Tibetan Monastery in Bodhgaya, Bihar - In the eras following the 'mahaparinirvana' of Lord Gautam Buddha, His disciples got divided into different sects with vivid thoughts. However, all of them worked towards the same goal - To carry on the teachings of the Buddha, which further led to the foundation of numerous monasteries all around the world, among which the Tibetan monastery in Bodh Gaya, Bihar holds an eminent place.
Established in the year 1938, the Tibetan Mahayana monastery stands across the road from the Maha Bodhi temple complex, the place where the Buddha attained enlightenment in 528 BCE. The monastery houses a huge dharmachakra or the wheel of law, which is 10 meter high metal drum painted in golden and red colour and they say one can be free of all the sins committed, if one spins the wheel three times continuously from left to right. The monastery also consists of an image of Maitreya Buddha, which is believed to be the future incarnation of the Buddha.
Decorated with the Tibetan scriptures, thangkas and other Buddhist symbols and objects, the Tibetan monastery is also a meditation centre and conducts courses based on meditation and the principles of Buddhism. It also shelters the Buddhist tourists who come to visit the holy place of Bodh Gaya.

Bodh Gaya: Reviving ancient Buddhist dance
At the Tergar monastery in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, the long queues are an indication of the event to follow - a rare performance of the Garchen Tscechu Cham, a sacred lama dance of the Kagyu Sect of Tibetan Budhism. It begins with an invocation which is believed to help purify the land. The music is played by a chanting master, their instruments coordinated with the meditative movement of the dancers. The dancers are the sect's most eminent monks, led by the absolute spiritual head of the Kagyu sect - the 17th Karmapa Trinley Dorjee. He has been living in exile in Dharamsala after he fled Tibet in 2004 at the age of 14.

1. Thiksey Monastery: Thiksey village, Ladakh
Thiksey Monastery is the largest monastery in central Ladakh district in Jammu and Kashmir. It is situated 18 kms from Leh in the Indus Valley. The monastery is famous for its architecture and stunning location with its buildings structured in a hierarchal order.
2. Hemis Monastery: Hemis, Ladakh
Hemis monastery is believed to be the wealthiest monastery in Leh, The monastery was founded by the 1st incarnation of Stagsang Raspa Nawang Gyatso in 1630, when he was invited to Ladakh by the king Singay Namgial who offered him a religious estate in the region.
3. Stakna Monastery: Stakna, Ladakh
Stakna Gompa or Stakna Monastery is a Buddhist Monastery located approximately 45 kms outside Leh. The monastery was built on a hill shaped like a tiger’s nose and so its name was derived.
4. Thai Monastery: Bodhgaya, Bihar
The Thai Monastery or Buddhist Temple in Bodh Gaya was built in 1956 by Thailand’s Monarch on the request of the then, Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to strengthen relations between the two countries. It is unique and the only Thai Temple in India. This temple displays the elegance of Thai architecture.
5. Og Min Ogyen Mindroling Monastery: Dehradun, Uttarakhand
The Og Min Mindroling Monastery is located in Clement Town area of Dehradun and is locally known as the Tibetan Monastery. The Mindroling Monastery is a major study center for Buddhist monks as it has a college for advanced Buddhist Studies.
6. Ralang Monastery: Ravangla, Sikkim
The Ralang Monastery is located around 6 kms from Ravangla, in the southern portion of Sikkim. As per records, the monastery was constructed post the pilgrimage of the of the fourth Chogyal. After his return, the Karmapa performed the Rabney or blessing.
7. Shechen monastery: Bodhgaya, Bihar
In 1996 Rabjam Rinpoche, with the participation of dedicated volunteers and donors built the Shechen Monastery. The monastery complex is located a few minutes’ walk from the Great Stupa. The main building houses a temple with frescoes depicting the life of the Buddha, painted by teachers and students from the Tsering Art School.
8. Bon Monastery: Kewzing, Sikkim
The Bon monastery at Kewzing, the only one of its kind in Sikkim, was established in the latter half of 1980’s and is a symbol of the determination of the Bonpo people in Kewzing to preserve their religious traditions.
9. Gonjang Monastery: Gangtok, Sikkim
The foundation stone of Gonjang Monastery in Gangtok was laid by H.H. the XIVth Dalai Lama in the year 1981. It started with a small group of monk students in the Sheda but has emerged as one of the prime centers of Buddhist learning in Sikkim.
10.Tawang Monastery: Arunachal Pradesh
Tawang Monastery, in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, is the largest monastery in India and second in size worldwide only to the Potala Palace in Tibet. It is situated at an elevation of about 10,000 feet (3,000 m), with a commanding view of the Tawang River Valley, which comprises snow-capped mountains and coniferous forests.

Buddhist monks pray at Buddha Temple in Dehradun, Uttarakhand
Buddha Temple in Clement town area in Dehradun in Uttarakhand. Buddhist monks can be seen praying in the temple. Buddhist monks play prayer drums while praying.
The Tibetan Buddhist temple is one of Dehradun’s famous landmarks and is known for its beautiful architecture, impressive interiors and peaceful surroundings. The wall paintings inside the temple depicting the life of Lord Buddha are simply spectacular. The temple was constructed in 1965 by the Tibetan community in India as an imitation of a Tibetan Monastery. Built with the aim to preserve and promote Tibetan culture in India, the Tibetan Buddhist Temple is built in a Japanese architectural style and the temples main stupa is 220 feet high. Spread over five floors, the Tibetan Buddhist Temple contains statues of Buddha and ethereal wall paintings. The temple also has an open air viewing platform from where you can enjoy 360 degrees view of the city of Dehradun. Another major attraction of the temple is a 130 feet tall statue of Buddha, which was dedicated to the Dalai Lama. The temple complex also comprises of a beautiful garden and a bookstore which stocks Tibetan books.

