Old tiger saved from Gaza arrives in South Africa
(30 Aug 2016) LEAD IN:
A tiger saved from starvation in Gaza Zoo has moved into his new home at a cat sanctuary in South Africa.
The tiger called Laziz survived three wars in Gaza, including one in 2014 when the zoo was cut off for over a fortnight during Israeli bombing raids.
STORY-LINE:
This is Laziz, a nine year old Bengal tiger taking in the sights and sounds of his new home.
His name means sweet or tasty, but perhaps he should be called 'lucky'.
The charity Four Paws rescued him along with a number of other animals at the derelict Khan Younis Zoo in Gaza.
Laziz arrived here at Johannesburg's international airport after four days in a crate being transported out of Gaza to South Africa.
Ioana Dungler the charity's director of wildlife was in Gaza to supervise the tiger's departure and she's here to ensure he settles happily into his new home which is Lionsrock, a sanctuary for big cats like Laziz.
Dungler says: Laziz was the last tiger of Gaza, so he was very precious also for the Gaza authorities and communities, so he was kind of a symbol. So it was really urgent to act as fast as possible.
According to Dungler, nine year old Laziz suffered abuse at the hands of caretakers in Gaza and was severely malnourished.
She says: The owners (of Khan Younis Zoo in Gaza) were not able to feed the animals anymore. They literally let them die, so they really died by starvation. Initially there were more than fifty animals and they died, died, died until the last ones, fifteen were left.
Laziz was also traumatised at the zoo, explains Dungler: What they did was they were using other metal sticks to to scare him with the metal bars…so he is terrified about everything that is metal and that is loud and so…all the last days for him of course were not very comfortable, but at least he was let in peace. Nobody was shouting at him, nobody was throwing things to him. I mean the kids are having fun throwing stones at the animals.
Although he's a Bengal tiger, it is fitting that Laziz should be here in South Africa.
Next month (September 24) the country will host the annual conference of CITES - the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
Tigers are one of the endangered species that will be discussed at the conference.
Before Laziz is taken to the sanctuary, he's checked by veterinarians to check he has the correct paperwork.
Because tigers are on the endangered list, their transportation is restricted and the vets needed to ensure his importation to South Africa wasn't contravening the CITES convention.
The veterinarian at Lionsrock is Marina Strydom.
She's pleased with Laziz's state of health.
Strydom says His condition is good, he has got a little scratch besides his one eye, but that is just due to the crate. He is very calm, he has been in the crate since Monday so it is long trip for him this far.
It will take some time for Laziz to feel at home here.
He is afraid of metal sounds and has had to stay in his metal cage during transportation.
Dungler explains this is a result of his experience at the zoo.
She says: What they did, was they were using other metal sticks to scare him with the metal bars, so he is terrified about everything that is metal and that is loud and so, all the last days for him of course were not very comfortable, but at least he was left in peace. Nobody was shouting at him, nobody was throwing things to him. I mean the kids are having fun throwing stones at the animals.
Lionsrock is near Bethlehem in the Free State Province, which is about 300 kilometres west of Johannesburg.
Laziz's took a while before venturing out into his new world which is several hectares in size with tree trunks, rocks and makeshift structures for him to climb.

Rescued lion, Black, considers a meal—then leaves to find his brother, Jora.
Bulgaria’s last two circus lions, seven-year-old brothers Jora and Black, have finally been rescued!
Taken in as small cubs, Jora and Black were originally part of a circus act touring Eastern Europe and Turkey. Following the Bulgarian government's ban on the use of wild animals in circuses, the lions were unfortunately left to languish in a cramped metal beast wagon near Sofia, Bulgaria in the summer of 2014—until their owners agreed to re-home them with Born Free.
In July 2015, Born Free and international animal welfare organization FOUR PAWS rescued Jora and Black. Then, in September 2015, the lions were flown to the UK, then on to their new home at the Born Free Jean Byrd Education and Rescue Centre at the award-winning Shamwari Game Reserve in South Africa. Jora and Black now enjoy a spacious, safe, and enriching natural accommodation.
Please consider making a donation to help us with the continuing needs of these deserving lions!

