As west-coast as it gets, Tofino Surfing is something you have to experience when planning to visit British Columbia, Canada. We spent a weekend on Vancouver Island in Canada's surf capital Tofino taking in the ocean, mountains, and everything this majestic seaside town has to offer.

Canadian Surfing -- Tofino, British Columbia
Little do most people know, Canada has a thriving surf scene. In the frigid Pacific waters on the country's west coast, the small community of Tofino's surf culture thrives year round.
While we Canadians are known to love the outdoors, even I was intrigued to learn more about this town's cold water surfing pastime. To better understand the local surf culture, I spoke with a number of local surfers.
Tofino is located on the coastline that also happens to be a protected rainforest. Yes, a rainforest in Canada. It doesn't snow in this part of Canada, contrary to the international stereotype of the whole country as the Great White North... Instead, on this mild Pacific coastline, it rains. And rains. And rains... Yearly rainfall in Tofino is around 130 inches. But through it all, rain or shine, clad in warm wetsuits, locals love to surf!

Tofino, British Columbia is home to some of the world’s most beautiful wildlife and has become a coveted destination for tourists.
If you’re lucky enough to get a camping spot during the busy summer season, we recommend staying at Bella Pacifica (although there are lots of great choices nearby).
Having heard of an abandoned airplane crash not far from town, we decided to check it out and found quite a course to get to the spot. Although it was marked, the trail was mostly made up of deep mud and so we resigned to the fact we would be getting a bit dirty.
We couldn’t come to Tofino without surfing, even if it mostly means just splashing around in the waves.
The sunsets in Tofino are some of the best and we eneded our nights there huddled around the campfire, telling ghost stories and eating smores because... yum.

SIGHTSEEING IN TOFINO, BC | CANADA'S SURFING DESTINATION | LOVE, ALEXA
We finally made it Tofino, British Columbia's best surfing destination on the west coast of Vancouver Island. We were surprised at the number of surfers on the beach, riding the GIANT waves, even though it's still winter. In this video, you'll see our visit to Hot Springs Cove, just a short boat ride from Tofino, as well as our cabin on Chesterman Beach, thanks to Stay Tofino. Aussie Surfer Instructor - Tofino, British Columbia
For any Canadian surfer who really enjoys catching waves and the chilled out vibe that goes along with the surf culture, then a trip to Tofino, on the west coast of Vancouver Island, is the ultimate pilgrimage in Canadian surfing! It's the spot to surf in Canada, and as the sport continues to grow in popularity around the world Tofino is showing up more and more on international surfer's radars. And no wonder, surrounded by temperate rainforests, sandy beaches and the quintessential chilled out little surf town Tofino is becoming a Mecca for all surfers world wide!
After surfing earlier in the trip on St Lawrence River in downtown Montreal ( the GCAT crew couldn't wait to get into the salt water for a surf in the real waves of the Pacific Ocean (the St. Lawrence had a very unique and rare stationary river wave that never broke!). The GCAT crew teamed up with the pretty and talented Hannah from the Pacific Surf School who took us to Chesterman's Beach for the afternoon.
The Pacific Surf School is a friendly, affordable and safe place to take lessons, rent boards or get information on the local surf scene. Being in the surf business in Tofino since 1998, the Pacific Surf School offers the most comprehensive and fun surf lessons on the coast for all ages from beginner to advanced. They have a large staff of friendly, experienced surf instructors who can walk you through the whole process of catching a wave; right from how to put on your 'wettie' to the proper way to look cool holding your board!
After getting suited up and hitting the beach Chris and I spent several hours 'out back' catching some perfect little waves. We got right into it having surfed many times before but Stephanie needed a bit more time on the 'little waves' near shore. Being her first time ever on a board she showed great enthusiasm as she repeatedly got 'dumped' but kept climbing back up on her board to give it another try! That's our girl!
By the end of the day we were all exhausted but stoked. With the intense natural beauty of Tofino, the great quality of waves and the friendly atmosphere we understood why Tofino is such legendary surf spot. But surfer or not, there are a ton of other things to do in Tofino as well including cultural adventures, bear and wolf watching tours, heli-tours, camping, great dining, pampering spas, etc so if your friends surf and you don't make sure you make the trip too! It's a legendary place for more than just surfing. But, the surfing is damn good!

We stopped at South beach, chesterman beach, cox bay, and all around clayoquot sound by boat. We also experienced a sea plane with atleo air taking us over Tofino! Surfing in Tofino - British Columbia, Canada
While exploring the west coast of Canada, we felt it wouldn’t be complete without making a pit stop in the legendary surf town of Tofino. We hopped on the ferry to Vancouver Island, met up with our friend Stu (and his van), grabbed some surf gear and setup camp at Wickaninnish Beach. Doing our best to fit in to the surf culture and with the surfer dudes/dudettes, we took in the waves and beautiful scenery. Can’t wait to go back!

Camping along the Trans-Canada from Sooke to Naniamo up to Port Alberni and our last destination Tofino! We staying at the Living Forrest campground, China Creek and back to our Cabin in Sooke.
The beaches we went to were stunning some ranging up to 16k long!
What an adventure, Christine & I took a long overdue road trip to Vancouver island. We ended up driving over 5000 kilometres stayed in 4 different camp sites, one private cabin and saw over 11 beaches through the Pacific Rim Park. An adventure to remember and captured in this video.
