The Togakure Ninpo Museum (Togakure-ryū Ninpō Shiryōkan) is devoted to the local Togakure school of ninja. In the 12th century, a warrior from Nagano fled to Iga after fighting on the losing side of a war between the Minamoto and Taira clans. Iga was the traditional bedrock of the ninja, and the warrior learnt his ninja skills there before coming back to Nagano and starting his own ninja school.
The museum is located in the forested mountains about an hour by bus northwest of Nagano's city center, just across the entrance to the Upper Togakushi Shrine. The museum consists of multiple buildings, one of which exhibits tools and weapons used by Togakure Ninja and displays many interesting photos of them practising various techniques in warfare and infiltration. The museum also contains a Ninja House, a building which appears just ordinary when looked from outside but is constructed with many secret doors, passages and contraptions on the inside. It is great fun to find the way through the excellently designed maze in the house. There is also a throwing star (shuriken) throwing range, where for a small fee visitors can experience throwing shuriken at target boards.
Within the same compound stands also the Museum of Togakushi Folklore, which showcases tools, clothing, receptacles and furniture used by people who lived in the area in the past.
Access info.
Take bus number 70 or 71 from Nagano Station in direction of Togakushi. Alight at Togakushi-Okushairiguchi bus stop (戸隠奥社入口, 65 minutes, 1350 yen one way, 1 bus/hour), which is located just next to the museum.
In addition, the Togakushi Kogen Free Kippu travel ticket is available for 2600 yen and includes a) a round trip between central Nagano and the Togakushi area, b) free use of buses within Togakushi, and c) one additional bus ride between Nagano Station and Zenkoji. The Togakushi Kogen Free Kippu can be used over a period of up to five consecutive calendar days. Hours: 9:00 to 17:00 (entry until 16:30)
Closed: Mid November to mid April
Admission: 500 yen

Togakushi Moving Ninja house - Nagano Prefecture, Japan
忍者, Ninja, whose kanji reading means one who is concealed, can also be read as Shinobi, which is usually what is referred to in Japan and in relation to the late 80s Sega Genesis game.

Togakure vs Togakushi- which means what?
This is video response to some guy who named himself Matatron (sounds like he should be running the Power Rangers.) He obviously can't speak Japanese, but that didn't stop him from talking about it. I am trying to clean up his mess with this video.

Hiking to Togakushi Shrine in Winter | Vlog #15
Should you visit Nagano's Togakushi Shrine in winter? When it's snowing?
Probably not.
But does Muki ever care?
Not really.
Where is Togakushi Shrine? About an hour from Nagano, Japan by bus. Get there by taking bus 70 from Nagano station, bus stand 7, and getting off at the middle shrine (Chusha, 戸隠中社) and hiking up, or directly to the upper shrine entrance (Okusha, 戸隠奥社入口).
It is not a smart idea to go during the thick of winter, and most helpful Japanese people will tell you not to. But I'm not very smart, and this was at the end of winter.

Day 20: Kōka Ninja Village and Museum
On my 20th day in Japan, my family and I visited Kōka in Shiga Prefecture. During our stay, we visited the Kōka ninja village which is where the Kōka ninja house and museum is located. It is situated in a rural area and it was extremely hot and humid. Kōka seemed very authentic and I felt that I had more of a connection to historical ninjutsu there.

Japan Travel: Togakushi Shrine feel spritual energy, Nagano31 Moopon
Togakushi Shrine ( Togakushi Jinja) consists of a lower, a middle and an upper shrine in the woody mountains northwest of Nagano's city center. The shrines are related to an important story in Japanese mythology in which the Sun Goddess hid herself in a cave in present day Takachiho in Kyushu after her brother had misbehaved, as a result, bringing darkness to the world.
In order to get the sunlight back, the other deities tried to coax the Sun Goddess out of the cave by performing spectacular dance performances in front of it. As the Sun Goddess took a peek out, one of the deities grabbed the cave's stone door and threw it away not to allow her to hide again. The stone door flew all the way to Togakushi in Nagano Prefecture, which is also how the area got its name: Togakushi literally means hiding door.
Today, the upper shrine worships the deity who grabbed and threw away the stone door, while the middle shrine enshrines the deity who performed the dance in front of the cave. The shrines of Togakushi are connected both by roads and hiking trails up the mountain's forested slopes. Visitors would first arrive at the torii gate of the lower shrine, from which is a long flight of stairs leading up to its praying hall. A two kilometer ascent from here takes you to the middle shrine, which stands at the top of a small town of shops and restaurants. The shrine features a praying hall with nice architecture, a small waterfall, and sacred trees which are over 800 years old.
The entrance to the upper shrine is another two kilometers uphill from the middle shrine. From the parking lot and bus stop starts the two kilometer long approach to the shrine, which is lined by over 300 tall cryptomeria trees, passes the thatched-roof Zuishinmon Gate along the way, and ends with a series of stone steps. The shrine's main hall spectacularly stands in the steep mountainside of Mount Togakushi with the mountain peaks towering above.
An alternative trail to the upper shrine leads via Kagamiike (Mirror Pond), a serene pond which reflects the surrounding mountain landscape nicely. Note also that the Togakure Ninpo Museum is situated right next to the entrance to the upper shrine, while the Kids Ninja Village is close in the vicinity of the middle shrine, making interesting additions to the shrine visits.
Access info.
Take bus number 70 or 71 from Nagano Station in direction of Togakushi. Alight at Togakushi-Hokosha for the lower shrine (戸隠宝光社, 50 minutes, 1150 yen one way), Togakushi-Chusha for the middle shrine (戸隠中社, 60 minutes, 1250 yen one way) or Togakushi-Okushairiguchi for the upper shrine (戸隠奥社入口, 65 minutes, 1350 yen one way). There is roughly one bus per hour. Take advantage of a discounted round trip tickets between Nagano and Togakushi-Hokosha (2100 yen) and between Nagano and Togakushi-Chusha (2250 yen).
In addition, the Togakushi Kogen Free Kippu travel ticket is available for 2600 yen and includes a) a round trip between central Nagano and the Togakushi area, b) free use of buses within Togakushi, and c) one additional bus ride between Nagano Station and Zenkoji.
