Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve, Canberra, Australia
Following the production of my previous video which highlighted concerns about 'the detention of children behind bars' in places of asylum; and 'the cruelty of caging animals in cramped conditions'... I decided I needed an escape to my favourite retreat here in Canberra, Australia. I took my camera with me... and this video features a selection of scenes that I photographed.
How nice it was for me to escape the madness of this world if only for the one day... what a shame it is however, that children and animals in many parts of the world are not afforded the same freedoms that I myself take for granted !
Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve in Canberra, the Australian Capital Territory, is set within a beautiful valley... framed by granite-topped mountains. It offers outstanding wildlife and natural experiences, and is home to wetlands, grasslands, and eucalypt forest habitats. The mountains offer an opportunity to experience a sub-alpine wilderness... whilst the valley floor provides a wide range of recreational opportunities to enjoy.
Tidbinbilla forms part of the Australian Alps National Parks - a series of parks and reserves that span Australia's high country.
'The Sanctuary' at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve offers fabulous opportunities to experience nature. A wetlands ecosystem, surrounded by bushland, and protected by a predator-proof fence... it provides sanctuary for a range of native animals.
Recognised as Canberra's leading ecotourism attraction... Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve offers fun and interesting opportunities to find out more about the environment and the many conservation initiatives managed by Tidbinbilla staff.
Walking trails offer an active means to explore the environment at Tidbinbilla... with marked trails ranging from an easy 15 minutes stroll... to an all-day bushwalk.
Aboriginal people have had a continuous association with the Tidbinbilla area for at least 21,000 years. Clans travelled through or stayed in this country... trading, celebrating marriages, and undertaking important ceremonies, such as men's initiation.
Walk the 'Birrigai Time Trail' or 'Hanging Rock Trail' to find out more about Aboriginal culture at Tidbinbilla.
The Tidbinbilla Valley also reflects the European history of the area. Century old rammed earth cottages, and evidence of farming and eucalyptus oil distillation, provide graphic reminders of the pioneers who tried to make a life here from the mid-1800s.

Stella lala

Canberra Travel Guide - Memorable Australian Moments
Canberra Travel Guide - Memorable Australian Moments
Canberra is the capital city of Australia. The city is located in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), an enclave in the south-east of New South Wales. Canberra is a planned city, with national monuments, museums and galleries built around a large artificial lake. As a bush capital, Canberra is also a great place to enjoy the outdoors, with excellent cycling, gardens, parks, bush walking and nature reserves.
Canberra was established in 1913 as the capital for the newly federated Australian nation. The ACT was excised from New South Wales and put under the control of the federal government. The creation of the planned city was not without critics who claimed it was a waste of a good sheep pasture.
Canberra's design was conceived by the American architects Walter Burley and Marion Mahony Griffin, built on the shores of an artificial lake (Lake Burley Griffin). Populated at first largely by politicians and public servants, it took time to develop its own identity and culture. Extensive building of national facilities and a concerted effort to develop public institutions in the city have made it an interesting destination.
Lake Burley Griffin divides central Canberra. The central shopping and commercial area, known as Civic, is on the north side and the parliamentary triangle and embassy area is on the south side. National institutions are likewise divided, examples being the National Museum of Australia and the Australian War Memorial on the north side and the National Library and National Gallery of Australia on the south side.
There are suburbs surrounding central Canberra, and also suburbs surrounding several outlying town centres. These town centres are, Belconnen and Gungahlin to the north, and Tuggeranong and Woden to the south. The ACT also has surrounding towns, such as Murrumbateman, which boasts a strong cool climate wine selection. The historic village of Hall is also on the outskirts of Canberra.
While Canberra on the whole is not walkable by any standards, some parts of it, including Civic and the central part of the northern shore of Lake Burley Griffin, as well as the sights at the southern shore of Lake Burley Griffin, are possible to tackle on foot. For transfers between suburbs, the best options are the bus, the car, and the bicycle.
As the seat of the government of Australia, Canberra is home to many important institutions of the federal government, national monuments and museums. This includes Parliament House, the official residence of the monarch's representative the Governor-General, the High Court and numerous government departments and agencies. It is also the location of many social and cultural institutions of national significance such as the Australian War Memorial, the Australian National University, the Royal Australian Mint, the Australian Institute of Sport, the National Gallery, the National Museum and the National Library. The city is also home to many important institutions of the Australian Defence Force including the Royal Military College Duntroon and the Australian Defence Force Academy. It also hosts the majority of foreign embassies in Australia as well as regional headquarters of many international organisations, not-for-profit groups, lobbying groups and professional associations. Canberra has many fine eateries, but beware - many will be closed on Sundays. All public buildings in Canberra are smoke free.

Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve, Canberra, Australia
