Coffs is one of the toughest 4WD destinations on the planet. Coming unstuck isn’t a matter of chance, it’s a matter of time - as Shauno found out, big time! Read Graham's full write up here:
Welcome to Commando – one of the most insane, epic 4WD challenges anywhere in the country! Shauno first attempted Commando over five years ago, back when the 60 was a wagon. Now he’s had a second crack at this infamous hill climb, and well…let’s just say, you’ve gotta see it to believe it!

Packed full of the best local advice (including a bulletproof G60 that Graham’s absolutely blown away by) and tough driving tips, if you love laugh-a-minute, high entertainment low-range action, then you’ve come to the right place.

Sydney to Coffs Harbour (Vlog #79)
First 3 days of the 3 months trip that will bring me around the east coast of Australia and then South East Asia and also, first 3 days of the 23 that I will spend driving on the east coast of Australia :)
It has been already amazing, expecially the firsts stop: the Worimi National Park. If you wanna go, the best thing is to drive until the north side of the beach and leave the car in Jesse Street and then just walk until the dunes. They are astonishing and the view from the drone was even better.
After that a stop in Nelson Bay is a must: go check out the Fingal Spit, a line of sand that connects a beach to an island and that is walkable during low tide.
The first night we slept in a road next to the beach (a local suggested us to go there) and I think that as long as you are very clean, it is fine almost everywhere.
The second day, still in Nelson Bay we went to see the Tomaree Heads Lookout and chill on the beautiful Zenith Beach :) then we drove until Crescent Head where we slept in a lovely camp ground: the waves campground (only 10$ per person per night (unpowered).
The third day, from Crescent Head we drove until the Dorringo National Park where we saw the Rain Forest and then we stopped in Woolgolga.
Tomorrow is time to go to the Gold Coast :D Stay tuned!

Coffs Harbour/Orara Goldfields Detecting
Out and about with a Whites TDI and Teknetics T2 looking for gold and relics in the Orara Goldfields. No gold this time but I had the chance to revisit a ridge that I thought had a possibility of gold and have a quick walk around, and down into the creek to show just how tight the gold bearing country is in the Coffs Harbour region.

Serious 4x4 Roll Over & Recovery (Inc Slow Mo Replay) @ Widow Maker Coffs Harbour
Please take care out on the trails guys. Things can turn bad very quickly. We were very lucky no one was hurt in this roll over and everyone made it home safely although the Nissan Patrol didn't but plastic and metal are easily replaced.
Use the time stamps below to navigate the video and be sure to drop us a comment with how you would have handled this climb.
As you all know videos never do the terrain justice and Widow Maker in Coffs Harbour is a prime example. It is very steep and wide so when things go wrong they go seriously wrong. A high consequence hill that's for sure and the Nissan Patrol was fortunate not to keep rolling and stop where it did.
The right side of Widow Maker is very difficult with a large step in the middle of the climb. When climbing this step the front of the 4wd will get very light and things can go wrong very quickly. The left side of Widow Maker is also difficult however the step is a lot smaller yet things can go wrong very quickly too and it has also claimed several 4x4 vehicles.
As you can imagine after this 4x4 fail roll over emotions and adrenaline were very high and that makes it hard to think clearly. After making sure the driver was not injured we checked for fuel leaks, there was none. So as much as we wanted to immediately plan, act and recover the GU Patrol we took a 20min break before even trying to make a recovery plan and let the shock somewhat settle. The recovery took place and as tricky and complicated as it was it went smoothly. 3 winches were used. The 1st winch was an anchor at the front of the vehicle so it wouldn't run away down the hill. The second winch was also an anchor to the side making sure it wouldn't roll over again once it was upright as it was still in a bad position with a big lean. The third winch was used to pull the Patrol into a better position and drag it down the hill.
