Lake Titicaca Travel Guide (Uros, Amantaní and Taquile Islands)
To close off our trip to Peru we headed from Cuzco to Puno with the intention of covering Lake Titicaca (Lago Titicaca) as best we could over the duration of two days. Our trip started from Puno early in the morning when we boarded a boat bound for the Uros Island. The Uros people, who lives on floating reed islands, welcomed us to their floating islands where we had a chance to tour around and purchase some souvenirs.

Afterwards, we took a traditional rowing boat made out of reeds to another island before heading off to Amantaní. Upon arriving our host family greeted us and we headed to our homestay where we had a traditional lunch consisting of Quinoa soup, potatoes, fried cheese and rice. Afterwards we hiked to the top of the Island (Pachamama) where we had incredible 360 degree views. It felt like we could almost touch the clouds. In the evening we dressed up in traditional attire (ponchos) and headed over for a dance party with live traditional music. The following morning we visited our final island (Taquile) before heading back to Puno. Overall, it was an incredible trip and one we recommend highly; however, be sure to do the two day trip and opposed to the one day option for a more relaxed time.
Lake Titicaca Travel Guide (Uros, Amantaní, Taquile) to Puno, Peru Travel Video Transcript:
So we are taking a really fun overnight trip from Puno today to visit Lake Titicaca. Yeah, we're going to visit several islands and do a homestay overnight. Yeah, and we'll get to meet the different communities that live here because we have Aymara people and Quechua people. So we've just arrived at our first island. And this one is called Corazon de Lago which means the heart of the lake. And this is an Aymara community that lives on a floating reed island so let's go have a look around. Let's check it out.
So it is a bit of a strange sensation walking on the reed islands because it is not solid ground and your feet do sink in a little bit but not to the point where you feel like you're going to fall through and you know go in the water. But still kind of interesting.
Okay, so what have we learned so far on this floating reed island? So we've visiting the Uros floating reed islands and there is approximately 80 to 90 of them. And the people who originally came here were escaping hostile neighbors.
So this is quite a secluded environment for them.
We've made it to our third island of the day. This one is called Amantani and this island is actually home to Quechua people whereas the first two that we visited were home to the Aymara people.
So aside from meeting our host families, what I'm most excited for is food. Because it is already lunchtime. It's a little bit past our lunch time actually. And we forgot to pack snacks. Yep. So I'm starving. So before we settle in we're going to get some local food. Yeah, and apparently they are vegetarian on this island, so we're going to be having a Quinoa soup and then just like potatoes and roots and different vegetables. Cheese and stuff like that. Cheese, yes. So it should be good.
So are you doing okay? A little bit out of breathe? Yeah, a little bit out of breath. We're still feeling the altitude. Actually Lake Titicaca is higher than Cuzco if you can believe that.
Sopa de Quinoa. Ah, sopa de quinoa. Quinoa soup. Ah, que rico.
So we reached the top of Pachamama. How are the views? Oh, we sure did. The views are insane here. It is almost like you're touching the clouds. It is like you can reach up and touch them.
So we're all dressed up, we've had our dinner and now it is time to go to the party. And we are dressed up in traditional outfits. Party!
Alright, so it is a new day and we are visiting a new island. Yes, this is our last stop on Lake Titicaca. This is Taquile Island and we're just going to take a wander around and see what we find. Yes, maybe we'll find our guide and she can tell us a bit of the history of the place. Let's go find her.
This is part of our Travel in Peru series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Peruvian culture, Peruvian arts, Peruvian foods, Peruvian religion, Peruvian cuisine and Peruvian people. All things Peruano. The best of Comida Peruana and Cocina Peruana.

ON AN ISLAND MADE OF REEDS - Lake Titicaca - Puno - Peru
On an island made of reeds, we learn how the Uros people build their floating islands on the highest navigatable lake in the world, Lake Titikaka.
These Peruvian natives survived the Inka invasion on their boats, also made of reeds! This unique way of building is ingrained in their culture, we speak with a native that explains the difficulties of living on the island. They need to constantly be replacing the reeds every 10 to 15 days, and in order to do this, they work as a community - a very inspiring way of living and a must see in your lifetime.

