Tiong Bahru Info:
Tiong Bahru is a housing estate located in the Central Region of Singapore. Tiong Bahru was constructed in the 1920s by the Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT), the predecessor to the Housing Development Board (HDB) and an entity of the British colonial authority providing mass public housing in Singapore, and is the oldest housing estate in Singapore. The main estate consists of 30 apartment blocks with over 900 units of two to five rooms.
While many older residents have lived in the shophouses and flats here for decades, the younger generation flocks here for the food, shops, and culture.
Today, this neighbourhood is considered one of the hippest places in Singapore (due to its cafes and quaint shops) yet steeped in history. The name Tiong Bahru actually means ‘new cemetery’ – Tiong means ‘end’ in the Chinese Hokkien dialect, and Bahru means ‘new’ in Malay – because it used to be a burial ground. The lowlands were used to cultivate crops in the 19th century, while Pearl’s Hill housed a fortification for military personnel.

Nice place to shop, eat and have a hair cut for a budget price.

Tiong Bahru Market Singapore Info:
In 1955, the Tiong Bahru Market (Seng Poh Market) was constructed under the auspices of the National Environment Agency after some hawkers moved to an open area on Seng Poh Road.
The market was constructed of stalls with a simple wooden frame and zinc pitched roofs. Meats were hung without refrigeration. The Tiong Bahru market catered to the residents of the Tiong Bahru, Bukit Merah, and Henderson estates. Heritage street foods such as for mee, chwee kueh, Hokkien mee, pao, porridge, and roast pork were available in the market as well as a diverse number of goods for sale from textiles to flowers and many besides. bartering for the best price was common.
In 1993 and 2004, improvements were made to the market including a watertight roof, brighter lights, a broader walkway and garden lights. In 2004, the market was closed for two years for rebuilding. Stallholders were relocated to a temporary site on Kim Pong Road during this time. Kim Pong Road was named after Low Kim Pong (1837 – 1909) a local merchant and philanthropist, and the co-founder of the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce. In 2006, the new market opened. It was a concrete two storey structure with a wet market and retail stalls on the ground floor and upstairs, an area for hawkers. It remains a place of community heritage.
There are tours of the market, surrounding blocks of flats and the nearby WWII air raid shelters. In 2012, the National Heritage Board created an exhibition near the Tiong Bahru market to commemorate the battle for Singapore. Some, especially older residents and vendors, miss the vibrant atmosphere of the old market.

There’s something about Tiong Bahru. Walking around this heritage neighbourhood feels like travelling back in time to an era when walk-ups were all the rage, neighbours talked to each other and doors had clanky (but cute) grills.
The old-world charm, unique architecture, CBD fringe location and the peaceful pace, all contribute to making Tiong Bahru one of the most coveted ‘hoods in Singapore.

Residents launch campaign against illegal parking in Tiong Bahru estate - 05Jan2014
SINGAPORE: To curb illegal parking in the Tiong Bahru estate, some residents have taken to the streets to let motorists know of alternative places they can park their vehicles.
The area has become more popular in recent years with new eateries and cafes - but this has also led to parking problems.
On Sunday, MP for Tanjong Pagar GRC Indranee Rajah and residents distributed pamphlets to get motorists to park their vehicles legally.
The pamphlet detailed the location of nearly 700 parking lots in the estate.
This includes an open-air carpark at Blk 78 Moh Guan Terrace, and parking lots along Eng Watt Street and Eng Hoon Street.
Banners will also be displayed to remind motorists to park considerately.
The campaign - Is this your grandfather's road? - is organised by Tanjong Pagar-Tiong Bahru Citizens' Consultative Committee (CCC) and Seng Poh Residents' Committee (RC).
The campaign also serves as a platform to further explore the historical background of the estate as every road in Tiong Bahru is named after a pioneer of Singapore.
Over the past couple of years, some additional carpark space has been added in Tiong Bahru and some season parking lots converted for public use.
Despite this, residents still feel that the traffic congestion situation hasn't improved.
The MP of the area said this could be due to the fact that drivers are not aware of the availability of parking lots.
Ms Indranee Rajah, Senior Minister of State for Law and Education, and MP for Tanjong Pagar GRC, said: If you have to park a little bit further and walk 100 metres, it's not too far. You can have enforcement but enforcement is a cat-and-mouse game. You are always having to chase up the people parking illegally. It'll be so much better if people can park properly on a voluntary basis, and that's really about civic education.