#7 Denali National Park, Alaska
Encompassing some six million acres (25,400 sq km), this park is larger than the state of New Hampshire. So there’s no disputing its epic proportions. The park’s namesake is the highest mountain peak in North America, rising more than 20,300 feet (6,190 m). In addition to mountain ranges, the geography features include forests, glaciers, and tundra. The main attraction for wildlife lovers tends to be the park’s Big Five: Grizzly bears, moose, wolves, Dall sheep, and caribou (also known as reindeer). Other wild animals include red foxes, hawks, and golden eagles.
#6 Jim Corbett National Park, India
This is the oldest national park in the country, and it’s named in honor of a renowned naturalist and hunter. If you’re into birding you should know that nearly 600 resident and migratory species have been documented here, including the crested serpent eagle and the blossom-headed parakeet. A thick jungle and flowing river provide plenty of prey for the Bengal tigers that roam here. Leopards can be spotted, along with smaller felids like fishing cats. Larger mammals include Himalayan black bears, Sambar deer, and herds of Indian elephants.
#5 Corcovado National Park, Costa Rica
At 164 square miles (424 sq km), this is the largest park in the country. And it’s regarded to rank among the greatest locations of biodiversity on the planet. Whale watchers in particular should like this location. Humpback whales use the coastlines as breeding grounds during winter. Dolphins, manatees, bull sharks, and killer whales are also seasonal residents of the park. Wildlife including tapirs (tay-pers), pumas, sloths, many species of monkeys, and harpy eagles make this habitat their home. Even jaguars are in the vicinity, although the cats tend to be reclusive.
#4 Northern Territory, Australia
While you can see plenty of kangaroos and koalas, this region of Oz will introduce you to water buffalos and Brumbies, which are feral horses that roam free. Top End features floodplains and forests that contain plenty of unique wildlife like monitor lizards and wallaroos. The Mary River area that adjoins Kakadu National Park features flocks of migrating magpie geese and huge numbers of saltwater crocodiles. If those reptiles are too intense, you can always stick with dingoes and Jabiru, also known as large storks.
#3 Yellowstone National Park, US
Opened in 1872, this is the oldest national park in the United States. By many accounts it might be the first national park in the world. Encompassing nearly 3,500 square miles (8,980 sq km), it’s large enough to be located in three states: Wyoming, Idaho (eye-da-hoe), and Montana. It’s famous for geographic features like Old Faithful geyser and Yellowstone Lake, which is located over the largest supervolcano in North America. The vast forests and grasslands are home to nearly 60 mammal species including the largest public herd of American bison in the US. Other large beasts include cougars, black bears, grizzlies, moose, and bighorn sheep. Peregrine falcons and ospreys are among more than 300 species of birds that have been reported in the area. With its canyons, rivers, and mountains, many visitors claim that Yellowstone is the best US park for wildlife watching.
#2 Serengeti National Park, Africa (ser-en-GET-tee)
This large game reserve is the oldest national park in Tanzania (tan-zan-nee-yuh) and is a major tourist draw. Sprawling over 5,700 square miles (14,750 sq km), it contains the Big Five of African game: Lions, Cape buffalo, leopards, black rhinos and the Bush elephant. The Serengeti is thought to have Africa’s largest lion population with about 3,000 individuals. Other high profile animals include aardvarks, honey badgers, pangolins, spotted hyenas, flamingos, and marabou (mare-uh-boe) storks. Great numbers of zebra, gazelles, and hippos are also present. But the most numerous inhabitants are the wildebeest with more than 2 million individuals. Every year these critters participate in an epic annual migration known as the Greatest Show on Earth. It usually starts in November as more than one million wildebeest head north in search of better grazing land and water. Along the way, they’re joined by hundreds of thousands of other animals including zebra and gazelles. By the following October, the wildebeest have returned south. Also known as the Great Migration, it’s regarded as one of the most extraordinary natural events in the world.

Tigers Kill One Tourist, Injure Another at Beijing Wildlife Park
A female tourist has been killed and another female injured after they were mauled by tigers while on a safari tour at Badaling Wildlife Park in Beijing on Saturday afternoon.
Surveillance video shot at around 15:00 shows a women getting out of a white sedan after it stops in the tiger enclosure.
As she walks to the driver's side door and opens it, a tiger suddenly attacks her from behind and drags her off.
The male driver of the sedan immediately chases after them and then a female passenger also exits the vehicle to join the rescue attempt.
Meanwhile, a jeep belonging to the park speeds towards the woman to try to save her.
Unfortunately, the second woman was killed by another tiger.
The zoo has now closed to the public as investigations continue.
Badaling Wildlife World, located at the foot of the Badaling section of the Great Wall, is one of the largest zoos of its kind in China.
The park is well-known for rearing large groups of dangerous predatory animals that roam wide open areas through which tourists can drive their own cars on safari-style tours.
According to the rules of the zoo, all tourists must keep their car doors locked and windows fully closed while in the park.
