東福寺 境内 Tofuku-ji Temple
臨済宗東福寺派の本山。摂政九條道家が聖一国師を開山として菩提寺建立を発願、1236（嘉禎２）年４月２日（鎌倉時代）より19年の歳月をかけて1255年（建長７）に七堂伽藍を完成した。京都五山の一つ。「東福の伽藍面（がらんづら）」とまでいわれ壮観を極めたのが、度重なる兵火と1881年（明治14）の失火で仏殿、法堂、庫裏などを焼失、以後、逐次再建してきた。禅宗伽藍を代表する室町最古の三門（国宝）をはじめ、浴室、東司（便所）禅堂（いずれも重文）など室町時代の禅僧の生活を知る上で貴重な建築が残る。境内の通天橋は紅葉の名所。方丈の周囲に枯山水の庭園をめぐらせる。絹本着色無準師範像（国宝）など5000点を超える文化財を所蔵。
龍吟庵国宝方丈は現存最古の方丈建築。

東福寺 方丈 本堂庭園
明治23年（1890年）の再建。正面前庭にある唐門は明治42年（1909年）に造営され、昭憲皇太后より下賜されたものである。庭園は近代の造園家、重森三玲によって昭和13年（1938年）に作庭され、方丈を囲んで四方に配される。釈迦成道を表現し、八相の庭と命名されている。鎌倉期庭園の質実剛健な風格を基本とし、これに近代芸術の抽象的構成をとり入れた枯山水庭園である。
南庭 - 荒海の砂紋の中に蓬莱、方丈、瀛洲、壺梁の四仙島を表現した配石で、右方には五山が築山として表現されている。
北庭 - 南の恩賜門内にあった敷石を利用し、石と苔を幾何学的な市松模様に配している。
西庭 - さつきの刈込みと砂地が大きく市松模様に入り、くず石を方形に組んで井田を意図している。
東庭 - 東司の柱石の余材を利用して北斗七星を構成し、雲文様の地割に配している。
This temple is the head temple of the Tofukuji School of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism. It was built in 1236 on the instructions of Kujo Michiie, the great statesman of the Kamakura period, who desired to build in Kyoto a temple complexes in Nara. Even its name, Tofukuji, is a combination of one chalacter from the names of each of these Nara temples.
Its original buildings were burned but were rebuilt in the 15th century according to the original plans. About this time it flourished as one of the Five Great Temples of Kyoto. Its many compounds and sub-temples survived the ravages of war and fire until the late Meiji period when the Butsuden (Buddha hall) were burned. However, it even now retains the magnificent scale characteristic of a medieval Zen temple.
Tofuku-ji Temple Honbo garden (designated as a National Site of Scenic Beauty)
The Hojo, which is one of main building in the Tofukuji Temple founded in 1235, was reconstructed in 1890, and the gardens arranged at the four quarters around the building of Hojo were laid out in 1939 by Mr. Mirei Shigemori (a famous garden-builder), who intended to express the simplicity of Zen in the Kamakura period with the abstract construction of modern arts.

Since then he has had his sights on carrying on the Japanese culture and decided to be apprenticed to Kato Manseien in Bonsai cho, Saitama city, Japan. Masashi studied under Saburo Kato and his words to him “Be the one to spread out the great Japanese Bonsai not only in Japan but also overseas” made Masashi expanded the range of his activities.
Masashi has been performing bonsai and providing its demonstration workshops.in various countries. He was appointed as Japan Cultural Envoy by the Agency for Cultural Affairs in 2013 and traveled to 11 countries in 4 months to introduce the aesthetic value of bonsai that is a culture endemic to Japan. He’s also succeeded in exchanging culture by introducing how to enjoy bonsai while traveling.
He has given lectures to Bhutan's King, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, as well as to Abe Akie, the wife of Prime Minister Abe Shinzo, he is one of the bonsai artists that have attracted attention in the world.

Toji / Byodo in 醍醐寺 / 平等院
Toji -Buddhism Shingon- was founded as the city's guardian temple in the year 794, the same year in which Kyoto became Japan's new capital. It is well known for its five storied pagoda, Japan's tallest with a height of 57 meters. On the 21st of each month, a lively flea market is held around Toji.
Byōdō-in is a Buddhist temple in the city of Uji in Kyoto Prefecture, It is a temple of the Jodo Shu (Pure Land) and Tendai sects. It was built in 998 -Heian period- by Fujiwara no Michinaga. This temple appears in ten yens coin.
