Driving through Oranjestad in Aruba
Oranjestad (Dutch, literally Orangetown) is the capital and second largest city of Aruba, which is in the Caribbean north of Venezuela. Oranjestad is located on the southern coast near the western end of the island country. In the local language, Papiamento, Oranjestad is often referred to simply as Playa. The town has ever since been the capital city of the island. The fort is still one of the town's attractions, others being the tax-free harbour and the Willem III Tower, located near the fort. Dutch colonial architecture is less visible than on the neighbouring island of Curaçao, but several modern recreations have emerged, including the outdoor shopping mall at Royal Plaza, and a few scattered buildings along Main Street and on the Main Square. Due to increased government interest in maintaining the island's cultural heritage, a number of old buildings and houses in the center of town have been transformed into colorfully restored landmarks, such as the lime-colored Civil Registry on Wilhelminastraat. Oranjestad is served by the Queen Beatrix International Airport, 2.5 kilometers from the city center. Caya G. F. Betico Croes, also called Main Street, is Aruba's main shopping street in Oranjestad, however in the past few years shoppers have increasingly turned to Lloyd G. Smith Boulevard, the main thoroughfare in the city. This is in part because the boulevard is closer to the cruise ship terminal and harbour area. Oranjestad is home to the Universiteit van Aruba, which offers programs in law and economics, and to the island's largest secondary school (Colegio Arubano), both modeled on the Dutch system. Many students enroll into universities in the Netherlands for graduate and postgraduate degrees.

Oranjestad (Dutch, literally Orangetown) is the capital and largest city of Aruba. Oranjestad is located on the southern coast near the western end of the island country. In the local language, Papiamento, Oranjestad is often referred to simply as Playa.
The town was built around Fort Zoutman shortly after it was built in 1796 . Initially the town had no official name, being known only as the town on the Bay of Horses (Paardenbaai in Dutch), a place from which native-bred[citation needed] horses were raised and exported to neighboring Curaçao. The town has ever since been the capital city of the island.
The city is named after the first King Willem van Oranje-Nassau (William of Orange-Nassau) - the first heir to the Dutch House of Orange. The name was conferred on the city in the 1820s when interest in Aruba increased due to the discovery of (alluvial) gold deposits.
Air Aruba once had its headquarters in Oranjestad. Air Aruba suspended its operations as of October 23, 2000.
Small portions of the city are formed from a series of man-made expansions of land into the sea. Present-day Renaissance Marketplace (formerly Seaport Marketplace), as well as the adjacent Queen Wilhelmina Park, lies within part of this expansion.
There is some Dutch colonial architecture. Due to increased government interest in maintaining the island's cultural heritage, a number of old buildings and houses in the center of town have been transformed into colorfully restored landmarks, such as the lime-colored Civil Registry on Wilhelminastraat.

The MV Celebrity Mercury docked in Oranjestad.
Oranjestad houses the largest port on the island capable of docking up to five large vessels. In 2003, over 200 container ships called at the Oranjestad port. A smaller port for shorter cargo vessels is at Barcadera, 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) to the east. Plans have been proposed to increase loading capacity at Oranjestad, and for the construction of a marina to make up for inadequate docking space available for yachts and fishing boats.
Hospital in Oranjestad.
Traffic in the center of town is a growing issue for island commuters. The government is under pressure[citation needed] to make improvements to the periphery, which runs around the city. In late 2006 planning began for the installment of a roundabout, along the main boulevard and next to the Free Zone, at one of the island's most troublesome intersections. The plans were completed in 2008. In the meantime, several businesses and government departments have relocated their offices outside of the city centre, spurring a boom in construction and modernisation.
Oranjestad is home to the Universiteit van Aruba, which offers programs in law and economics, and to the island's largest secondary school (Colegio Arubano), both modeled on the Dutch system. Many students enroll into universities in the Netherlands for graduate and postgraduate degrees.
Oranjestad is also the location of Xavier University School of Medicine, Aruba, a U.S. based curriculum medical school. The school offers a 2-year pre-medicine and 4-year medical program leading to an M.D. degree (Doctor of Medicine). All classes are taught in English.

Off Roadin' in Aruba
I didn't expect Aruba to be so arid, let alone see ginormous cacti. A jeep tour with De Palm Tours gave us a peek at the terrain of the island, a tour of local landmarks, a dip in a natural pool and a bit of a roller coaster ride when some fellow travel bloggers took the wheel.

