Grant's Getaways: Tillamook Forest Center
One of the great pleasures about travel across Oregon is that there is an endless supply of fascinating stories waiting to be told.
One of the most intriguing and exciting story was born in the forest just off Portland's front step -- the Tillamook State Forest. That's where four successive and devastating fires -- collectively called the Tillamook Burn -- destroyed over 400,000 acres of ancient forest in the last century. You can see and hear and get a real hands-on flavor for that story at a place you may have missed along State Highway 6, the Tillamook Forest Center.

The Tillamook Forest Center
Located in the heart of the Tillamook State Forest on Highway 6 about one hour west of Portland, the Tillamook Forest Center offers educational and interpretive programs, hands-on exhibits and field tours. It's fun, fully accessible and free. Field programs examine the natural and cultural history and stewardship of the Tillamook State Forest. High school students can explore career options in forestry, including school-to-work experiences with Department of Forestry staff. All programs include pre- and post-activity suggestions and are correlated to state education requirements. The center is open March through November. A limited number of in-class programs are available from mid-January to mid-February when the center is closed.
Hiking for Foliage & History in the Tillamook State Forest
When summer's glorious colors have faded and an amber glow wraps around the land, I am especially fond of the trips that breeze along some of Oregon's finer roadways on a crisp October afternoon.
When it comes to fall colors in the Oregon Coast Range Mountains, try two unique and easy to find trails: the Four County Point and Steam Donkey Trails in the Tillamook State Forest. And of course, a trip here isn't complete without a stop at the Tillamook Forest Center.

Legacy of Fire: The Story of the Tillamook Burn
Experience the power of a fast-moving wildfire as you witness the story of the Tillamook Burn, told by the men and women who knew this forest when it was devastated by fire in the 1930s and 1940s.
While some called it impossible to restore the blackened landscape, hard work and determination laid the groundwork for the creation of today's Tillamook State Forest. Hear from those who planted seedlings as children, and today stand in awe of the tall trees that surround them.
Legacy of Fire is a dramatic re-telling of one of Oregon's worst natural disasters, and of the remarkable forest that grew from its ashes.

Tillamook Air Museum - Tillamook Oregon
I got the opportunity to visit the Tillamook Air Museum in Tillamook Oregon. This was a pretty interesting place to visit, the building was huge and very cold. I had expected to see more planes for how large the building was, but they didnt have tones of planes. They also had a lot of other items outside of planes. Should have been more a military museum or something.
