Tibetan Village Darjeeling.Tibetan Refugee Self Help Center.
Darjeeling (Beng. দার্জিলিং, Eng. Darjeeling, Nepalese. दार्जीलिङ) is a city in India, in the far north of West Bengal, in the eastern Himalayas at an altitude of 2185 m. Built by the British as a colonial hill station (English hill station).
Darjeeling is the coolness of India, low-floating clouds, fog, tea plantations, stunning snowy views of the Himalayas and Mount Kanchendzhang, and the surviving Tibetan Culture of the Darjeeling Self-Help Center for refugees from Tibet who followed the Dalai Lama to India in 1959. In the village there is a temple, a museum of tibet, a hand-made shop and workshops, a school. Nice to meet locals! They are different, beautiful, simple, meditative ... The place is curious! Interesting! Dive into another era! In another life!

Tibetan Refugee Self Help Center
This complex was setup by Tibetan refugees in Darjeeling on October 2, 1959 after they followed Dalai Lama and escaped from Tibet. The refugees adopted the principle of self help so that they could become self-independent and completely rehabilitate themselves in a foreign country, which they did gracefully.
They received the site Hill Side measuring some 4 acres of area from the state government to build the center. It's located on a hill top that can be approached from Lebong Cart Road by car.

Darjeeling 1965: Short story of the Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Centre Darjeeling
The Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Centre was started on October 2, 1959. Following the dramatic escape of His Holiness the Dalai Lama during that period of mayhem, thousands of our fellow countrymen, leaving hearth and home, fled into neighboring countries so they could live as free human beings. The overwhelming majority of the refugees had brought nothing with them apart from the clothes they wore and what little provisions they could carry with them as they began the long and difficult trek over the Himalayas.
Fortunately, the dramatic events in Tibet such as the Lhasa Uprisings, the miraculous escape of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the tragic plight of the displaced Tibetans who began pouring into India and other neighboring states, captured the attention of the entire world. National and international voluntary agencies set up emergency relief programmes to feed, clothe and give temporary shelter to the newly arrived refugees. In terms of immediate need the challenge was met. But this was only the beginning.
Driven out of their homeland into a totally different environment and without any knowledge of the language, customs and social institutions of the countries where they had sought refuge, the long-term re-habilitation of the refugees posed innumerable difficulties. But right from the initial stages, we recognized that the need of the hour was the determination to stand on our own feet and rely first and fore most on our own effort- in short, the spirit of Self-Help.
In fact, it is no exaggeration to say that without Self-Help there can be no rehabilitation - be it cultural, economic, psychological, social or spiritual. Outside assistance is, of course, necessary. But no matter how generous others prove to be, no refugee could ever be rehabilitated in the fullest sense of the word without the empowerment that comes from Self-Help. This vital element could only come from within our own community, from within our own selves.
This road map led to the formation of a ten member committee in Darjeeling to organize and establish a rehabilitation centre to be known as the TIBETAN REFUGEE SELF HELP CENTRE. The founding members of the committee were: Mrs. Gyalo Thondup, President, Mr. T Lawang, Mr. G. Tesur, Mr. Tenzing Norgay, Mr, & Mrs. Joksari, Mr. T Tethong, Monsignor Benjamin, Mr. Chumbay Tsering and Miss Tesur. Later we had the pleasure of welcoming the following new members into the committee: Mrs. Laden-la, Col. & Mrs. Thapa and Mr. Dilip Bose. The current members of the committee are Mr. Karma Choeying Honorary Chairman, Khedroob Thondup Honorary President, Dr. Tanpa Thondup Honorary Vice President, Chimay Rinchen General Secretary and Treasurer, Mr. Lakchung, Mr. Dorjee Tseten and Mr. Jampa Tenzing. Other Members are Mr. Lhawang T Pulger, Rt. Rev. Stephan Lepcha, Dr. T Wangdi and Mr. Dawa Tshering.
The initial fund was raised locally through subscriptions, donations, charity shows and an exhibition football match. This was augmented shortly afterwards by contributions from a number of voluntary agencies through the Central Relief Committee (India), notably CARE, Catholic Relief Services, National Christian Council, The Red Cross, World Veterans Federation, American Friends Committee and Church World Service, as well as numerous local and foreign individuals and well wishers. Invaluable aid was also received from a number of organizations in the form of food grains, clothes, milk powder medicines and allied equipment.
When the Centre started nearly 50 years ago, there were just four workers. Today the Centre is home to 650 refugees. Over the years, the Centre has undertaken multifarious activities ranging from the production of handicrafts and training of artisans and craftsman to the care of the sick, the old, the orphaned and the needy. In 1961 the Centre was fully registered as a Charitable organisation under Indian law. It has also received exemption from income tax on all gifts and donations made to it
SITE:
We were very fortunate in acquiring a most suitable site right from the beginning. Hill Side, a small estate comprising almost four acres was originally leased, and eventually bought from St. Joseph's College. The site was ideally suited to our purpose. There was sufficient space to build and develop a small community outside the town but conveniently approachable by road.
Moreover, Hill Side had a special significance for Tibetans for it was here that the Great Thirteenth Dalai Lama had spent His exile in India between 1910 and 1912 following Chinese aggression of Tibet at that time. The original house had long collapsed leaving nothing except the foundation and some crumbling walls. But the spot had been hallowed by the Great Thirteenth Dalai Lama, one of the greatest of Tibetan leaders and a great champion of Tibet's independence, who by His foresight and political wisdom, preserved Tibet's national sovereignty during his life time.

Self improvement, or change toward oneself, is a self-guided improvement—financially, cannily, or inwardly frequently with a significant mental premise. Numerous distinctive self improvement gathering projects exist, each with its own particular center, strategies, related convictions, advocates and at times, pioneers. Self improvement society, especially Twelve-Step society, has given some of our most powerful new dialect: recuperation, useless families, and codependency.
Self improvement regularly uses freely accessible data or help supportive networks, on the Internet and also in individual, where individuals in comparative circumstances join together. From right on time cases in self-driven legitimate practice[4] and home-spun counsel, the undertones of the saying have spread and frequently apply especially to instruction, business, brain science and psychotherapy, generally disseminated through the famous type of self improvement guides.
As per the APA Dictionary of Psychology, potential profits of self improvement gatherings that experts will most likely be unable to give incorporate fellowship, passionate backing, experiential learning, character, compelling parts, and a feeling of belonging.
Gatherings connected with wellbeing conditions may comprise of patients and parental figures. And in addition offering long-lasting parts imparting encounters, these wellbeing gatherings can get to be help supportive networks and clearing-houses for instructive material. The individuals who help themselves by learning and recognizing about wellbeing issues might be said to embody self improvement, while self improvement gatherings could be seen all the more as distributed back in.

Tibetan | Forever Exiled | Darjeeling Hills
It was the Lhasa uprising of 1959, when the Fourteenth Dalai Lama had fled for his life from Tibet and took shelter in India against the threat from Chinese Government. At least one-lakh followers came with him and saved their existence. Indian Government had given them shelter but not any permanent refugee status or citizenship. They thus lived the life in exile. They are scattered in different places of India as a certain section of Tibetan had settled in Darjeeling hills. They had built the Tibetan Refugee Self Help Center there and that has been functioning quite successfully till now. They produce their Tibetan handicrafts in the center and sell them to the market to earn their revenues. Tibetan carpets, woodcraft, leather, Tibetan shawls and apron are the main products they produce. They still keep nurture their memory their deep feelings about Dalai Lama and the beautiful Tibet, and praise them through their music and other cultural practices.