Traveling to Peru, Puno-lake Titicaca
Our experience from our trip to the highest navigable lake in the world, with a surface elevation of 3,812 metres! The hospitality of the people at the Amantani island was admirable and we will never forget them! But..the altitute sickness was inevitable..Enjoy!
Puno & Lake Titicaca tour; Peru
Exploring Puno, Sillustani, Uros & Taquile island. It has been recorded in March 2019 and I've structured it in a travel preview/sample format for people who plan to visit (and not only) to get an idea of what they can expect to see and do here.
Uros Islands on Lake Titicaca: life on a floating island for Peruvian Indians
Life on a floating island can’t be easy – but the Peruvian Indians of the Uros Islands, Lake Titicaca, have been doing it for centuries. Take a balsas boat from Puno and discover a fascinating aspect of Peruvian culture – the floating islands of Uros - made entirely from totora reeds. We visit one floating village.

Welcome to the Uros Islands.
My name is Percy, the leader of this community. There are six families living on this island, which is 40 metres long and 30 metres wide. Family members always stay near their brothers, or near their fathers and mothers. Fathers and mothers are important – they are leaders of the community.
The most important activity in this community is fishing. We also have handicraft. The women make small objects for Uros life. The men use reeds of totoras to make small boats for sailing and big boats to be used as gondolas for tourist transportation or taxis in Lake Titicaca.
My name is Amalia, and I live on this island with six families in total. I’m married, and I have one child who is six years old. I work on this island, especially for men. I cook for the husbands. When they are working, cutting the totoras, they need food. I wake up at about 6am. Families normally go to bed at about 8pm.
We cut many reeds of totora to make the houses we put on the islands. Totora grows in another place, we cut it and bring it to the island. We also fix any broken houses using green totoras, not dry totoras. We travel four kilometres every six weeks to gather fresh totoras to put on the island. We use totoras roots to create small gardens on the island and sometimes we plant crops.
Our boats are called balsas. The balsas are our local traditional transportation. Children use small balsas to go to school and men use them to go fishing. We use the big balsas – that we call Mercedes Benz - as transportation to go from this island to other places and come back here.
Here brothers and sisters work together – we live here. And we do good work to make sure the island stays afloat. We use these reeds and roots to keep the island afloat. This island is held together by many root pieces – that’s its foundation. We cut and bring big block pieces. From this place to another it’s long kilometres. Here they’re like brick shapes. In each block piece, we put a eucalyptus rod, which we get from the mainland, not from the island. Then we use a rope to tie it. We tie all the root pieces together. This protects the reeds from breaking apart and so it holds its position. Local people call these blocks idli. This makes the islands float.
This island has 12 anchors. This holds it in place in the windy season. If it’s too windy, we’ll end up in Bolivia – and we don’t have Bolivian passports. Ancestors on Uros used to use this kind of rope, but it doesn’t last for a long time. Now we use synthetic rope to tie the foundations. This is a tool to cut the green reeds of the totora. On these foundations we put many layers of reeds. Firstly, we put them in one direction, and then the other direction, so it makes a crisscross shape. The block is approximately 1 metre. The totoras layer is 2 metres. The whole thing is 3 metres. The houses are made out of totoras reeds. This is for the rainy season or protection.
They use this tower for local communication in the Uros community. They call to other people for local activities and celebrations.
Let’s go and take a look at the houses. This is a family house – it’s a modern house.
In the rainy season, we use plastic and reed mats on the roof. Local people dry their totoras reeds in this shape. They use the dried reeds to make houses. This is another family house. This family is drying reeds of totoras to put over their roof. This is my house. This big one is one of the first houses. It belongs to my father. It’s the first house near the lake.
