Tobernalt, Holy Well, Sligo
Tobernalt Holy Well is a place of reflection and nurturing serenity. It predates the advent of Christianity to Ireland in the fifth century. Its importance as a meeting place and a sustainer of life predates our Celtic ancestors.
Tobernalt Holy Well is maintained by St. John's Parish, Carraroe, County Sligo, Ireland. If you would like more information on the Holy Well you can contact the Parish Office at +353-71-9162136 or e-mail carraroe@holywellsligo.com

The lovely Aine Chambers at tranquil Tobernalt The Holy Well, County Sligo. Tobernalt was a much more secluded and secret place during the Penal Days (1695-1829) in Ireland. The faithful and their priest, who would have had a price on his head, celebrated Mass there at great risk. Mass is still celebrated each year on Garland Sunday. Tobernalt is a great source of inspiration and tranquility.

The Holy Well of Tobernalt Sligo(1)
This well is reported to have been the place where St Patrick patron Saint of Ireland would have converted many followers to Christianity, the waters of the well was used in Baptism. On site, one can witness one of the local mass rocks which would have been used by Priests in Penal times where all Catholic religious practices were banned. Any Priest or lay person caught exercising their beliefs were severely punished. One thing that is brought out in this clip is the real beauty, serenity and peace of the place. This is where you can be one with nature. The birds are in great song and the weather is beautiful.

Sancreed Holy Well & Ancient Chapel
Sancreed Holy Well is down a path which is opposite to Sancreed church.
The well is Pagan and is from before Christianity was around. It got lost for hundreds of years under thickets until it was found by the vicar in the 19th century. Juliette Shanks, from Sancreed, looked after the well. She now has a plaque.
There is also a lot of ionizing radiation in the well. This is because of the granite. The water is also quite deep and is deeper than most holy wells.
People still come to the well sometimes to perform rituals. They will bath in the well and then pull of some of their shirt and hang it on the tree (but most of the bits of clothes on the tree are bought there by people who are just visiting).
Next to the well is a chapel. Inside the chapel there is a 15th century carved stone. The chapel is a small rectangle building that is ruined.
The Celtic Cross was put there in 1910.
