Journey to Xinjiang-Barkol Lake
This video of Barkol Lake was shot by the CGTN team on Friday in Hami, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Barkol Lake is one of the biggest tourism highlights in the area. It is a lagoon in the Barkol Basin, filled by melted snow from Tianshan Mountains. Barkol Basin is the region's second largest grassland, covering nearly 200,000 square kilometers. Herdsmen with sheep and horses flock to the lakeside. Summer is the best season to visit Barkol Lake since it is a good time to see traditional Kazakh horse racing and sheep hunting. In recent years, Barkol's travel economic development has increased thanks to continued governmental efforts in infrastructure and publicity. #JourneytoXinjiang #Xinjiang

Kanas Lake (Chinese: 喀纳斯湖; pinyin: Kānàsī Hú, Uyghur: قاناس كۆلى, ULY: Qanas köli, UYY: Ⱪanas köli, Xiao'erjing: كَانَاسِ خٗ) is a lake in Altay Prefecture, Xinjiang, China. The lake is located in a valley in the Altai Mountains, near the very northern tip of Xinjiang, and the province's borders with Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and Russia. The lake was formed around 200,000 years ago during the Quaternary period as a result of glacier movement. The crescent moon shaped lake has an estimated water storage capacity of 53.8 billion cubic meters, coupled with an average depth of around 120 meters.[1]
The Kanas River, flowing out of the lake, later merges with the Hemu River to form the Burqin River, which itself discharges into the Irtysh River at Burqin Town, the county seat of Burqin County.

A hundred million years ago, this place was a huge freshwater lake. In the warm and humid climate, tropical trees and shrubs grew densely. Dinosaurs such as stegosaurus and pterosaurs lived and multiplied. Afterwards, due to the crustal movements, the place rose gradually into a shale and sandstone land. After eons of winds and rains erosion, the present yardang landforms were formed in the desert - with various shapes and an average height of 10m. Some mounds look like castles, temples, horses and lions. Your imagination will be brought into full play.
Being one of the few typical wind erosion physiognomies in the world, it is called Ghost Town of the world (100,000 sq m) due to its eerie sound of the wind. It is located in the northern edge of Junggar Basin, between the Altay Mountains and Tianshan Mountains, 100km away from Karamay city, in Wuerhe (Urho), Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Strong howling winds (gales of force 8 on the Beaufort scale) blow everyday.
This enchanting desert is an amazing off-the-beaten-path spot to watch the sunrise and sunset. There is no shelter at all, so be prepared to dance in the rain.

Ans: We hitchhiked from Urumqi to Karamay (1 night). Then we took a shared taxi to Wuerhe.

A two-week trip through Western China, XINJIANG （新疆） province or Eastern Turkestan, along the ancient Silk Route. The trip took us first to the city of Kasghar ((喀什) and its bustling markets, the majestic Stone Fort situated in the staggering landscape of the Tashkorgan (塔什库尔干) Tajik Autonomous County, the Kizilsu (克孜勒苏) Kyrgyz Autonomous Prefecture boasting the beautiful Karakul lake (喀拉库勒湖) and the towering peak of Muztagh Ata (慕士塔格峰). Our journey went on to the the eastern parts of the province and HuoYanShan (火焰山, Flaming Mountains) in Akso (阿克苏) county, which harbour the centuries-old Bezeklik caves (柏孜克里克千佛洞), a stunning canyon (天山大峡谷) and are home to an ambitious but tired young tour guide named Stone. Continuing east, we reached the fertile valley of TuLuFan (吐魯番), where we learned about the private lives of Chinese karaoke hostesses and their friends. We treated ourselves to the world's finest wine and ran into the cast of the newest Uyghur blockbuster movie in the nearby Grape Valley (葡萄沟). Landscapes in Xinjiang change fast - our crew eventually found itself in the alpine-like hills of NaLaTi (那拉提) grasslands and hosted by the local Kazakh ethnic population.
