Kissimmee-Okeechobee-Everglades water flows -- then and now
Peninsular Florida -- Centeral and Southern Florida -- inland surface waters flowed from Lake Kissimmee down the Kissimmee River through Lake Okeechbee and then the Everlgades into Florida Bay. Canals and levels were built starting in the late 1800s through the 1960s which drastically altered the natural flows and their water cleansing abilities.

How To Survive An Alligator Attack
Alligator attacks don't happen often, but when they do, they can be fatal. According to the Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission, there have been 23 fatal alligator attacks since 1973. So, what should you do if you find yourself face-to-face with one of these apex predators?
We talked to wildlife expert Corbin Maxey, who owns two alligators. Maxey told us that even though alligators can get aggressive, they are likely to leave you alone as long as you don't disturb them. He has some simple instructions for what to do if something goes wrong.

Following is the transcript of the video:
Graham Flanagan: For years, Hollywood movies have shown humans at war with alligators. And their crocodilian cousins. Either they're attacking us, or we're attacking them.
Alligators don't often attack humans. But it does happen, and if one attacks you, what should you do? And perhaps more importantly, what shouldn't you do? American alligators have been around for over 150 million years, since the age of the dinosaurs. But alligators stuck around. There are nearly five million alligators in the United States. They live throughout the southeast, from Texas to North Carolina. But most of them are concentrated here, in Florida. In fact, the sunshine state is home to around 1.3 million alligators, And that's where the majority of alligator attacks take place. The first fatal alligator attack recorded in the United States occurred in 1973 near Sarasota. Since then, 23 more deaths have been reported.
Corbin Maxey: You're more likely to be attacked by a dog, or even killed by a cow than have an encounter, a negative one, with an alligator.
Flanagan: Corbin Maxey is a biologist, wildlife expert, and owner of two alligators.
Maxey: Alligators, they can be dangerous, but just like with wildlife, if you leave them alone, they will more than likely wanna leave you alone.
Flanagan: Sure, alligators can be vicious, technically they're apex predators, albeit very patient ones.
Maxey: They're ambush predators, usually all you'll see, if you're really even lucky to see, 'cause they're so good at camouflage, are the little eyes above the water. They would be eating mammals like raccoons, waterbirds, turtles, and deer on occasion. And they literally will sneak up to their prey and then whack! The prey won't even know usually what gets it, but they are incredibly fast.
Flanagan: Alligators are usually pretty chill, as long as you respect their space.
Maxey: There are rare instances of course, where females might be guarding a nest, and if you're in Florida, or you're in an area where alligators are found, and you come across a nest with a female, she is going to be angry, and she will come after you.
Flanagan: If an alligator charges after you, the first step you should take, is to run. Alligators are quick, and can run up to a speed of 11 miles per hour, but they can't sustain that very long. But what if it's too late? And that gator sinks it's teeth into you? Fight back!
Maxey: You wanna fight back, you wanna give it your all, because that will more than likely allow the alligator to release you, they're gonna realize, oh gosh, I don't wanna deal with this.
Flanagan: Don't try to pry open the jaws. You're dealing with a bite force of three thousand pounds. Some experts say that while fighting back, you should smack the gator's sensitive snout, and also try to gouge the gator's eyes.
Maxey: I feel like that's easier said than done. When you have something sudden happen to you, it's gonna be very hard to be like, oh wait, where are the eyes, you know? So I think the best thing to do would be to fight back, put up a fight, definitely don't play dead. If you play dead, you might become dead.
Flanagan: So, in review, if you're attacked by an alligator, run away. If it's too late, fight back, don't try to pry open it's jaws. Attack the sensitive snout, and gouge the eyes, and definitely do not play dead. But perhaps most important, stay out of their territory.
Maxey: When alligators do attack humans or bite them, it's mainly by mistake, and then usually they'll let go, 'cause they'll realize, ah, this isn't a deer, this isn't a raccoon, this is foreign object, this is not something that I would want to eat.
Flanagan: Lucky us.

Downtown Miami - Florida vacation
Miami is a seaport city at the southeastern corner of the U.S. state of Florida and its Atlantic coast. As the seat of Miami-Dade County, the municipality is the principal, central, and most populous of its metropolitan area and part of the second-most populous metropolis in the southeastern United States. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Miami's metro area is the eighth-most populous and fourth-largest urban area in the U.S., with a population of around 5.5 million
Miami and its suburbs are located on a broad plain between the Florida Everglades to the west and Biscayne Bay to the east, which also extends from Florida Bay north to Lake Okeechobee. The elevation of the area never rises above 40 ft (12 m) and averages at around 6 ft (1.8 m) above mean sea level in most neighborhoods, especially near the coast. The highest undulations are found along the coastal Miami Rock Ridge, whose substrate underlies most of the eastern Miami metropolitan region. The main portion of the city lies on the shores of Biscayne Bay which contains several hundred natural and artificially created barrier islands, the largest of which contains Miami Beachand South Beach. The Gulf Stream, a warm ocean current, runs northward just 15 miles (24 km) off the coast, allowing the city's climate to stay warm and mild all year.
Downtown Miami is the historic heart of Miami, and along with Coconut Grove, is the oldest settled area of Miami, with early pioneer settlement dating to the early 19th century. Urban development began in the 1890s with the construction of the Florida East Coast Railway by Standard Oil industrialist Henry Flagler down to Miami at the insistence of Julia Tuttle. Flagler, along with developers such as William Brickell and George E. Merrick helped bring developer interest to the city with the construction of hotels, resorts, homes, and the extension of Flagler's rail line. Flagler Street, originating in Downtown, is a major east-west road in Miami named after the tycoon; the Julia Tuttle Causeway, crossing Biscayne Bay just north of Downtown in Edgewater, is named in honor of Tuttle.

