The Works:Two young artists' works that reflect the current political crisis, Kogei at HKU museum &
It’s now heading for five months since the anti-extradition bill protests began. In the first episode of this season, we talked about the creative methods some protesters are adopting to deliver their political messages. Today, we’re looking at the works of two young artists that reflect their perspectives of current events.
The term “Kogei” in Japanese means “traditional arts and crafts” and has a long history. The crafts are divided into eight categories that incorporate pottery, textiles, lacquerware, metalworking, doll-making, bamboo, woodworking, and papermaking. Five requirements are necessary for an object to be officially recognised as being an example of a traditional Japanese craft. It must be for regular use, mainly handmade, using traditional techniques and materials and made in a specific region identified with that craft. On show at the University of Hong Kong, until 3rd November, the exhibition “Living Kogei” contains 70 works from the Ise Collection by prominent and contemporary Japanese artists.

Karatsu City in Saga - How to get there from Fukuoka
Karatsu (唐津) is a coastal city in Saga Prefecture on Kyushu, about 50 kilometers west of Fukuoka. In the past, Karatsu was a major stop for ships making the journey towards Korea and China because it is one of the closest Japanese cities to the Korean Peninsula.
Today the city is known for its castle, the annual Karatsu Kunchi festival (November 2-4) and its local pottery. Several more attractions are found on the nearby rural Higashi Matsuura Peninsula, including beautiful coastal scenery and the ruins of a huge castle. Leave a comment, like and subscribe.

Forma Hungarica: Post War Hungarian Ceramics
Forma Hungarica: Post-War Hungarian Ceramics is the first major exhibition in the UK to showcase Dr Graham Cooley’s phenomenal collection of Hungarian ceramics and paintings which have – until now – remained largely undiscovered.
The exhibition, which was on display 2 May – 20 June 2015 at the King’s Lynn Arts Centre, featured over 400 ceramics, from the largest private collection of post-war Hungarian ceramics, and 100 Hungarian paintings owned by Dr Graham Cooley, a well-known collector of 20th century design. Along with the accompanying book of the same name, it aims to shine a spotlight on the hidden treasures of post-war Hungarian ceramics and to tell the long-forgotten stories of their artists and designers.
It is also the first time the work of two of the most prominent figures of the era, Géza Gorka (the great establishment figure) and Lívia Gorka (his rebellious daughter) has been displayed in a special exhibition in the UK.
A strong cultural policy emerged during the Communist era that mixed traditional folk pottery and modern ‘socialist’ art, which developed into a unique and progressive Hungarian style. The state promoted the Hungarian ceramics industry with ceramic factories where young graduates could train and state-funded exchange programs, study trips, exhibitions, fairs and symposiums.
In the state-driven ‘home improvement’ campaigns after 1956, modern Hungarian ceramics became fashionable and trendy. Independent studios and workshops emerged and produced some of the most original ceramics of the 20th century. Post-war international successes at major international events further consolidated Hungary’s role as the leader in progressive ceramics.
However, much of this work was developed in isolation from the West, and most of these great practitioners have never been written about or exhibited outside of Hungary.
The exhibition and accompanying book aim to bridge this gap in the cultural history of 20th century Europe. In the book, Dr Cooley and Peter Langh – a design expert from the 567 Gallery in Budapest and in his own words a ‘cultural memory rescuer’ – explain why we should all be fascinated by the curious and beautiful work of Hungarian ceramicists, and why Hungarian artists excelled at this craft skill, like no other nation, during the Communist period. It is the first publication on the subject written in English.
Dr Graham Cooley said: “Little has been researched, exhibited or published about post-war Hungarian ceramics until now. My passion for these beautiful objects has grown over time as my knowledge and understanding about them has deepened. I am delighted to be sharing my collection in what I hope is a fitting homage to the ceramicists of the era, giving them the platform and attention they deserve.”
Ancient Kiln Site
[Anchor Lead]
An ancient kiln site where blue celadon was made has been discovered in Jinan, Jeollabuk-do Province. Experts say the site was probably created before the Goryeo period.
[Pkg]
This rural village is located 300 meters above sea level. At the foot of the mountain, numerous pieces of indigo celadon are scattered around an empty site. Many of the pieces are broken saggars that were used to bake high-end celadon. The early kiln site made of bricks has been found to measure 21 meters in length.
[Soundbite] Cho Myung-il(Kunsan Nat'l Univ. Museum) : Brick kilns were the very first kilns to be used in celadon production in Korea.
Experts believe that the site was created during King Gyeonhwon's reign of the late Baekje period, when the kingdom was engaged in vigorous commerce with China's Wuyue Kingdom, the cradle of celadon.
[Soundbite] Kwak Jang-keun(Curator, Kunsan Nat'l Univ. Museum) : If this discovery is found to have something to do with the late Baekje period, it will probably mean that celadon was first produced in Korea much earlier than has been previously thought.
However, more evidence is required, as Goryeo has been regarded as the origin of Korean celadon for more than 100 years since Japanese colonial rule.
[Soundbite] Um Ki-il(Curator, Jinan History Museum) : Research into celadon and kilns still lags behind. If more comprehensive research is conducted, we can find out when the first celadon was produced and how it spread to other regions.
With the discovery of early-period celadon and brick pieces, discussions on whenceladon was first produced on the Korean Peninsula are expected to gain pace.

