Elizabeth - From The Prison To The Palace - Part 1 of 4 (British History Documentary) | Timeline
Check out our new website for more incredible history documentaries: HD and ad-free.
The first part focuses on Elizabeth’s early life - before her coronation she was disinherited, sexually abused and imprisoned, while Henry VIII had her mother executed. The sexual abuse coupled with the uprising by the Protestant Wyatt against Queen Mary, which led to Elizabeth’s imprisonment in the Tower of London, may have resulted in the Queen’s deep mistrust of men.
Elizabeth, the virgin Queen, the most powerful woman in English history. She emerged as a young princess against a backdrop of civil unrest, political intrigue, executions and coups. She ruled for 45 years and presided over a new kind of state. Her reign saw England emerge from the threat of European annexation to burst forth in a unique flowering of culture and became the world’s leading sea power. In this four part series David Starkey charts the rise and fall of her reign and reveals the powerful resonance it has for the present. This series covers one of the most glamorous and exciting reigns in English history, with bloodthirsty tales of sex, lust, murder and mayhem.

Places to see in ( Brancaster - UK )
Brancaster is a village and civil parish on the north coast of the English county of Norfolk. The civil parish of Brancaster comprises Brancaster itself, together with Brancaster Staithe and Burnham Deepdale. The three villages form a more or less continuous settlement along the A149 at the edge of the Brancaster Manor marshland and the Scolt Head Island National Nature Reserve. The villages are located about 3 miles (5 km) west of Burnham Market, 22 miles (35 km) north of the town of King's Lynn and 31 miles (50 km) north-west of the city of Norwich.
The civil parish has an area of 8.27 square miles (21.43 km2) and in the 2011 census had a population of 797 in 406 households. For the purposes of local government, the parish falls within the district of King's Lynn and West Norfolk. Janet Lake, the clerk to Brancaster Parish Council, has recently reached 50 years of service in the post. St Mary's church at Burnham Deepdale is one of 124 existing round-tower churches in Norfolk; it also has a carved Norman font.
A petrified forest can be seen on the foreshore near Brancaster at low tide. It is about three-quarters of a mile west of the golf clubhouse and consists of material similar to compacted peat or brown coal (lignite). Remains also wash ashore after storms and can be found along the high tide line. The material resembles black rubber but can be broken easily to reveal plant remains inside.
There was a Roman fort and settlement here named Branodunum to the east of the modern village. The Saxon Shore fort (and the related civilian settlement, much of which was destroyed during the construction of a locally opposed housing development in the 1970s) is visible only as grass-covered mounds and remains mainly unexcavated.
The wreck that can be seen off the harbour is the 1021grt coaster SS Vina which was used for target practice by the RAF before accidentally sinking in 1944. The Vina was built at Leith by Ramage & Ferguson in 1894 and was registered at Grangemouth. She was a coast-hugging general cargo ship which would have worked the crossings between the east coast of England and through to the Baltic states.

Hoo Island Part I - Abandoned Victorian military fort
Island Adventure - Part One.
Join me as I kayak over to a small island in the River Medway, Kent - to explore an abandoned Victorian fort and its surrounds.
Hoo Fort and Darnet fort were built in the 19th century. Hoo Fort was completed in approximately 1871. These twin forts were to be placed on either side of the main Medway channel, the idea being to control the channel with a boom between the two islands, whist defending the approaches by means of two powerful batteries of guns. They were built to play a role in defending the UK in the mid 19th century.
Hoo fort was equipped with eleven 9 inch rifled-muzzle loading (R.M.L) guns.
The fort was disarmed and abandoned before the first world war. During the 2nd world war it was used as an observation point.

We had a great day searching for history on the island. This is part one.
As always, if you can identify any of the finds then please let me know.

Lake Renegade in FS9 and FSX
John L. Woodwards's fantastic model. Short clips of it in both 9 and X sim. Ok, so it needs minus pitch trim at cruise and positive pitch trim to land but it's otherwise a fine handling plane, so the trade-off is not so bad IMHO. Sound is by Aaron Swindle, with mods by John, and is perfect to the Renegade. Too much to like. My 'New & Improved' FDE's for it are at FlightSim dot Com. Key in 'Backus' in search to get both FS9 and FSX files (complete aircraft).

