, she also became aware of the charm of her home culture.
In 2007, she went back China and joined Poly Culture Group engaged in performing arts management and operations. During this period, she was able to work and present many excellent live shows to the Chinese market and meanwhile she started her own drama productions.
She has been involved with several culturally relevant musical and drama productions and intends on producing more in the future.
Pom Pom credits her time in Australia for making her life more beautiful. She says the reason is whilst there, she had lots of opportunities – to work with artists and arts project managers; to work in an arts organisation. All the real practice, which complimented her course, gave her a lot of help and made her “dreams come true”.

Titled Feathers of Fire: A Persian Epic, the show is inspired by the 10th-century classic Persian epic Shahnameh and tells the legend of Zaul and Rudabeh, two star-crossed lovers of old Persia.