Built in Chinese architectural style by the Chinese government and the Buddhist monks, the Chinese monastery though a very small structure in Bodh Gaya, is worth visiting. Dedicated to the Lord Buddha, the monastery houses a Chinese temple, which is further an excellent illustration of the amalgamation of the Chinese architecture with religion. The monastery is located near the Maha Bodhi temple complex and is open for the visitors from 7am to 5 pm with lunch in between.
Located in southern part of the Indian state of Bihar, Bodh Gaya is one of the four major sacred places along with Lumbini, Sarnath and Kushinagar, venerated by the Buddhists from all across the globe. Named after the Lord Buddha, Bodh Gaya reveres the Buddha's nirvana and hosts numerous temples and monasteries dedicated in the honour of the Lord Buddha.

The World Peace Ceremony in Bodh Gaya, India

1. Bodh Gaya, Bihar- Where Buddha achieved enlightenment
Bodh Gaya is undoubtedly the center of Buddhism in India. It’s the most important of all Buddhist places in India. Descendents of the Bodhi Tree, under which Buddha attained enlightenment can still be seen, having survived much from both nature and man. Equally fascinating are the Mahabodhi temple and an 80 feet tall statue of Lord Buddha.
2. Leh, Jammu and Kashmir- Monasteries and Mountains
Along with dreamy sceneries and landscapes, Leh houses some of the most distinct and colourful Buddhist India cultures and monasteries. The area has numerous monasteries, most of which are the richest, largest and oldest imprints of Buddhism in India.
3. Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh- Echoes of Buddha’s first sermons
Sarnath marks the beginning of Buddha’s sermons and preaching. It was in a deer park, in this very district that Buddha gave his first sermons, after enlightenment. Sarnath is one of the four sacred Buddhist places in India with structures such as Dhamekh Stupa and Chaukhandi Stupa that celebrate its historical significance.
4.Rumtek Monastery, Sikkim- A colorful, living, breathing monastery
Sikkim houses about 200 monasteries. Yet this one stands out given its richness in color, culture and sheer grandeur. The monastery becomes all the more mesmerising during the mask dances that it holds around May-June and the Tibetan new year
5. Mindrolling Monastery, Dehradun- A Buddhist college and a magnificent Stupa
Mindrolling Monastery is a storehouse of knowledge and bits of history of Buddhism in India. The Ngagyur Nyingma College is one of the most prominent Buddhist Indian institutes to study and practice Buddhism.
6. Namdroling Nyingmapa Tibetan Monastery and Golden temple, Karnataka – A glittering, colorful spirituality
This monastery stands out not only because of its geography but also due to its generosity in the colour, glitter and sparkle that it adds to spirituality. The grand gold statues of Lord Buddha, ornamented with the richest tints and cultures are awe-inspiring.
7. Sanchi, Madhya Pradesh – Ashoka’s Great Stupa
Sanchi is almost synonymous to the Great Stupa here commissioned by Emperor Ashoka, the oldest stone monument in India.
8. Tawang Monastery, Arunachal Pradesh- A tourist’s favorite
This largest monastery in India is popular as the rich, grand and colorful center of spirituality and knowledge that it is. The locals know the monastery as Galden Namgey Lhatse which means ‘celestial paradise in a clear night’ and the monastery justifies this name in every sense.
9. Rajgir, Bihar- A sparkling white Stupa and a sacred cave
Rajgir is known as one of Buddha’s favorite places where he gave two of his most famous sermons. The Saptparni cave here housed the first Buddhist council while the Gridhakuta hill was where Budha gave the Lotus Sutra and the Prajnaparamita, two of his imporatnt sutras.
10. Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh- A spiritual treasure
Dharamsala – Mcleodganj is home to all that you can ask from a Buddhist place in India. From a Vipassana meditation center, numerous Buddhist meditation centers and schools to Dalai Lama’s official residence and a grand monastery full of colours and chants.
11. Vaishali, Bihar- Of several encounters with Lord Buddha
Vaishali fosters important historical, cultural and religious significance for Buddhism in India. Buddha visited the city quite often and the second Buddhist council was held here. Buddha also came here in the fifth year of his enlightenment in the rains.
12. Spiti, Himachal Pradesh- Of beautiful monasteries and meditation caves
Spiti, other than landscapes which are unique and breathtaking, has a number of monasteries that foster immense color, culture, artworks, scriptures and statues for a fascinating experience ornamented with these spiritual and cultural treasure.
13. Dhamma Setu, Tamil Nadu- A meditation center brimming with freshness and greenery
This Vipassana meditation center in Chennai, is a recent center with huge capacity and hundreds of individual meditation cells. The 10-day courses are held twice every month.
14. Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh- Where Buddha attained Mahaparinirvana
Kushinagar is one of the 4 sacred places for Buddhists in India as this is where at the age of 81, Buddha passed away. This is also the site of his last lesson where he said “All things must pass. Decay is inherent in all things”.
