Visiting The Tobago Cays - Jewels Of The Caribbean!
The Tobago Cays are some of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean. In this video we hop aboard the Yannis Catamaran and sail around the islands. We snorkel with turtles, laze in the sun and see the island where part of Pirates Of The Caribbean was filmed!

Sailing the Grenadines and Tobago Cays
The beautiful journey continues... WE have left Grenada and are heading north towards St. Vincent and the Grenadines. It feels good to move on to the other islands and stretch our our boats sea legs. Happy to be on the move and excited to see what the Grenadines has to offer and man does it have a lot! WE first sailed to Carricou the island just north of Grenada and then to Sandy Island. A small taste of another paradise where we swim with a nurse shark in the little lagoon. Then we sail up to Union Island and check ourselves in for the next month of exploring the Grenadines, have sundowners on little Happy Island and watch the kitesurfing show as the sun goes down, and then find a stunning Marine Reserve of the Tobago Cays and swim with the sea turtles. If this is what to expect as we continue than there are ZERO complaints here! Enjoy and thanks for watching our adventures.

This small group of five islands is the definition of paradise. Just calm palm tree covered beaches and crystal clear water. You'll find them in the southern end of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines chain, right next to Mayreau.
The Tobago Cays are a great anchorage for boaters and offers great snorkeling with lots of rays and sea turtles.
I (Ryan) got there via a tall ship cruise aboard the Diamant from Island Windjammers. An experience I highly recommend.
Enjoy the views!

A Salty Passion: Hi! We are Ryan (RumShopRyan) and Crystal (Castaway Crystal), we document, photograph, and film the best the Caribbean has to offer. Whether it’s stunning beaches, relaxing hotels, friendly restaurants, or soggy beach bars…we want to share it and inspire others to explore the islands.
MEET US!
Who Is RumShopRyan:
Howdy! I’m Ryan and I hail from the land-locked, can’t get any further from the ocean, state of Kansas. I moved to laid back southwest Florida in 2001. I didn’t know a single person and didn’t have a job. Risky I know, but the ocean was calling and I had to answer.
I’m a huge fan of Kansas City sports, so you’ll probably see a lot of Jayhawks, Chiefs and Royals attire in my photos. Kansas City is a great town and I’m glad I’m from there, but the coastal life was calling. It’s kind of like Kenny Chesney’s “island boy” song. Check out the lyrics and you’ll see what I mean.
I write because I’m passionate about the Caribbean and the island lifestyle, and it’s my way to share it with you. If it has anything to do with the Caribbean, rum drinks, beach style music, or Caribbean culture, you’ll be able to find it on this site.
When in the Caribbean you’ll find a camera around my neck and note pad in my pocket. This is how I document the experiences in unique and interesting ways and bring it back to you, the Castaways.
Who is Castaway Crystal:
I was raised in Southwest Florida so it’s no surprise that I have a love for beaches, water and nature. As a child, most weekends were spent fishing in the warm gulf waters on the family boat. As an adult, most weekends are spent soaking up the sun on Ft. Myers Beach. Even though I have always loved the coastal life, I don’t think I fully appreciated it until I moved to Nashville, TN. I’m all about experiencing new things, and as a Licensed Massage Therapist I thought it would be amazing to massage some of Nashville’s biggest stars (a girl can dream right?). But I missed the sun and sand too much—and let’s not forget the rum runners! After a year I couldn’t take it anymore, this sun bunny moved back to her coast of somewhere beautiful.
I’ve always been passionate about photography and writing but my passions never really had a purpose until I met Ryan. I couldn’t be happier being Ryan’s first mate and sharing my photos and stories with you. May they inspire you to go after your tropical dreams and wishes. Make a plan…Set a date…Just go!

On March 24th, 2015 we had a next amazing flight in the Caribbean! After we discovered the famous Tobago Cays some days ago with a beautiful sailing boat, we now was flying over the five uninhabited cays, heavenly lagoons with green turtles, colourful fishes and crystal clear waters on our flight from Union Island to St.Vincent! Here we will stay some days to hike up the active La Soufriere Volcano (4048ft/ 1178m).

