Lake Titicaca Travel Guide (Uros, Amantaní and Taquile Islands)
To close off our trip to Peru we headed from Cuzco to Puno with the intention of covering Lake Titicaca (Lago Titicaca) as best we could over the duration of two days. Our trip started from Puno early in the morning when we boarded a boat bound for the Uros Island. The Uros people, who lives on floating reed islands, welcomed us to their floating islands where we had a chance to tour around and purchase some souvenirs.

Afterwards, we took a traditional rowing boat made out of reeds to another island before heading off to Amantaní. Upon arriving our host family greeted us and we headed to our homestay where we had a traditional lunch consisting of Quinoa soup, potatoes, fried cheese and rice. Afterwards we hiked to the top of the Island (Pachamama) where we had incredible 360 degree views. It felt like we could almost touch the clouds. In the evening we dressed up in traditional attire (ponchos) and headed over for a dance party with live traditional music. The following morning we visited our final island (Taquile) before heading back to Puno. Overall, it was an incredible trip and one we recommend highly; however, be sure to do the two day trip and opposed to the one day option for a more relaxed time.
Lake Titicaca Travel Guide (Uros, Amantaní, Taquile) to Puno, Peru Travel Video Transcript:
So we are taking a really fun overnight trip from Puno today to visit Lake Titicaca. Yeah, we're going to visit several islands and do a homestay overnight. Yeah, and we'll get to meet the different communities that live here because we have Aymara people and Quechua people. So we've just arrived at our first island. And this one is called Corazon de Lago which means the heart of the lake. And this is an Aymara community that lives on a floating reed island so let's go have a look around. Let's check it out.
So it is a bit of a strange sensation walking on the reed islands because it is not solid ground and your feet do sink in a little bit but not to the point where you feel like you're going to fall through and you know go in the water. But still kind of interesting.
Okay, so what have we learned so far on this floating reed island? So we've visiting the Uros floating reed islands and there is approximately 80 to 90 of them. And the people who originally came here were escaping hostile neighbors.
So this is quite a secluded environment for them.
We've made it to our third island of the day. This one is called Amantani and this island is actually home to Quechua people whereas the first two that we visited were home to the Aymara people.
So aside from meeting our host families, what I'm most excited for is food. Because it is already lunchtime. It's a little bit past our lunch time actually. And we forgot to pack snacks. Yep. So I'm starving. So before we settle in we're going to get some local food. Yeah, and apparently they are vegetarian on this island, so we're going to be having a Quinoa soup and then just like potatoes and roots and different vegetables. Cheese and stuff like that. Cheese, yes. So it should be good.
So are you doing okay? A little bit out of breathe? Yeah, a little bit out of breath. We're still feeling the altitude. Actually Lake Titicaca is higher than Cuzco if you can believe that.
Sopa de Quinoa. Ah, sopa de quinoa. Quinoa soup. Ah, que rico.
So we reached the top of Pachamama. How are the views? Oh, we sure did. The views are insane here. It is almost like you're touching the clouds. It is like you can reach up and touch them.
So we're all dressed up, we've had our dinner and now it is time to go to the party. And we are dressed up in traditional outfits. Party!
Alright, so it is a new day and we are visiting a new island. Yes, this is our last stop on Lake Titicaca. This is Taquile Island and we're just going to take a wander around and see what we find. Yes, maybe we'll find our guide and she can tell us a bit of the history of the place. Let's go find her.

Visit Lake Titicaca Travel Guide for Peru and Bolivia
We had privilege of visiting Lake Titicaca from both the Peru and Bolivia. The question we're often asked is which side is better? The easy answer is that it is really worth visiting both side of lago titicaca. The following is a travel guide for our extended stays on both sides of Lake Titicaca.
On the Peruvian side we started our journey off in Puno where we boarded a boat heading out to Uros Island where we met people still living on the floating reed islands. We then went further onward for a home stay.
On the Bolivian journey we visited Isla del Sol from Copacabana as a day trip hiking all over the island before heading back to Copacabana to visit markets.

Good morning! Good morning everyone. It's bright and early today. We're here at Copacabana and this is the Bolivian side of Lake Titicaca. We are going to an island called Isla del Sol which is the island of the sun. And we almost didn't think we'd be able to go today. We woke up and there is thunder and lightening. There was all kinds of rain. It was pouring. It was pouring outside but it has really cleared up now and we're excited to see if we can take the trip today. So the island is somewhere off in the distance over there.
So we have just arrived in Isla del Sol and the sun came out just in time. Now we're going to go visit some ruins and then we're planning to hike from the north end of the island to the south end.
So here we are just swaying on the hammocks. Yep. What are your final impressions of Copacabana since we're leaving tomorrow? Well, Copacabana was everything we wanted it to be basically. We had been hiking in Machu Picchu, you know hiking the Inca Trail and then we really had a busy hiking tour while we were visiting Lake Titicaca on the Peruvian side. So we just wanted to come to a place that was really chill, that had a kind of a relaxed vibe and that was affordable. And Copacabana checked off all three of those boxes.

PUNO, PERU | Things to do at 12,500 feet up!
Puno was one of our favorite spots on our Peruvian trip! With only 150,000 people, it's small enough to not feel cramped like a big city, but large enough to have great sights and food.
We began our day at 12,500 feet up by struggling with some altitude sickness. Once we found a delicious cafe just outside Plaza de Armas, we began to perk up!
After a quick pitstop at our AirBnb, we ventured even higher in elevation to Mirador El Condor which has a gorgeous overview of the city and Lake Titicaca.
Then we returned to central Puno and enjoyed a tasty lunch with a great view. Several Coca de Mates may have been consumed as well!

Visiting Lake Titicaca in Bolivia and Peru | DJI Mavic Pro | Sony A7RII | 2017
Located on the border between Peru and Bolivia, Lake Titicaca is the world’s highest navigable lake, with a surface elevation of over 3,800 m. It’s peaceful beauty and ancient cultural traditions make visiting the lake a highlight of any South American itinerary.
We spent a week exploring the area around Lake Titicaca on our recent trip to Bolivia and Peru and got a chance to visit 4 out of the 6 islands. We started in La Paz, made our way to Copacabana, the gateway to Isla del Sol, and then continued onwards to Puno, the getaway to Uros, Amanti and Taquile islands in Peru.
For more on visiting these unique islands on Lake Titicaca, check out our post:

City of Puno and Lake Titicaca - Peru
A short video showing my trip to the City of Puno in Peru and the beautiful Lake Titicaca its flowing islands and Taquile Island.

Puno is a city in southeastern Peru, located on the shore of Lake Titicaca. It is the capital city of the Puno Region and the Puno Province with a population of approximately 140,839 (2015 estimate). The city was established in 1668 by viceroy Pedro Antonio Fernández de Castro as capital of the province of Paucarcolla with the name San Juan Bautista de Puno. The name was later changed to San Carlos de Puno, in honor of king Charles II of Spain. Puno has several churches dating back from the colonial period; they were built to service the Spanish population and evangelize the natives.

Tourist Traps and Floating Islands on Lake Titicaca | Puno, Peru
What a wet day we had today… It rained the whole morning! It started off with a quick tour of the Uros (floating) Islands on the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca. As with a lot of tourism, we felt these islands had lost some charm as it was all focused on us buying things and forcing us to pay additional money to go out on a boat that lasted 5 minutes. It wasn’t a bad experience, but definitely not an authentic encounter. We finished off the day on Taquile Island, which was beautiful!
