Gravesend To Tilbury Ferry
The Gravesend to Tilbury Ferry is an initiative promoted by Kent County Council (KCC) and Thurrock Unitary Council (TUC). The Gravesend to Tilbury ferry service has a history dating back to the 13th century and today the service operates as a passenger ferry service meeting a number of essential and recreational needs with over 80,000 passenger journeys recorded annually. The service is operated with subsidy from Kent and Thurrock Councils with KCC acting as the lead authority and holder of the operator contract.
The construction of a new pontoon off the Town Pier at Gravesend which is owned and maintained by Gravesham Council has presented an opportunity to tender openly for this passenger ferry service.
Duchess M Info:
Duchess M of the Lower Thames & Medway Passenger Boat Co, who also operate the Princess Pocahontas on excursions and charters. Duchess M is used on the Tilbury-Gravesend ferry.
Duchess M was built as the Vesta in 1956, one of the last three traditional Portsmouth-Gosport ferries (the others were the Ferry Queen (1959) and Vita (1960)). They were all diesel-powered, but otherwise the design had changed little in 80 years. All three remain in service on the Thames, Vesta as the Duchess M on the Tilbury-Gravesend ferry, and Vita & Ferry Queen with City Cruises. Their lives on the Portsmouth-Gosport ferry were fairly short, being replaced by the Gosport Queen and Portsmouth Queen in 1966. The three vessels were retained until the mid-1970s as reserve vessels and for use on seasonal harbour tours.
Vesta was sold to Thames Pleasure Craft in 1974, but was running for Thames Launches by 1977. She passed to Arthur Green as the Duchess M in 1978, and then to D.C & W.Tours in 1981. By 1983 Duchess M was under under the Capital Cruises banner. In 1991 she was on the River Tyne running charter cruises for Rolls Royce Limousine Hire, passing to River Tyne Cruises by 1995, when her fleet mates were the Catherine (ex-Tilbury-Gravesend) and Island Scene (ex-Blue Funnel). In 1997 Duchess M was back on the Thames at Southend, running services to Queenborough and Strood, plus local sea cruises. Her running mate was the Maid of the Forth. By 1999, Duchess M was the sole fleet member, and she was sold in 2002 to the Lower Thames & Medway Passenger Boat Co for use on the Tilbury-Gravesend ferry, where she remains in 2016.

Gravesend is an ancient town in northwest Kent, England, situated 21 miles east-southeast of Charing Cross on the south bank of the Thames Estuary and opposite Tilbury in Essex.Located in the diocese of Rochester, Gravesend is the administrative centre of the Borough of Gravesham.
Its geographical situation has given Gravesend strategic importance throughout the maritime and communications history of South East England. A Thames Gateway commuter town, Gravesend retains strong links with the River Thames, not least through the Port of London Authority Pilot Station and has witnessed rejuvenation since the advent of High Speed 1 rail services via Gravesend railway station.
The location of Gravesend is at a point where the higher land – the lowest point of the dip slope of the North Downs – reaches the river bank. From its origins as a landing place and shipping port, Gravesend gradually extended southwards and eastwards. Gravesend today is a commercial and commuter town, providing a local shopping district: there are several of the multiple stores, and a good range of local shops. It has a market hall, open six days a week, and a recently established farmers' market. Crew for Thames tugboats live in town, with Gravesend watermen often hailing from a family tradition.
Gravesend Town Pier is a unique structure having the first known iron cylinders used in its construction. Gravesend Town Pier was completely refurbished in 2004 and now features a bar and restaurant. Royal Terrace Pier built in 1844 and originally named Terrace Pier, the prefix Royal was added in honour of Princess Alexandra of Denmark, who arrived at the Gravesend on her way to marry Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) in 1865.
Situated at the top of Harmer Street, Gravesend Clock Tower, Harmer Street foundation stone was laid on 6 September 1887. An American sculptor, William Ordway Partridge, created a life-size statue of the 17th-century Native American princess Pocahontas.
Windmill Hill, named after its former windmills, offers extensive views across the Thames and was a popular spot for Victorian visitors to the town because of the camera obscura installed at the Old Mill and for its tea gardens and other amusements.
The A2 road passes two miles (3 km) south of Gravesend town centre. Gravesend railway station lies on the North Kent Line, and was opened in 1849. The Gravesend West Line, terminating by the river and for some time operating as a continental ferry connection, closed in 1968. Gravesend is the primary north Kent interchange for high speed and metro rail services. Gravesend is served by several Arriva Kent Thameside bus services connecting the town with other areas in Kent including Dartford, Bluewater and Sevenoaks and to the Medway Towns. Passenger ferry services to Tilbury, Essex, operate daily (except Sundays), from Gravesend Town Pier.

National Sea Training College at Gravesend Kent Uk
Passing the Former NSTC by ship outward from London . This college was used in the 1960s 1970s 1980s and 1990s to train young men and women for service in the British Merchant Navy . Most were aged 16 or 17 and after 14 weeks intensive training including firefighting and lifeboat handling they graduated and were sent to join their first ships as deck boys, galley boys or deck trainees . Now with the demise of the British Merchant Fleet and the increased use of cheaper crews from overseas the college was handed over to the Met Police as a Security Training Centre.