Sha Sha Higby at the Asian Lacquer Craft Exchange Research Project in Hanoi
I went to Viet Nam to dance and participated in a conference of the Asian Lacquer Craft Exchange Research Project in Hanoi. It was about lacquer from the urushi tree, a declining craft/art form that has been around for 8000 thousand years unless we can protect it now and through using it in the modern arts. Amazing that all these art and craft forms can be endangered in my single lifetime.
It was thrilling to do the dance in front of all the lacquer artists, young and old. We were trying to illustrate to the public that the art of the hand must be preserved after the thousands of years of existence. Life is beautiful in the end, the cycles of life turning in way we can participate to make a ritual that unites cultures and generations of artists. It was perfect to be in a situation dancing amongst those who use their hands for their craft and art and the general public.
I felt embraced by all the artists watching on that turbulent rainy night eveing, the chaos of the opening as I sat there in my costume for an hour in my frozen position listening to the honorary praises. I could peak through my mask through a tiny opening at the ribbon cutting and the gorgeous Vietnamese’s women coming out in their beautiful long silk dresses of bright colors and patterns (Hanoi is famous for silk).
Amongst the narrow and tall French pillared buildings of chaotic colorful city of Hanoi, we shared lectures of various aspects of Asian lacquer from Viet nam, Korea, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Japan with, workshops from artists about Japanese ‘Chinkin,”Kinma” carving with tiny dots on lacquer (Kinma) and inlaying graduated color and sparkle, shell inlay, Myanmar carving, Vietnamese shell river shell and escargot techniques, mixing the pigment for the Vietnamese flat paintings, followed by workshops where we could make objects ourselves by grinding ,sanding through color layers of lacquer prepared ahead of time, or carve a line drawing with an adapted house nail, or make string talismans..
I wove around and was lost continually through the winding streets of Hanoi.
Had a an amazing day out in a village visiting a temple in the rain honoring a shell inlay artist from the 11th century, haunted and beaten by a hurricane, roof in tatters of the but so poignant, As the storm winds passed from above, revealing barren rose pink and gold plaster colored walls of the town. One could catch the glimmer or inlaid shell alters (they were Catholic) of each house glittering in the doorways of the ensuing darkening clouds approaching. Such incredible worksmanship, the whole village did this, we searched for the shop for the place they make the shell but the rain was coming faster and faster, so we turned back and went home. The next day we went out to the mountains to take the lacquer sap from the thin trees. We learned that once taken, the sap had to be stirred for 8 hours for 3 to four days and mixed it with pine resin that had been heated or boiled. Maybe it is 8 hours over a period of 3 or 4 days.
We must have this happening in a museum in the United Staes or Europe!!
Travel Story Ep01 Journey of a 20-year-old, Lindie Botes #1
Subscribe to arirang!
Journey of a 20-year-old, Lindie Botes
Lindie Botes is a 20-year-old woman from South Africa, who has a pretty Korean name Sinae. When she visited Korea for the first time in the winter of 2010, she became fascinated by its charm. To describe her unforgettable journey, she wrote an essay book that won the second prize at a contest entitled I Love Korea, which was organized by the South Korean embassy in South Africa. The award also earned her a plane ticket to Korea.
In the summer of 2013, after a 17-hour flight, Lindie arrived in Korea to meet with her Korean pen pal and discover the hidden charm of Korea. The two friends have become close over the past two years by exchanging letters and photos on a social networking site. Together they made a bucket list of things to do.
Lindie wanted to get a trendy hairstyle in Korea and take sticker pictures with Hyo-jin. And Hyo-jin, for her part, wanted to show Lindie the Korean countryside. She decided to take Lindie, a city-dweller, to a village in Gokseong County, where her grandmother lives to show her the genuine charm of Korea represented by the scenic Seomjin River and steam train engines, which are hard to come by even in Korea these days. When Lindie visited the village, she was treated to a nutritious meal prepared by Hyo-jin's grandmother and tried her hand at plucking chili peppers, which are an essential ingredient in Korean cuisine.
Their journey, which transcended national boundaries and language barriers, will remind our viewers of the time when they were 20 and full of curiosity.

