History Repeating: A Conversation with Artist Ori Gersht and Curator Al Miner
Co-presented by Artist & the Jewish Museum
Part of the event series Dialogue and Discourse
Thursday, September 6, 2012 -- 6:30pm
The Jewish Museum
1109 Fifth Avenue at 92nd Street
New York, NY 10128
On the occasion of his first major survey exhibition, Ori Gersht: History Repeating at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (August 28 - January 6), Gersht and exhibition curator Al Miner will discuss Gersht's evolving body of work and the diverse threads of history woven throughout his oeuvre. With a special introduction by Norman Kleeblatt, Chief Curator of the Jewish Museum.
In evocative and innovative films and photographs, Ori Gersht weds the past and the present. With the latest technology he takes a discerning look at multiple histories and the ways they are communicated: histories that have shaped his own identity and helped define the state of contemporary society. Gersht's images, with sources ranging from 19th century still life painting to the Holocaust, reveal the links between history and memory, creation and destruction, and beauty and violence while exploring the passage of time.

CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Lex (Ariana Richards) and Tim (Joseph Mazzello) outwit the raptors that are hunting them and safely escape from the kitchen.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Steven Spielberg's phenomenally successful sci-fi adventure thriller is graced by state-of-the-art special effects from the team of Stan Winston, Phil Tippett and Michael Lantieri from George Lucas's Industrial Light & Magic. The film follows two dinosaur experts -- Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and Dr. Ellie Sattler Laura Dern) -- as they are invited by eccentric millionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) to preview his new amusement park on an island off Costa Rica. By cloning DNA harvested from pre-historic insects, Hammond has been able to create living dinosaurs for his new Jurassic Park, an immense animal preserve housing real brachiosaurs, dilophosaurs, triceratops, velociraptors, and a Tyrannosaur Rex. Accompanied by cynical scientist Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), who is obsessed with chaos theory, and Hammond's two grandchildren (Ariana Richards and Joseph Mazzello), they are sent on a tour through Hammond's new resort in computer controlled touring cars. But as a tropical storm hits the island, knocking out the power supply, and an unscrupulous employee (Wayne Knight) sabotages the system so that he can smuggle dinosaur embryos out of the park, the dinosaurs start to rage out of control. Grant then has to bring Hammond's grandchildren back to safety as the group is pursued by the gigantic man-eating beasts.

SUMMARY
=======
The Canadian National Vimy Memorial is a war memorial site in France dedicated to the memory of Canadian Expeditionary Force members killed during the First World War. It also serves as the place of commemoration for Canadian soldiers of the First World War killed or presumed dead in France who have no known grave. The monument is the centrepiece of a 100-hectare (250-acre) preserved battlefield park that encompasses a portion of the ground over which the Canadian Corps made their assault during the initial Battle of Vimy Ridge offensive of the Battle of Arras.
The Battle of Vimy Ridge was the first time all four divisions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force participated in a battle as a cohesive formation, and it became a Canadian national symbol of achievement and sacrifice. France ceded to Canada perpetual use of a portion of land on Vimy Ridge on the understanding that Canada use the land to establish a battlefield park and memorial. Wartime tunnels, trenches, craters, and unexploded munitions still honeycomb the grounds of the site, which remains largely closed off for reasons of public safety. Along with preserved trench lines, several other memorials and cemeteries are contained within the park.
The project took designer Walter Seymour Allward eleven years to build. King Edward VIII unveiled it on 26 July 1936 in the presence of French President Albert Lebrun and a crowd of over 50,000 people, including 6,200 attendees from Canada. Following an extensive multi-year restoration, Queen Elizabeth II re-dedicated the monument on 9 April 2007 at a ceremony commemorating the 90th anniversary of the battle. The site is maintained by Veterans Affairs Canada. The Vimy Memorial is one of only two National Historic Sites of Canada located outside the country, the other being the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial.

Space Tug by Murray Leinster (1896 - 1975)
Joe Kenmore heard the airlock close with a sickening wheeze and then a clank. In desperation he turned toward Haney. My God, we've been locked out!
Through the transparent domes of their space helmets, Joe could see a look of horror and disbelief pass across Haney's face. But it was true! Joe and his crew were locked out of the Space Platform.
Four thousand miles below circled the Earth. Under Joe's feet rested the solid steel hull of his home in outer space. But without tools there was no hope of getting back inside. Joe looked at his oxygen meter. It registered thirty minutes to live. (Summary from Gutenberg text)

