Costa Rican Spanish 101
Check out this video from a student abroad in Costa Rica. Share your comments and explore other CEA videos.
Headed to Costa Rica? Costa Rican Spanish has distinctive accents, vocabulary, and grammar compared to Spanish from other countries. Check out Cailin’s helpful language tips so you’re not caught off guard!
Accent
The Costa Rican accent differences from other Central American dialects in these ways:
• Lleismo- is a Sounds like a soft “jay” and it replaces the “ll” sound in other dialects.
• In San Jose, they don’t pronounce double r’s. So, if you can’t trill your r’s, you won’t have to worry about it here. “Perro” sounds like “pero”
• The “r” at the end of a word sometimes makes a slight whistle or “Sh” sound. (“amor” is “amorsh”)
Word and phrases
• You probably already know about “pura vida” meaning “pure life.” It is a response to comments like “Como Esta” and “que tal?” Sometimes it can even be used to as a response to “Gracias.”
• “Tico” is a term that refers to a Costa Rican person.
• “Mae” is a mix between “dude” and “bro” often used as a filler in conversation. Think of the way Americans say “like” frequently between thoughts. In Costa Rican Spanish it is “Mae”.
• “Idiai” While this one is difficult to explain, you may hear friends open a conversation by saying “idiai.” Other times “Idiai” shows attentiveness in the middle of a conversation and means “go on.”
• “Tranquila” is used all the time to mean “don’t worry, calm down, it’s not a big deal.” This replaces the literal phrase “no se preocupe” because Costa Ricans are famous for rarely saying no. A lot of times if they do say “no se preocupe” it is when they are actually conveying the word “no.” But when they say “tranquila,” they mean, “don’t worry.”
• “Estar de gloma”- Literally translates to “I am of Glue,” but the phrase means that someone feels hungover.
Grammar
In Costa Rica and Nicaragua, locals use the Vos Conjugation of verbs, but, because of formality, most of the time it is safe to stick to Usted. Using VOS shifts the emphasis or the accent to the end of the word instead of the beginning of the word And the same accent rules can be followed for irregular verbs. The Tu conjugation is recognized as well.