Hội An, Vietnam Travel Video Guide
Hội An was the most important trading port in South East Asia in the 16th and 17th Century. It traded items like silk, ceramics and spices with China, Japan, Europe, India, and even Arabia.
Then due to certain changes, it sat dormant for 200 years, remaining unchanged, until recently discovered by tourists.
I interviewed Eric Kappeler, a Swiss-born sculptor living in Hội An.
I also get to see a display of Cham dancing, and visit Marble Mountain, where sculptors have made a vision of hell in the subterranean caves.
Tôi phỏng vấn Eric Kappeler, một nhà điêu khắc Thụy Sĩ sinh sống ở Hội An.

The deeper the blue becomes, the more strongly it calls man towards the infinite, awakening in him a desire for the pure and, finally, for the supernatural... The brighter it becomes, the more it loses its sound, until it turns into silent stillness and becomes white.

APT6/ Mansudae Art Studio (North Korea: DPRK)
DELVE DEEPER SUBSCRIBE to be the first to go behind-the-scenes/ Curator Nicholas Bonner takes a tour of work from The Mansudae Art Studio in APT6.
The Mansudae Art Studio is an official artist studio (changjaksa) in Pyongyang, North Korea (DPRK), which employs over 1000 artists across the disciplines of painting, drawing, embroidery and mosaics. There is a rich cultural heritage associated with artistic production in North Korea (DPRK), and ink painting in particular is a revered practice. Artistic themes vary and may be revolutionary, social, political and historical in content, or purely aesthetic, and are expressed in different media such as sculpture, poster art, ceramics and painting. Installed in streets, schools, cinemas and official buildings, they function as a form of public art. These works are created with virtuosic technical skill by groups of artists, reflecting the states collective ethos.
This new body of work, created specifically for APT6, addresses the nature of work and collectivism, the process of collaboration and the fundamental role played by the studio in artistic practice in North Korea. This important project, developed in collaboration with Nicholas Bonner, will be the first presentation in Australia of contemporary art from North Korea (DPRK). Co-organised by Nicholas Bonner and Suhanya Raffel (Curatorial Manager, Asian and Pacific art, Queensland Art Gallery). Nicholas Bonner is a British-born filmmaker and landscape architect based in Beijing. He first visited North Korea (DPRK) in 1992 and soon after established Koryo Tours (with Josh Green), to organise trips to North Korea (DPRK) and promote cultural exchange.

The Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT) is QAGOMA's flagship international contemporary art event, and the only major exhibition series in the world to focus exclusively on the contemporary art of Asia, the Pacific and Australia.
APT6 included the work of more than 100 artists from 25 countries, including collaborations and collectives, which reflect the diversity of practices across Asia, the Pacific and Australia. APT6 has a number of specific focuses and thematic links while considering recent shifts in contemporary art in communities that have not been represented in the APT before, including works by artists from Tibet, North Korea (DPRK), Turkey and Iran, and from countries of the Mekong region such as Cambodia and Myanmar (Burma). APT6 acknowledged the innovation that exists in performance and music in Asia and the Pacific with the Pacific Reggae Project looking at the development of the musical genre in Hawai'i, the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, Vanuatu and New Zealand.
