Tirumala Venkateswara Temple is one the most famous vedic temple in India. its located in the hill town of Tirumala, near Tirupati in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered prayers at the famous hill shrine of Lord Venkateswara at Tirumala here on Sunday.

Upon his arrival at the ancient temple, Modi was accorded a grand traditional reception amid chanting of Vedic hymns by the priests, who escorted him to the sanctum sanctorum along with temple officials.

Clad in a traditional attire, the Prime Minister also paid obeisance at the sub shrines of Sri Yoga Narasimha Swamy and Sri Ramajujacharya besides the golden Vimana Venkateswara, the sacred golden altar, the golden holy mast (Dwajastambham) inside the shrine.

He spend about half an hour in the temple, a temple official told PTI.

After offering prayers, the Prime Minister was honoured with a sacred silk cloth besides a memento of Lord Venkateswara and 'laddu' prasadam at the sprawling Ranga Mandapam, while the priests invoked the celestial blessings on Modi, he said.

Earlier, Andhra Pradesh Governor E S L Narasimhan, Chief Minister Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, Union Minister of State for Home G Kishan Reddy and others received the prime minister at the Tirupati airport at Renigunta after he landed from Colombo.

This is Modi's first visit to the hill shrine after becoming the Prime Minister for the second consecutive term.

He had earlier visited the shrine in his capacity as the Prime Ministerial candidate of the saffron party in May 2014 and also as Prime Minister in October 2015 and January 2017.

After offering prayers at the hill shrine, Modi flew back to New Delhi.

Tirupati is a major pilgrimage and cultural city in the Chittoor district of India.Tirupati is famous for Venkateswara Swamy temple dedicated to Lord Venkateswara, located about 20 kilometres (12 mi) north west of Tirupati in the Tirumala hills at an elevation of 853 metres (2,799 ft). One of the most important pilgrimage centers in the World, the temple draws millions of pilgrims and is the busiest pilgrimage center in the world. Tirupati has several temples and is a major economical and educational hub in the southern region of the state.
Tirumala Venkateswara Temple is a Hindu temple in the hill town of Tirumala, near Tirupati in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. It is around 600 km (370 mi) from Hyderabad, 138 km (86 mi) from Chennai and 291 km (181 mi) from Bangalore.
The Tirumala Hill is 853m above sea level and is about 10.33 square miles (27 km^2) in area. It comprises seven peaks, representing the seven heads of Adisesha, thus earning the name Seshachalam. The seven peaks are called Seshadri, Neeladri, Garudadri, Anjanadri, Vrushabhadri, Narayanadri and Venkatadri. The temple is on Venkatadri (also known as Venkatachala or Venkata Hill), the seventh peak, and is also known as the Temple of Seven Hills. The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Venkateswara, a form of the Hindu god Vishnu. Venkateswara is known by other names: Balaji, Govinda, and Srinivasa. The temple lies on the southern banks of Sri Swami Pushkarini, a holy water tank. The temple complex comprises a traditional temple building, with a number of modern queue and pilgrim lodging sites.
The temple is the richest pilgrimage centre, after the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, of any faith (at more than INR 50,000 crore ) and the most-visited place of worship in the world. The temple is visited by about 50,000 to 100,000 pilgrims daily (30 to 40 million people annually on average), while on special occasions and festivals, like the annual Brahmotsavam, the number of pilgrims shoots up to 500,000, making it the most-visited holy place in the world.
There are several legends associated with the manifestation of the Lord in Tirumala. According to one legend, the temple has a murti (deity) of Lord Venkateswara, which it is believed shall remain here for the entire duration of the present Kali Yuga.

Srivari Mettu is the alternate and short route to climb the Tirumala Hills by way. Srivari Mettu is at a distance of about 19 Kms from Tirupathi Railway Station/ RTC Bus stand. TTD has arranged free buses from station to reach Srivari Mettu and it runs at a frequency of every 30 minutes.

The veil has been lifted, albeit partially, on one of the best kept secrets in the country: How rich is Tirumala Temple's Lord Venkateswara? Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) officials indicated that 4.5 tonnes of gold have been deposited in banks and that the temple administration is in the process of depositing one more ton of the yellow metal in the State Bank of India soon. Calculated at today's rates, the total cost of the 5,500 kg 'disclosed' gold with the TTD stands at Rs 1,320 crore. Temple insiders say that this could just be a partial estimate of the total wealth of what is regarded as the richest temple of the country. However, in July 2014 a contender emerged in the form of the Padmanabha Swami Temple in Thiruvananthapuram where an inventory revealed that its total wealth stood at Rs 1 lakh crore. But those championing the cause of the Tirumala temple contend that the total wealth with Lord Balaji has not been made public, and, therefore, could be more than that of the Kerala temple. According to the temple authorities, the 4.5 tonnes of gold already in the banks fetch an interest of 80kg of pure gold every year. The three gold deposits made earlier in 2010, 2011 and 2014 total 4.5 tonnes. The largest single deposit made so far by the temple administration was 1,800kg in August 2014 with the SBI.

Tirumala is the abode of Lord Sri Venkateswara or Balaji or Srinivasa. The temple has its origin in Vaishnavism. According to Varaha Purana, Adi Varaha manifested himself on the western banks of Swami Pushkarini. Lord Vishnu in the form of Venkateswara came to reside on the southern banks of Swami Pushkarini.

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) on Saturday has approved its annual budget for the year 2016-17 with an estimated revenue of Rs. 2,678.07 crores.
For the first time in the history of the TTD, the income derived from the temple Hundi by way of offerings is put at Rs. 1,010 crore, surpassing the one thousand crore mark.
The second major source of income is Interest on investments with the estimates being pegged at Rs. 778.93 crores.
