2011 Dec - Dehang Hunan, a little serene Miao hamlet
Dehang is a little Miao hamlet in the northwest of Jishou, in western Hunan province. We were a couple travelling by bus from Fenghuang (Phoenix town) to this little picturesque countryside in December 2011.
Backpacked and armed with our reliable Lonely Planet and broken spoken mandarin, we managed to reach this interesting little village. The Miao people were very friendly and accommodating. This little gem was not packed with busloads of tourists, which one might have seen in more popular spots in China, as we explored the village and its surrounding geological karst park. There were many delightful short day treks, such as Nine Dragon Stream scenic area where the fantastic Liusha waterfall descends from the hill above and Yuquanxi scenic area where we climbed up the steps to Tianwen platform to view the breathtaking karst hills looming around us. A fantastic little gem tucked away from the hustle and bustle indeed!
