A #drive of five scenic portions of California Route 120 in and near #Yosemite National Park, traveling eastbound through the #Sierra Nevada Mountains on a sunny late summer morning. The journey passes by Olmsted Point, Tenaya Lake, Tuolumne Meadows, Lembert Dome, exits through the #TiogaPass park entrance, and continues by Tioga Lake, Ellery Lake, brief glimpses of Mono Lake, and ends in the town of Lee Vining on US 395.

#TiogaRoad is not maintained in the winter, and is usually closed from approximately November until sometime between April and June each year. While it is signed as contiguous California State Route 120 through Yosemite National Park, the portion within park boundaries is federally, not state, maintained. At 9,943 feet (3,031 meters), Tioga Pass is the highest paved through-road in the California State Route System.
Like many mountain roads, there are tree-lined stretches of this road where all you can see is trees whizzing by on both sides... I omitted most sections like that, which is why there are five separate portions instead of one continuous drive. Towards the end I was stuck behind someone in a pickup driving somewhat slowly (and not particularly well).

Tioga Road, Crossing YOSEMITE National Park
Tioga Road (Hwy 120) is one of the most beautiful drives in California. The road crosses Yosemite National Park from East to West.
Along the highway there are many interesting spots to spend a few hours enjoying the mighty landscapes of Yosemite and spotting wildlife. We were lucky to see some coyotes and many other small mammals.
This road crosses a high altitude pass (3031 m) and remains closed for a big portion of the year. Clearing of the Tioga Road normally begins on or about April 15 each year and usually takes between one and two months. Predicting when these roads will open is not possible.
We mounted the gopro in the car and we recorded part of the trip starting from Arch Rock entrance in el Portal road to Lee Vining near Mono Lake. I hope you enjoy.

Yosemite Tioga Pass
In the mood for a daydream? Join us as we explore Tioga Pass at Yosemite. We spent the night at Moraine Campground in Inyo National Park. In the morning we passed through Tuolumne Meadows and walked out on Olmstead Point. In the afternoon we hiked the Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias.
As we left Yosemite, we drove through thick smoke from the Mariposa County fire that ultimately took out over 80,000 acres of forest and dozens of homes and structures.
In the evening, we washed our RV. By this time, we had been on the road since Thursday, July 13th, driving dry and dusty roads through Nevada and Utah. The RV really needed to be cleaned.

Opening Tioga Pass/SR 120 2019
In this Caltrans News Flash, the Lee Vining Maintenance Supervisor Randy Walker explains what it takes to open SR 120/Tioga Pass in the spring. SR 120 west known worldwide as Tioga Pass, is a 13 mile stretch of highway that begins at the junction of US Hwy 395 and travels west to the east entrance gate of Yosemite National Park. As you will see, there is a lot more than just removing the snow to open this highway to the public. Caltrans motto is We will open the pass when it is safe to do so!

Road Trip #18 Yosemite National Park
This video was captured over 2 days spent at Yosemite National Park in California in June, 2014. Starting at the east entrance from Lee Vining, CA, we drove over Tioga Pass and got the first amazing views of Half Dome. Once in the Yosemite Valley, we spent most of the time along the river and in Yosemite Village. To finish off the trip, we went to the incredible Glacier Point at sunset.

After our hike in Lyell Canyon we had a little extra time so we went east on Tioga Road. Tioga Road is closed for the winter usually between late October and May, there is just too much snow to plow in winter. Plowing operations in Spring take 2-3 weeks!
We'll take a quick look at Lake Ellery which is just outside Yosemite National Park, then continue east just beyond the Pass to an overlook of Tioga Road descending from Tioga Pass.
After that we'll head west back into the Park for a view of Half Dome and Cloud's Rest from Olmsted Point.
The last shot is of some deer on our way west back through the Park just above Crane Flat-
ADVICE- if you stop to take photos of deer, do NOT be like the folks next to me who went tromping through the forest to get closer. The deer take off running when they hear the other people breaking branches in the woods.
Not in the film- part of why we went out here, we hadn't seen one of our favorite Rangers Foster Jones in awhile./ He often mans the Gate at Tioga Pass and it was great to get a chance to say hello.