And Then There Were None
And Then There Were None is a mystery novel by Agatha Christie, widely considered her masterpiece and described by her as the most difficult of her books to have written. It was first published in the United Kingdom by the Collins Crime Club on 6 November 1939 as Ten Little Niggers, after the British blackface song which serves as a major plot point. The title was changed to the last line of the rhyme – And Then There Were None – for the first American edition, which used the original American version of the song. That song title, Ten Little Indians, was used for some editions, until the Christie estate formally approved the US title of the work.
In the novel, ten people are enticed into coming to an island under different pretexts, i.e. offers of employment or to enjoy a late summer holiday, or to meet with old friends. All have been complicit in the death(s) of other human beings but either escaped justice or committed an act that was not subject to legal sanction. The guests are charged with their respective crimes by a gramophone recording after dinner the first night and informed that they have been brought to the island to pay for their actions. They are the only people on the island, and cannot escape due to the distance from the mainland and the inclement weather, yet gradually all ten are killed in turn, in a manner that seems to parallel the ten deaths in the nursery rhyme. Nobody else seems to be left alive on the island by the apparently last death. A confession in the form of a postscript to the novel, unveils how the killings took place and who was responsible.

New York Times Magazine Climate Change Issue - Panel Discussion
On August 5, 2018, the New York Times Magazine published a special issue devoted entirely to global warming. Writer Nathaniel Rich investigates what we understood about climate change in the 1980s, how close we came to taking national action, and why that effort failed, with enormous consequences since. The magazine also includes an aerial photo and video essay on climate-change impacts across the globe by photographer George Steinmetz. The project was made possible with the support of the Pulitzer Center.
Please join us on Monday, September 10 at 5:30 p.m. for presentations by Nathaniel and George followed by a panel discussion with the Pulitzer Center’s Executive Director, Jon Sawyer, and moderated by Dr. Anthony Leiserowitz, Director of the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication.
June 26, 2018: Integrated Decision-Making in the EEZ
Speaker: Dr. Deirdre Bryne, Oceans and Coasts, Department of Environmental Affairs, Republic of South Africa
Topic: Integrated Decision-Making in the EEZ: South Africa's National Oceans and Coasts Information Management System
Abstract: Integrated decision-making tools are the new kid on the block when it comes to providing information to support marine and maritime activities in an intelligent, environmentally sustainable, and economically efficient manner. We present an overview of South Africa's developing marine and coastal decision-making support system: the national Oceans and Coastal Information Management System, or national OCIMS. What is it designed to do? What won't it do? What is under the hood? How will it support the implementation of existing legislation, and ease the drafting and implementation of new laws? What challenges does South Africa face in the development of this product, and what is the way forward?
Lake Amphibian abandoned
This Lake Buccaneer LA-4-200 amphibian has been sitting at Elstree Aerodrome outside of London for almost 10 years now, abandoned. She's got canadian registration C-FQIP, but nobody really knows who owns her. I tried to inquire and see if I could save her, but the airport manager told me that her tie down fees are paid regularly and that the owner doesn't want to sell. So there she sits. A couple more years and she won't be able to be saved at all. Sad story.
Girls und Panzer - January 26, 1943 - The Battle of Nikolayevka
Today, it's the adniversary of the Battle of Nikolayevka
In 1941, 300.000 Italian soldiers was sent in Russia to support the german invasion. In 1943, they returned barely in 100.000
Among them, the Alpini payed the higer price, with 2 divisions (Cuneense and Julia) completly annihilated to cover the retreat, an exhausting march along the steppe; the third one, the Tridentina, gained respect from allies and enemies breaking the russian line in Nikolayevka, and saving in this way countless german, hungarian and italian lifes.
To eternal memory of all those young italians never returned from russian hell.