How to Fillet a Smallmouth Bass with No Bones - Smallmouth Bass Cleaning
Hello folks, this week we show you how to quickly and easily fillet a smallmouth bass into boneless fillets.
Click here to subscribe for more fishing videos:
This method will work for any type of bass, whether it be small mouth, large mouth, striped, or sea bass.
I will also show you some tips on how to make your fillet taste better.
To start, make an incision behind the neck on a slight angle towards the head of the fish. Flip the fish and do the same thing on the other side. Then run your knife along the inside of the top fin, all the way to the back of the fish. Then turn the fish and do the same thing on the other side.
A Bass has one bone right up the middle and a rib cage. So you can take your knife and just run it along the top bone where you made your cut and around the rib cage. Once you get around the rib cage, just poke the knife through so it sticks out the bottom of the fish and bring it right along to the back of the tail until that side of your fillet is loose.
Do not remove the fillet!
It will helps balance out your fish and allows you to remove the other fillet much more easily. If you take the fillet off you'll find that, while removing the second fillet, you'll end up cutting into the ribs instead of along them.
So leave the fillet, flip the fish, and cut around the ribs, poke the knife through and bring it right along to the back of the tail until that side of your fillet is loose.
Now you can remove your fillets. Spin the fish and starting at your very first incision, move your knife around the ribcage and then down the side of your ribcage to completely remove the fillet. Repeat this step on the other side. This way there should be no bones in your meat.
So now that you have your fillets, typically you would run your knife along between the skin and the fillet to remove the skin. However for this one I'm going to stay off the skin about 1/16th of an inch, leaving a little bit of meat on the skin. This meat is the dark muscle meat of the fish and it doesn't taste very good.
You can see that I've only left one little strip of dark muscle meat and all the rest has been removed. You should remove that dark muscle meat from any fish that you clean, especially blue fish, as the fillet will taste much better without it.
If you end up with a fillet that has a lot of blood in it, make sure you wash it very very well and remove as much blood as you can; it will taste ten times better.
One last thing to do is to remove some of the fat. It's the little bits of white, discoloured meat on the edges of your fillet. You'll find it along the belly and along the top and you can just cut that off.
Fish it very healthy and they do recommend eating it once or twice a week. Bon appetit!

Fred Watson on Public Engagement through Tourism
(a regular AAO Science Colloquium:
In the quest to find new and effective ways of communicating science, tourism has emerged as a promising vehicle for outreach. Over the past eight years, I've been involved with the tourism sector, providing the science-related input to tour design, and helping to lead tours in Australia and overseas. This has resulted in close contact with over 500 individuals who might not otherwise engage with the science sector.
These clients come from wide-ranging backgrounds, with ages from 24 to 89, but peaking in the baby-boomer age-group. An unexpected consequence of the tours is close contact with influential people - one recent Arctic tour included three university vice-chancellors, while several senior judges have also participated. The success of the venture is borne out by the repeat participation rate, which currently stands at 65 percent.
In this talk, I will briefly describe the process of tour design and participation, outline some future opportunities, and present highlights of recent tours. These include visits to Spaceport America, the Large Hadron Collider, and some of the world's most unusual telescopes - as well as highlights of Aurora Borealis and solar eclipse expeditions. There will be plenty of slides...

SUMMARY
=======
Oklahoma City (), often shortened to OKC, is the capital and largest city of the U.S. state of Oklahoma. The county seat of Oklahoma County, the city ranks 27th among United States cities in population. The population grew following the 2010 Census, with the population estimated to have increased to 643,648 as of July 2017. As of 2015, the Oklahoma City metropolitan area had a population of 1,358,452, and the Oklahoma City-Shawnee Combined Statistical Area had a population of 1,459,758 residents, making it Oklahoma's largest metropolitan area.
Oklahoma City's city limits extend into Canadian, Cleveland, and Pottawatomie counties, though much of those areas outside the core Oklahoma County area are suburban or rural (watershed). The city ranks as the ninth-largest city in the United States by total area (including consolidated city-counties; it is the second largest city in the United States by total area, after Houston, whose government is similarly not consolidated with that of a county or borough).
Lying in the Great Plains region, Oklahoma City has one of the world's largest livestock markets. Oil, natural gas, petroleum products and related industries are the largest sector of the local economy. The city is in the middle of an active oil field and oil derricks dot the capitol grounds. Oklahoma City is on the I-35 Corridor, which is one of the primary travel corridors south into neighboring Texas and Mexico and north towards Wichita and Kansas City. Located in the state's Frontier Country region, the city's northeast section lies in an ecological region known as the Cross Timbers. The city was founded during the Land Run of 1889, and grew to a population of over 10,000 within hours of its founding. The city was the scene of the April 19, 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, in which 168 people died. It was the deadliest terror attack in the history of the United States until the attacks of September 11, 2001, and remains the deadliest act of domestic terrorism in U.S. history.
Since the time weather records have been kept, Oklahoma City has been struck by thirteen strong tornadoes; eleven of these tornadoes were rated F4 or EF4 on the Fujita and Enhanced Fujita scales, and two were rated F5 or EF5.Since 2008, Oklahoma City has been home to the National Basketball Association (NBA)'s Oklahoma City Thunder, who play their home basketball games at the Chesapeake Energy Arena.
