Utsunomiya Futarayama Shrine ( 宇都宮二荒山神社 )
Description
————————————————————————
Utsunomiya Futarayama Shrine is located on the top of Mt. Myojin in the center of Utsunomiya City. After being burned down several times, the shrine was reconstructed into his present form in 1877. Boasting an ancient history of about 1600 years, the shrine is closely tied to the lives of the residents through their prayers against misfortune and for academic success so many worshipers come to visit.

Honda Autonomous Driven car demonstration at the Honda R&D Center Tochigi, Japan
Acura has revealed its second generation automated development vehicle in California, a modified version of the RLX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD™ luxury performance sedan. The RLX has been fitted with a new suite of radar, Lidar, camera and GPS sensors, complemented by higher performance CPUs and GPUs, and improved cabling, heat management and circuitry. These enhancements have been combined with new, more intelligent software algorithms to support more complex testing scenarios.
The development vehicle is designed to achieve high reliability by fusing overlapping information together from various sensors. This concept, known as sensor fusion, allows test engineers to validate information from each signal with a higher degree of accuracy than can be obtained from any one of the sensors independently. For example, the vehicle's radar sensors are adept at detecting the relative position and velocity of off-board objects with pinpoint accuracy, while the camera system is best suited to help detect and identify objects based on size and shape. This same concept is applied in the AcuraWatch™ safety and driver-assistive suite available on all model year 2016 Acura sedans and SUVs.
The vehicle will be tested by Honda Research Institute USA at GoMentum Station, a 5,000-acre automated and connected vehicle proving ground in the San Francisco Bay Area. GoMentum Station contains 20-miles of paved, city-like roadway grids, buildings and other urban infrastructure, providing a realistic environment that will help accelerate the development of automated and connected vehicle technologies. This testing program is aligned with the company's goal to introduce automated driving technologies around 2020.

Winter in Nikko, Tochigi
Weekend getaway to Nikko, Tochigi - somewhere 2 hours train ride from Asakusa. Tokyo prefecture.
The trip was planned a week ahead but I have got my accommodation booked two weeks ahead, without really knowing what I could do in the two days.
It all started by boarding the second scheduled train from Tobu-Asakusa station. Had to get up really early to catch a train from Kamata (where I stayed). Got my quick on the go breakfast from konbini, and arrived 30 minutes early prior to departure. Since Tobu-Asakusa station is just next to the Sensoji temple - quickly ran to the other street and able to catch the view of Nakamise street without any crowds.
Took a upgraded train ticket with reserved seating for another 1100 yen so that I could have extra an hour to spend in Nikko itself - worth it I guess. After two hours of smooth ride on the latest Revaty Kegon train, there I am in Tochigi - Nikko. First impression - it is so cold and freezing already. Whipped out gloves and beanie straight way. Second impression - where is everyone. It is literary almost empty and only a few shops are opened. Anywhere 10 minutes from the train station are closed. Went to Kegon Falls and there is only me in the facility - private waterfall?
It is relatively easy to move around in Nikko as their bus lines are pretty much straightforward - unlike Fuji where you have different colours of bus heading to different locations. With the 4 days pass that includes return train ticket back to Asakusa, I can have unlimited bus ride in Nikko as well.
Got my first snow-hike-walk in Senjōgahara - basically a large flat land before a mountain. With the lack of people around and white wash landscape - it gives you this sense of serenity and calm in some way. Of course, they do encourage one to have a bell just in case of bear attacks. I don't have one obviously because, I never know there will be wild bears around. Day 1 ends with half frozen Lake Yuno.
Didn't try any of the shrine because it has become too tourist and it has been renovated so well that it doesn't retained its value anymore aye?
Started Day 2 late and with the extra 1 hour journey to Ryokyu Canyon. It is a forgotten place, even in most travel web that promotes Nikko - because it is really far and it is not covered in the Nikko Pass. The river wasn't that filled hence the view didn't turn out as magnificent as I would thought.
Hopped into the bus and get myself back to Lake Chuzenji again because weather was showing it is snowing up there and in fact it is. After half an hour of that, headed back to Tobu-Nikko station and back to Asakusa.
Nature-driven Places of Highlight in Nikko:
1. Kegon Falls
2. Lake Chūzen-ji
3. Senjogahara Marshland
4. Yumoto Foot Onsen
5. Lake Yuno
6. Ryokyu Canyon
7. Akechidaira Ropeway

