Nagano Togakushi Shrine - 戸隠神社 - 4K Ultra HD
Nagano Togakushi Shrine - 戸隠神社 - 4K Ultra HD Today’s video will be a little special since it is actually the first video in a series of three. Indeed the famous shrine (jinja) Togakushi in Nagano is spread across three main locations with each place hosting respectively, the main shrine the Togakushi-Chūsha (中社), the Togakushi-Hōkōsha (宝光社) and the Togakushi-Okusha (奥社). There are actually 2 more smaller shrines (the Hino-miko-sha and the Kuzuryu-sha is God) but they are not as majestic as the other ones and only matter in a purely spiritual way.
The three shrines are in fact separated, a distance of about 2km between each other, and are all located in the Togakushi village at the base of the Mount Togakushi (1,904m) in Nagano prefecture.
According to the legend, these shrines histories started in 210 B.C. but it is only in 684 that a temporary building was erected and we had to wait until 849 for the first monks to come and live there.
The shrines are related to an important story in Japanese mythology in which the Sun Goddess hid herself in a cave in Kyushu after her brother had misbehaved by bringing darkness to the world.
In order to get the sunlight back, the other divinities tried to lure the Sun Goddess out of the cave by performing gorgeous dance performances in front of her cave. As the Sun Goddess start to took a peek out, one of the divinities grabbed the cave's stone door and threw it away to prevent her from hiding again. The stone door flew all the way to Togakushi in Nagano, which is also how the area got its name: Togakushi (戸隠) stands for hiding door.
Now you have the back story, today’s video will concentrate on the main shrine, the Togakushi-Chūsha (中社), while the next two will cover the Togakushi-Hōkōsha (宝光社) and the Togakushi-Okusha (奥社).

Japan Trip: Togakushi Shrine sacred mystic destination , Japan Nagano No.031
Togakushi Shrine ( Togakushi Jinja) consists of a lower, a middle and an upper shrine in the woody mountains northwest of Nagano's city center. The shrines are related to an important story in Japanese mythology in which the Sun Goddess hid herself in a cave in present day Takachiho in Kyushu after her brother had misbehaved, as a result, bringing darkness to the world.
In order to get the sunlight back, the other deities tried to coax the Sun Goddess out of the cave by performing spectacular dance performances in front of it. As the Sun Goddess took a peek out, one of the deities grabbed the cave's stone door and threw it away not to allow her to hide again. The stone door flew all the way to Togakushi in Nagano Prefecture, which is also how the area got its name: Togakushi literally means hiding door.
Today, the upper shrine worships the deity who grabbed and threw away the stone door, while the middle shrine enshrines the deity who performed the dance in front of the cave. The shrines of Togakushi are connected both by roads and hiking trails up the mountain's forested slopes. Visitors would first arrive at the torii gate of the lower shrine, from which is a long flight of stairs leading up to its praying hall. A two kilometer ascent from here takes you to the middle shrine, which stands at the top of a small town of shops and restaurants. The shrine features a praying hall with nice architecture, a small waterfall, and sacred trees which are over 800 years old.
The entrance to the upper shrine is another two kilometers uphill from the middle shrine. From the parking lot and bus stop starts the two kilometer long approach to the shrine, which is lined by over 300 tall cryptomeria trees, passes the thatched-roof Zuishinmon Gate along the way, and ends with a series of stone steps. The shrine's main hall spectacularly stands in the steep mountainside of Mount Togakushi with the mountain peaks towering above.
An alternative trail to the upper shrine leads via Kagamiike (Mirror Pond), a serene pond which reflects the surrounding mountain landscape nicely. Note also that the Togakure Ninpo Museum is situated right next to the entrance to the upper shrine, while the Kids Ninja Village is close in the vicinity of the middle shrine, making interesting additions to the shrine visits.

Hiking to Togakushi Shrine in Winter | Vlog #15
Should you visit Nagano's Togakushi Shrine in winter? When it's snowing?
Probably not.
But does Muki ever care?
Not really.
Where is Togakushi Shrine? About an hour from Nagano, Japan by bus. Get there by taking bus 70 from Nagano station, bus stand 7, and getting off at the middle shrine (Chusha, 戸隠中社) and hiking up, or directly to the upper shrine entrance (Okusha, 戸隠奥社入口).
It is not a smart idea to go during the thick of winter, and most helpful Japanese people will tell you not to. But I'm not very smart, and this was at the end of winter.

Wisata Jepang : Kuil Togakushi Merasakan Energi Spiritual, Jepang Nagano No.031

31 Moopon
