Tiritiri Matangi Island - Wildlife Sanctuary
Come and join us as we travelled to Tiritiri Matangi and on the way passed a number of Navy ships from around the world in Auckland for the NZ Navy's 75th Birthday.
Tiritiri Matangi Island is a wildlife sanctuary and one of New Zealand's most important and exciting conservation projects. It is located 30km north east of central Auckland and just 4km from the end of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula. A hundred and twenty years of farming had seen this 220-hectare island stripped of 94% of its native bush but between 1984 and 1994, volunteers planted between 250,000 and 300,000 trees. The Island is now 60% forested with the remaining 40% left as grassland for species preferring open habitat.
In conjunction with this planting programme, all mammalian predators were eradicated and a number of threatened and endangered bird and reptile species have been successfully introduced, including the flightless takahe, one of the world’s rarest species, and the tuatara. There are few places in New Zealand where you can readily see and walk amongst so many rare species.
Tiritiri Matangi Open Sanctuary Translocation
Located 30km north east of central Auckland and just 4km from the end of Whangaparaoa Peninsula, Tiritiri Matangi Island is one of New Zealand's most important and exciting conservation open sanctuary projects.
Translocation is one such method proving to positively change native endangered bird populations and aid conservation.
Written, Directed, and Produced by Aziz Al-Sa'afin (with the help of Auckland University of Technology, the Department of Conservation, and the Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi) this documentary takes a look into the world of Open Sanctuary Transloation and what it means for New Zealand's embodiment of conservation.

Tossed by the Wind: The rare and remarkable creatures of Tiritiri Matangi (Part One)
This video presents the illustated version of a podcast of the first of two blog posts about the open nature sanctuary of Tiritiri Matangi Island, near Auckland. It is just under twenty minutes long.
I introduce the blog post thus:
Just north-east of Auckland, New Zealand, lies the sanctuary island of Tiritiri Matangi, a high-value scientific reserve that is home to some of the rarest and weirdest creatures on the planet such as the kiwi and the tuatara. And yet you can go there, and even stay overnight. I went there for the most recent time in May 2019. Tripadvisor has awarded Tiritiri Matangi its Certificate of Excellence and, as of the date of publication, rates it at #2 out of 208 things to do in central Auckland!

4K Auckland Harbour NEW ZEALAND ニュージーランド 紐西蘭 Part1
Auckland City is the part of Auckland urban area covering the isthmus and most of the islands of the Hauraki Gulf. The core of Auckland City is the Auckland CBD, a major financial and commercial centre, surrounded by many suburbs. It was formerly the name of a local authority district that was governed by Auckland City Council; it lay within the wider Auckland Region, which was governed by Auckland Regional Council. Auckland City was disestablished as a local government district on 1 November 2010, when Auckland City Council was amalgamated with other councils of the Auckland Region into the new Auckland Council.
Waitematā Harbour is the main access by sea to Auckland, New Zealand. For this reason it is often referred to as Auckland Harbour, despite the fact that it is one of two harbours adjoining the city. The harbour forms the northern and eastern coasts of the Auckland isthmus and is crossed by the Auckland Harbour Bridge. It is matched on the southern side of the city by the shallower waters of the Manukau Harbour.

New Zealand Stichbird (Hihi) plays in a bird bath
The Hihi (also known as Stitchbird) is an endemic species of New Zealand and is rare. It is classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN red list of endangered species. This medium-sized forest species, feeds on nectar, insects and small fruits, just like the Tui and Bellbird.
An interesting fact about the Hihi is it is the only known bird to mate face to face.
In pre-European times, Hihi were found throughout the North Island and on several offshore islands. However the introduction of mammalian species and habitat loss led to a decline in numbers and eventual extinction on the mainland by 1884.
Habitat loss, the introduction of mammalian predators such as cats and rats and specimen collection probably contributed to the decline of Hihi on the mainland. They also appear to be especially prone to the effects of diseases, which may have been introduced to New Zealand with domestic birds.
Hihi only survived on Little Barrier Island (Hauturu) which was made into a nature reserve. In recent years efforts by conservationists have led to the reintroduction of Hihi onto other offshore islands such as Tiritiri Matangi and Kapiti Island, and onto Mainland Islands such as Maungatautari in the Waikato region and Karori Sanctuary in Wellington.
These birds observed in the video were seen near feeding stations at the Maungatautari southern enclosure.