Man Caught 719 pound Alligator with Crossbow in Florida
Some men might be considered crazy for baiting a 719-pound alligator to come at them, but it's worked out well for Clark Woodsby.
The Lakeland, Florida man is showing off his latest trophy after forcing the gator into submission in a private phosphate pit.
'We called him in with an electronic call,' he said. 'This gator heard it from across the lake, and it came bee-lining right toward me.'
'When it got within about 20 yards, we turned the call off,' he told WTSP. 'I shot it with a crossbow right in the shoulder.'
Woodsby called the gator: 'A monster.'
He was hunting with Winter Haven man Glen Grizzaffe at the time.
Grizzaffe is a licensed trapper and owns an alligator processing plant.
They had been informed by the landowner that a gator had been seen on the property and he wanted them to take care of the nuisance.
Once they shot the gator with the crossbow, the team used a snatch hook and rope to get the gator into a 14-foot long jonboat.
Though the gator will not be a record-beater.
The longest gator on record in Florida is 14 feet, 3 1/2 inches while the heaviest is 1,043 pounds.

Gator Hunters Catch 727-Pound Alligator!
Just three days into the start of Mississippi's alligator hunting season, state Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks officials say the state record for heaviest alligator has been broken -- twice.
MSNewsNow.com reports that a group of hunters from Madison held the weight record for about an hour after taking in a 723.5-pound gator, beating the state record for heaviest male by 26 pounds.
Beth Trammell, a first-time hunter, and her six-person crew spent two hours trying to wrestle the 13-foot 5.5-inch alligator into their boat after receiving help from two other hunters, the Hattiesburg American reported.
The record set by Trammell and her team was broken about an hour later, when Dustin Bockman of Vicksburg took in a 727-pound alligator, according to Mississippi's alligator program coordinator, Ricky Flynt.
Bockman and his two partners bagged the 13-foot 4.5-inch gator after getting close enough to shoot the animal with a crossbow on the Mississippi River, according to the Hattiesburg American.
He broke all the lines we could put in him. Finally put a snare on him and got him up high enough and put a shot on him. All in all probably took us four and a half hours to catch him from the first time we saw him, Bockman told MSNewsNow.com.
After four hours of trying to get the gator into a boat, Bockman, his brother, Ryan Bockman, and friend, Cole Landers, gave up and decided to mount the monster's head on a sandbar.
We pulled his head up on the bank far enough he wouldn't float away, Bockman told the Hattiesburg American. He was so heavy he wasn't going anywhere.
Flynt said the alligator caught by Bockman's team is now the current weight record for an alligator taken in alligator hunting season by a Mississippi hunter.
The current length record for an alligator in Mississippi is 13 feet 6.5 inches. That alligator was taken on the Pascagoula River in 2008.
Brockman's massive catch broke the previous state record. Beth Trammell caught a 723-pounder only an hour before, according to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks.
The epic battle between Brockman and beast took two hours to win. He and his party chased the behemoth by motorboat along the Mississippi River. They were able to get close enough to spear the scaled creature with a crossbow before finally blasting it with a shotgun.
We killed the alligator at 4 a.m., Brockman said. We waited until 6:30 (a.m.) before I called three or four more guys to help us load it into the boat.
The American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis), sometimes referred to colloquially as a gator or common alligator, is a large crocodilian reptile endemic to the southeastern United States. It is one of two living species in the genus Alligator within the family Alligatoridae and larger than the other extant alligator species, the Chinese alligator. Adult male American alligators measure 3.4 m (11 ft) to 4.6 m (15 ft) in length, and can weight 453 kg (1,000 lb). Females are smaller, measuring around 3 m (9.8 ft). The American alligator inhabits freshwater wetlands, such as marshes and cypress swamps from Texas to North Carolina. It is distinguished from the sympathetic American crocodile by its broader snout, with overlapping jaws and darker coloration, and is less tolerant of seawater but more tolerant of cooler climates than the American crocodile which is found only in tropical climates.
Alligators are apex predators and consume fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
The American alligator is a fairly large species of crocodilian, with males reaching an average maximum size of 4.6 m (15 ft) in length, weighing up to 453 kg (1,000 lb), while females grow to a maximum of 3 m (9.8 ft).Occasionally, a large, old male may measure longer. There have been reports during the 19th and 20th centuries of larger males reaching 5 to 6 m (16 to 20 ft).The largest reported size was a male killed in 1890 on Marsh Island, Louisiana and reportedly measured at 5.8 m (19 ft) in length but no voucher specimen was available since the alligator was left on a muddy bank after having been taped due to having been too massive to relocate. If the size of this animal was correct, it would have weighed around 1,000 kg (2,200 lb). The largest alligator shot in Florida was 5.31 m (17.4 ft), as reported by the Everglades National Park. However on average, American alligators do not reach such extreme sizes. In males, size averages at around 3.4 to 4 m (11 to 13 ft) in length, weighing slightly in excess of 227 kg (500 lb), while in smaller females, it averages 2.7 m (8.9 ft), weighing slightly in excess of 91 kg (200 lb).