Jelajah Dunia with Mubarak ( Aruba, Caribian Island )
Aruba ( /əˈruːbə/ ə-roo-bə, Dutch pronunciation: [aˈruba]) is a 33-kilometer-long (20 mi) island of the Lesser Antilles in the southern Caribbean Sea, located 27 km (17 mi) north of the coast of Venezuela and approximately 130 km (81 mi) east of the Guajira Peninsula, Colombia. Together with Bonaire and Curaçao, it forms a group referred to as the ABC islands of the Leeward Antilles, the southern island chain of the Lesser Antilles. Collectively, Aruba and the other Dutch islands in the Antilles are commonly referred to as the Netherlands Antilles or the Dutch Antilles.
Along with the Netherlands, Curaçao and Sint Maarten, Aruba is one of the four constituent countries that form the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The citizens of all share a single nationality: Dutch. Aruba has no administrative subdivisions, but, for census purposes, is divided into eight regions. Its capital is Oranjestad.
Unlike much of the Caribbean region, Aruba has a dry climate and an arid, cactus-strewn landscape. This climate has helped tourism as visitors to the island can reliably expect warm, sunny weather. It has a land area of 179 square kilometres (69.1 sq mi) and is densely populated with a total of 101,484 inhabitants at the 2010 Census. It lies outside the hurricane belt.

Discover Aruba: One Happy Island ????
Aruba, together with neighboring Bonaire and Curaçao, make up the ABC chain of islands in the western-most part of the Leeward Antilles in the Southern Caribbean Sea. All three islands are part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Aruba is a tiny Dutch Caribbean island off the coast of Venezuela with a population of approximately 100,000 and nearly 100 different nationalities happily living together. European influence shows in the architecture that features Dutch gables painted in tropical pastels. It’s also evident in the languages, with English, Dutch and Spanish spoken alongside the local tongue, Papiamento.
Aruba's 70 square miles of happiness is the Caribbean's theme park. You'll enjoy casinos, duty-free shops, more than two dozen dive sites, noteworthy shipwrecks and a championship golf course lined with cacti and populated by friendly iguanas. Saddle up on horseback, take a tour, or hike through Arikok National Park and discover the island's fascinating natural wonders, from rock formations to natural bridges. Shop 'til you drop, enjoy glittering nightlife and fabulous restaurants.
Aruba's trademark divi divi trees always point in a southwesterly direction due to trade winds that blow from the northeast, but the locals like to think the trees are pointing the way to the blond sandy beaches and gentle surf that ring the island in the shape of a cheery smile.
Best of all, there really is no bad time to visit Aruba. Located only 20 miles north of Venezuela, temperatures are consistently pleasant (lows in the 70s, highs in the 80s), there's no rainy season, and its location is far below the Atlantic hurricane belt, so it's less likely to be impacted by storms.
CRUISING AROUND TOWN FROM THE CRUISE PORT
Aruba has been the recipient of Cruisers’ Choice Top-Rated Southern Caribbean Destinations for two years running (2016 and 2017).
Most cruise ships arrive early morning to make most of the day in port. The port of Oranjestad, Aruba's capital city, has a modern Cruise facility with three terminals.
On Aruba, it’s easy to find your happy place! Great shopping, dining and bar-hopping are within walking distance of the dock. Several malls are located right across the street from the terminal, and a stroll along the waterfront is a great way to take in the Dutch colonial architecture and tropical pastels.
Popular beaches are approximately 10 minutes away from the cruise pier by taxi or bus and feature facilities for wet 'n wild adventures including snorkeling, deep sea diving, windsurfing, kitesurfing, parasailing, beach volleyball and banana boat rides. Many of the large resorts are located right on the beach, so gamers can duck into one of the hotel casinos for an added diversion.
A recent addition to downtown Oranjestad is the trolley or streetcar which offer free transportation to and from the main street downtown area.

Puerto Rico, officially the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico aka Associated Free State of Puerto Rico, is a self-governing unincorporated territory of the United States located in the northeastern Caribbean, east of the Dominican Republic and west of the Virgin Islands. Puerto Rico is composed of an archipelago that includes the main island of Puerto Rico and a number of smaller islands and keys, the largest of which are Vieques, Culebra, and Mona. The main island of Puerto Rico is the smallest by land area and second smallest by population among the four Greater Antilles (Cuba, Hispaniola, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico).
Puerto Ricans often call the island Borinquen, from Borikén, its indigenous Taíno name. The terms boricua and borincano derive from Borikén and Borinquen respectively, and are commonly used to identify someone of Puerto Rican heritage. The island is also popularly known as La Isla del Encanto, which translated means The Island of Enchantment.
Aruba is a 33-kilometre (21 mile) long island of the Lesser Antilles in the southern Caribbean Sea, 27 km (17 mile) north of the Paraguaná Peninsula, Falcón State, Venezuela. An autonomous region within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Aruba has no administrative subdivisions.