Tobago Cays in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
Tobago Cays in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
The Tobago Cays are an archipelago located in the Southern Grenadines comprising five small islands and extensive coral reefs. The cays - Petit Rameau, Petit Bateau, Baradal, Petit Tabac and Jamesby - are all uninhabited and are a popular tourism destination.
The Tobago Cays are now the key element of the Tobago Cays Marine Park run by the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines government. The Marine Park consists of a 1,400-acre (5.7 km2) sand-bottom lagoon which encompasses the five cays, the inhabited island of Mayreau and the 4 km Horseshoe Reef. The Marine Park was listed as a regionally significant ecosystem under the SPAW Protocol in December 2014.
The most extensive and well-developed coral reef complexes in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines occur on shallow shelves around the windward sides of Mayreau and Union Islands and the Cays themselves. In addition, principal vegetation types include beach vegetation and dry forest. With the exception of a small mangrove in Petit Rameau and salt pond in Mayreau, there are no wetlands in the Cays.
Major users of the area include: cruise ships (an estimated 50,000 visitors each year of which 10,000 visit the Cays); yachts (an estimated 3,000 yachts anchor in the lagoon each year); day charters (from nearby hotels); sport divers and snorkelers; and fishing enthusiasts.
The Grenadines are geologically older than St. Vincent and are situated on an extensive shallow bank of volcanic origin – known as the southern Lesser Antilles arc platform (SLAAP). The SLAAP is a product of Miocene uplift and characterized by Eocene to Pliocene extrusive to intrusive igneous rocks along with sedimentary rocks such as limestone, marl, and chert, and epiclastic arc-derived volcaniclastic units composed of mudstone, sandstone, and conglomerate. The islands are composed of a variety of volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The area is an active subduction zone, and lies along the interface of the Caribbean and South American Tectonic plates. Kick ’em Jenny is an undersea volcano north of Grenada, and there is also another less active volcano named Kick ’em Jack in the area. The shallow bank of the Grenadines extends from St Vincent to Grenada, and has a natural boundaries of the Tobago Trough to the east and the Grenada Trough to the west, where the depth increases rapidly. The shallow bank creates ideal conditions for the formation of productive seagrass beds, mangroves and coral reefs.
Surrounding the Tobago Cays are several shallow fringing reefs around the islands, and a major bank-barrier reef known as Horseshoe Reef. Other major reefs in the park include World’s End Reef, Egg Reef and Mayreau Gardens. The fringing reefs around Mayreau and the Mayreau Gardens reef are considered to be the most biodiverse and healthy, with Horseshoe Reef and the reef around Petit Tabac being the next richest. Finally, the World’s End and Egg reef, as well as the other fringing reefs are considered to be the most degraded and least diverse in the park. The common corals on the reefs are Montastrea, Porites, Acropora, Millepora and Siderastrea species, as well as patches of soft corals such as Gorgonians (Sea Fans) and sponges. Large fish, such as barracuda and jacks, are occasionally found in the park, although most of the fish species are small. Algae and disease are prominent across all reefs and affect coral health. Surveys in 2007 concluded that most reefs were dominated by dead coral rubble and had live coral cover between 5% and 30%, and all reefs are considered to be in decline.
The Marine Park contains a number of important threatened species, both terrestrial and marine. There are populations of Brown Pelican, Bridled Terns and Iguanas in the park, and there are many migratory birds which pass through the area. The beaches and sea grass beds are feeding and nesting grounds for Green Turtles, Hawksbill Turtles and Leatherback Turtles. The reefs are home to many species of listed coral from the Milleporidae, Alcyonacea and Scleractinia families, there are also populations of Queen Conch and Caribbean Spiny lobster in the park.

Back in paradise, Tobago cays in the Grenadines.
Back in paradise, our beloved Tobago cays in the Grenadines. The heart of Caribbean, where we never want to leave when we arrive :) But thats a nice thing about sailing around in our Jeanneau Sun Odyssey in the Caribbean, you find new places all the time, and if you want to, you can go back to your favorite islands.
Anchoring up in the middle of the small islands, behind Horseshoe reef. Safe from all the swell, we swim with turtles and other cool creatures beneath the surface. I love snorkeling and free diving here in Caribbean, always something fun to see! This time I was lucky, i saw my very first sting ray, right under our sailboat. Awesome!
And the turtles showed up in numbers, swimming around peacefully. That make me so happy.
And the beautiful beaches are laying there, ready to be enjoyed. Even thou theres lot of boats there, you get to explore the waters and the beaches all by yourself! How nice is that?! I don’t know what the other boat people are doing, but I really don’t mind that we get to go around alone on places like this.
So, boys and girls, get in your shorts and bikinis and come explore with us!

Sailing to the Beautiful beaches in Tobago cays, Grenadines
More fun from paradise! I love sailing in the Grenadines, and its superfun when we get to meet up with friends! We sailed from Union island with SY Isis, and Sophisticated lady caught up with us in Tobago cays and the beautiful beaches.
We spend time exploring the islands, snorkeling and fooling around with hula hoops and drinking beers on the beautiful beach. And testet out the splash drone. The weather finally turned around and gave us blue skies and sunshine! What more do you want in a place like this? The hurricane season is finally over!
Grenada is nice, but it feels so good to get so see the other islands in caribbean, finally! And swim with turtles, that I love to do!

St. Vincent & the Grenadines - Ep. 3 - Mayreau and Tobago Cays
We get to Salt Whistle Bay, off the Island of Mayreau, walk to the town on the Islands of Mayreau--the one town--and provision. We spend the night in Tobago Cays, a Marine National Park, and share a candle lit dinner on picnic tables on the beach. Electricity is obtained through individual generators, turned on only a few hours a day. Check your privilege folks. And shift your paradigm about what matters.