Nikko, Japan | Things to do on your Tokyo Sidetrip to Nikko (Travel Guide)
Nikko is one of the more beautiful places we have visited in Japan. Famous for its heritage sites and breathtaking mountains, it is also known for the many onsens built around the hot springs that dot the area.
About a 2-hour train ride from Tokyo, Nikko is the perfect destination for travelers who want to see a more rural side of Japan.
Read More:
First Things First
We stayed at the Tobu Hotel Lavant Tokyo for a day before heading to Nikko.
The nicest part was waking up to an unobstructed view of the Tokyo Skytree which was pretty awesome.
The breakfast buffet was nice, with choices between Western and Japanese.
Visit the Skytree
Since it was so near, we went to check out the Tokyo Skytree, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks and tourist attractions. Reaching up to 634 metres (2,080 ft), the Skytree is the second tallest man-made structure in the world after the Burj Khalifa.
The tower is connected to Skytree Mall with shops and restaurants you can visit before heading up the tower.
There are two observatories, one at 350 m (1,150 ft) and the other at 450 m (1,480 ft). A glass covered skywalk, which gives visitors the most stunning view of Tokyo, encompasses a spiral walkway.
The best time to visit is right before sunset. You can watch the streets below come to life in a symphony of lights that is absolutely breathtaking.
Welcome to Nikko
The best way to get to Nikko is via train, which you can catch from Asakusa Station. The trip is around 2 hours.
If you want a bit of privacy, opt for a cabin. You can take in the rural scenery while making chitchat with your companions.
The Tobu Railway, which is the primary line in Nikko, stops at various destinations throughout the region.
Nikko is a rather large mountainous locality approximately 140 km north of Tokyo. Two large rivers pass directly through the city proper, and there are a number of falls and hot springs in the area.
Nikko is mostly known for its onsens that have been built around the various hot springs. Nature attractions and world heritage sites are also major draws for tourists.
The Japanese visit Nikko during holidays and weekends, especially during winter when the hot springs can be best enjoyed.
Toby World Square
When visiting Nikko, we recommend stopping by the Tobu World Square.
It’s a miniatures theme park with replications of various world landmarks and heritage sites. There is a close to ‘It’s a Small World After All’ feel about the park but without that dreaded theme song.
The miniatures are extremely detailed, and they look amazing! The trees are actual banzi’s that bring the installations to life.
There are a handful of restaurants at the park. We opted for the Japanese restaurant.
A delicious hot bowl of soba noodles to counter the chilling weather outside was the way to go plus a shot of hot sakê, of course.
Edo Wonderland
Probably the best part of our short stay in Nikko, Edo Wonderland is a breathing, living, Edo period village that gives guests the chance to experience life during the heyday of Shoguns and Samurai.
There are a number of activities and attractions to see, but the coolest thing is being able to rent Kimono’s to wear around the park. Prices vary depending on the class and style of the kimono, for instance, a Shogun’s Kimino will cost more than that of a Samurai or Commoner. The staff also address and respond to you based on your attire, which helps you immerse in the experience.
Me failing horribly at trying to play the Shamisen, a traditional Japanese 3-string instrument.
Kamakura Snow Festival
From December to March, Nikko receives snowfall. What takes place during this time of the year is a local festival known as the Yunishigawa Kamakura Festivial where many of the establishments use the freshly fallen snow to build Kamakura. This is a type of igloo or snow house where guests can hangout, take pictures and even enjoy local snacks.
Make sure you visit the festival during day time. The various shops and cafes are closed in the evening.
Time to Relax
Nikko is most famous for its mountainside onsens and spas. There are a number of hotels in the area which cater to visitors who come to Nikko to experience the hot springs during winter.
We checked in to Hana To Hana, one of the better known onsens in the area. The staff were all friendly; and the food, exceptional even by Japanese standards.
The rooms are traditional Japanese style. Ours had a fantastic view of the river from the window.
There are two onsens in the hotel—a stone one which, unfortunately, we were unable to shoot due to guest and hotel regulations and another smaller wood-style one (pictured above), which they were kind enough to let us take a picture of.
Breakfast and dinner are included with your stay at Hana To Hana which is a plus. To be honest, the Yakiniku style dinner was the best meal we’ve ever had in Japan.
Chuzen-ji (Tachiki Kannon 立木観音) Temple, Near Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan
坂東巡礼 第18番 中禅寺 立木観音
Chuzen-ji Temple is located near Chuzenji-ko (Chuzenji Lake), about 3000 feet above sea level. Chuzenji Lake is about an hour bus ride up the mountain from Nikko bus stop.
Nikko UNESCO World Heritage Site, contains many great sites in one single area. Foreign visitors usually only see these temples and neglect to go to Chuzenji Lake. Chuzenji Lake and the water falls there are one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. Specifically the fact that the lake is formed between mountains at 3000 feet above sea level. If you go to Nikko, you can cover both the Nikko temples and Chuzenji Lake. See the Nikko temples during the morning and go to Chuzenji Lake in the evening.
Many foreign embassies that are in Tokyo have guest houses for their Ambassadors near Chuzenji Lake.
Chuzen-ji Temple's main deity is Tachiki Kannon. You can see this beautiful Kannon statue in the Hondo (no photos allowed). Story has it that it was carved using a single Katsura tree hundreds of years ago.
First floor of the temple, provides great views of the mountains and the Chuzenji Lake.

Travelogue in Japan, Utsunomiya & back home, volume 56
The capital of Tochigi Prefecture, Utsunomiya City (Utsunomiya-shi/宇都宮市) is located 100 kilometers north of Tokyo and is easily accessed by bullet train or highway. The cultural, political and economic center of the prefecture is home to about 440,000 people. Within the city, Romantic Mura features a local brewery where you can enjoy a beer, and a hot spring.
Utsunomiya Castle Ruins Park (Utunomiya Jyoshi Koen)
Utsunomiya Castle Ruins Park is the site of the former Utsunomiya Castle and currently a city rest area. The majority of the Utsunomiya Castle building was burnt down during the Boshin War. During the Edo Period, it was an important point for the northern Kanto area that included the Tohoku region and Nikko. Utsunomiya Castle, which once boasted of magnificence, is now a ruin castle park, an oasis in the city that is cherished by the local citizens. Utsunomiya Castle is named as one of the Seven Great Kanto Castles and is famous as the place where the shogun stayed when he visited Nikko. Most of Utsunomiya Castle was burned down during the Boshin war. The current reconstructions were completed in 2007. The site is host to approximately 120 cherry trees of 4 different varieties which bloom at different times allowing visitors to enjoy a longer than normal cherry blossom season.
