Exploring the Oregon Coast Ruff Road Review
We stayed at Camper Cove in Beaver, Oregon for one week and enjoyed exploring the north Oregon Coast. Our excursion list includes the Three Capes Scenic Route, stops along the way, and a Route 101 drive up the coast to Fort Stevens State Park on the northern tip of Oregon.
The Three Capes Scenic Route is less traveled than the many congested sites we have visited along the 101 coast while staying at Beverly Beach State Park. Now, I will say it was summer so crowds and the coast just go together, but we did find some peaceful places along the scenic route. As a bonus, we saw less traffic than we saw on 101. Three Capes Scenic Route is made up of three capes: Cape Meares, Cape Lookout, and Cape Kiwanda. The route is not well marked and our Verizon service was spotty along the way so we just winged it and found our way fine.
We began the tour on Oregon 131 heading west from Tillamook. You will need to turn around and backtrack after you visit Cape Meares and the Octopus Tree. The drive is hilly with green mountains and views of the ocean now and then. We stopped off at Sitka Sedge State Natural Area for a very peaceful and crowdfree walk along the dike, in the woods, and through the sandy dunes. We checked out Sandbeach Campground and the nearby dunes where the place was packed with ATVs. I don't know if it was a typical day there or an event, but the parking lot and the campground was full. We skipped Cape Lookout. The parking lot was almost full and they require a fee to enter. Most state parks that we've encountered along the coast are free to visit. We decided to skip this one and continue on. There are some beautiful wooded hiking trails near there just off the road and while I didn't get to hike this trip, it's on the list for the next trip. We ended our tour at Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area in Pacific City. This beach has it all! It has a giant haystack rock, a massive sand dune that you can walk up and high bluffs that provide breathtaking ocean views. There are even some tide pools that are fun to play around and look for sea creatures at low tide. The beach went on for miles with the green mountains jutting up in the far distance. We took a couple days to explore this 40 mile route and that included beach time and some walking along the way.
We love the dog friendly Oregon coast! Our dogs got to tag along with us to Cape Kiwanda beach, the Fort Stevens beach, Beverly Beach, and our family beach day in Lincoln City. Thank you, Oregon!
We weren't far from Tillamook and drove through it on 101 as we toured north. Tillamook is home to the Tillamook Creamery. They provide tours there and all kinds of dairy products for purchase. If you haven't ever done the tour, it's worth the visit. Be prepared though. This place gets packed like Disney World. It's a popular destination. A few miles up the road, you can buy yummy Tillamook jerky from the Tillamook Country Smoker. It is THE BEST jerky!
Finally, we made it to the tip of Oregon at Fort Stevens State Park. This large park has a beautiful beach that goes on for miles, an old shipwreck, a large campground, biking trails, and a historic fort! This one is on the list for our next Oregon trip.
It was a sad day when we had to pack up and head inland to our next campground. But we'll be back! I would like to spend one month on the Oregon coast. That's my goal for next time.

We have uploaded several Oregon videos: Crater Lake, Devils Punchbowl, Collier Memorial Campground, Beverly Beach State Park and there will be a couple more Oregon videos coming soon.
How did we end up exploring all of these places? Well, we retired, bought an RV, sold/ donated our stuff and hit the road with our two pups, Terra and Luna. So now we are exploring this country and sharing what we learn along the way.

The Promise of Oregon: Tillamook Natural Resources Program
Blue Chalk worked with The Oregon School Boards Association (OSBA) to tell the story of Tillamook School District’s successful efforts to create a natural resources program for its students.
Tillamook County’s economy has always been rooted in its natural resources so it was only natural for its school district to develop an educational program to provide students with the opportunity to understand the nature that surrounds them. The program's mission is to create students whose understanding of environmental science can help them become responsible and global-minded citizens.
Blue Chalk spent time with many of the students involved in this program and had the chance to partake in some great activities in Oregon’s beautiful forests, wetlands and rivers.
This is the third of a series of films created for OSBA's The Promise of Oregon 2016 campaign. These videos are designed to encourage schools and the public to “dream bigger” about what is possible for Oregon’s schools.

Ridding Oregon Beaches of Cigarette Butts Poses a Challenge | Smokefree Oregon
Gus Gates believes in keeping Oregon's many beautiful beaches clean and free of pollution. As a policy manager of the Surf Rider Foundation, an organization dedicated to preserving beaches all over the world, Gus knows the dangers that litter can pose to local wildlife. This is especially true of cigarette butts, which can harm a variety of creatures if ingested.
Unfortunately, Gus and others dedicated to keeping Oregon beaches clean have their work cut out for them. Cigarette butts are the single most littered item on the state's numerous beaches. Left-behind filters are full of toxic chemicals, and these chemicals can then be passed from animals after consumption. They also pose a risk to waterways, as well as creating an unsightly mess if left unchecked.
Preserving the environment is essential for leaving future generations a beautiful world. For more information on ridding Oregon's beaches of butts, as well as tools to help you quit smoking, please visit
