Japan Off The Beaten Path is a new series on my channel, where I show you more of the unknown areas/prefectures in Japan and encourage you to travel and visit areas other than the common places such as Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.
In this first episode, we visit and explore around Akita Prefecture in the Tohoku region of northern Honshu, the main island of Japan.
I came here during Autumn(end of October), which is the perfect time to come to see the autumn foliage!

As for transportation, it takes 4 hours to get from Tokyo station to Akita station via the Akita Komachi Bullet Train.
It costs around ¥17,000($160 USD) however if you have the JR pass you just have to pay the small fee of the reserved seat on the Shinkansen(all seats are reserved).
Or if you are going up to Hokkaido or coming back down from Hokkaido, you can change at the Shin-Aomori station and take the local JR train down to Odate station.
Going back to Tokyo from Shin-Aomori station is also possible by taking the Hayabusa bullet train. (Around ¥17,000)
Even though Akita is in Japan, each prefecture is so unique in it's own way - I learned so much from this trip and could see a different side of Japan.. I hope to share this kind of Japan more and more with you through my channel :)

Akira: Tetsuo's End, The Mutation (1080p)

Akira is a 1988 Japanese adult animated science fiction film directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, produced by Ryōhei Suzuki and Shunzō Katō, and written by Otomo and Izo Hashimoto, based on Otomo's manga of the same name.
Set in a dystopian, cyberpunk-themed 2019, Akira tells the story of Shōtarō Kaneda, a leader of a local bikergang whose childhood friend, Tetsuo Shima, acquires incredible powers after a motorcycle accident, eventually threatening an entire military complex amidst chaos and rebellion in the sprawling futuristic metropolis of Neo-Tokyo. While most of the character designs and settings were adapted from the manga, the plot differs considerably and removes much of the last half of Akira.
Akira was released on July 16, 1988 by Toho. It garnered a large cult following since its theatrical release and is widely considered to be a landmark in Japanese animation. It is considered by many critics to be one of the greatest animated and science fiction films of all time.

Frankenstein Conquers the World - English Version Visuals
Note: I did not include the Toho-lensed shots of Frankenstein that were added by AIP to the film's U.S. release.

Frankenstein Conquers the World was co-financed by Toho and Henry G. Saperstein, a producer for UPA Productions of America. After the films Japanese release, Saperstein, who controlled the North American rights, licensed the film to American International Pictures, which then prepared an English version for theatrical release in 1966.
In the late '70s or very early '80s, Saperstein regained the rights to the film. As was the case with his other Toho titles at that time, the AI-TV version was mostly removed from circulation and a new transfer (from 35mm elements) was prepared for release. Saperstein's editors went back to the original textless elements to create a new opening credits sequence (I suspect to remove references to AIP). This UPA telecine omits a number of the English visuals seen here. It's not exactly known why this happened. My best guess is that the telecine editor omitted all of the optical text that wouldn't fit in a cropped 4:3 frame. Indeed, watch the UPA telecine and you'll find that none of the remaining English opticals are squeezed or letterboxed.
Anyway, this UPA version of the film naturally runs shorter than the original American International edit. It's not known to me if Saperstein's elements were significantly damaged or if the telecine operator did a poor job, but quite a few lines had been spliced out in this version as well. In my opinion, this transfer is a disaster. Unfortunately, it would be seen on television through the '80s and '90s, even playing on AMC in the first half of the 2000s. It would also seem to be the basis for all official releases in the 21st century.
For example:
An HD transfer of the English version was prepared for or by MonstersHD in the early 2000s and was later released by Toho in a special DVD box set also featuring Rodan and The War of the Gargantuas. This transfer restores the AIP opening credits and the August 6th, 1945, 15 Years Later, Akita Oil Fields, and Osaka opticals that had been cut from the earlier UPA telecine. However, this new transfer was now missing the English newspaper insert and the violent Frankenstein shots that had been present in all previous English releases. The English version on the Media Blasters DVD, released in 2007, is based on this MonstersHD scan, although all the English opticals besides the main title and opening credits were digitally recreated.

Hatsune Miku? What?
Hatsune Miku (hah-TSOO-neh MEE-koo) is the most popular Japanese character in VOCALOID, a voice-synthesizing program in which artificial singing can be generated. She is the blue-green-haired girl singing the main vocals in this particular song. Accompanying her are Kasane Teto (kah-SAH-neh TEH-toh) and Akita Neru (ah-KEE-tah NEH-roo). Teto, the one with pink-red hair, comes from a freeware spin-off version of VOCALOID, called UTAU. Neru, the teen with yellow hair and the cellphone, is just a fan-made character—originally designed to be a troll—that has gotten popular.
So, umm... What's this song about anyway?
Miku gets so lured into her little world on the computer that she'll fall asleep at the monitor. She wakes up realizing she has no life. It's hard for her when the internet is so amazing, like an unknown world she has to explore. Miku's so obsessed with the computer she doesn't have enough time for laughing, crying, being angry, etc. The rest just explains how she has given up on everything, nothing matters, and her life sucks. Oh yeah, and she calls herself stupid a few times.
Can I find anymore songs like this?
Tons. If you search Hatsune Miku on YouTube, songs in which various composers used this voice will appear. Also, there are more VOCALOIDs than just Miku. If you are interested, I suggest Googling VOCALOID to learn about them.
What does baka mean?
Baka is an insult word for someone with low-intelligence. Though it is most commonly translated as stupid, idiot, or fool, it can be anything from a very rude meaning, like dumbass, to a more innocent meaning, like silly, depending on context and tone.
What are those two weird symbols in the title of this video? (驫麤)
These two kanji together basically mean baka baka baka. The first one is made by three of 馬 (ba), while the second is three of 鹿 (ka). In other words, triple baka. Thanks to orangebhuddy29 for clearing that up.
What the heck is tetopettenson?
It's a Japanese song using nonsense words, and tetopettenson doesn't actually have any meaning. This is just where Kasane Teto got her name from. If you're curios, search テトペッテンソン on YouTube.

Legend of Dinosaurs & Monster Birds (1977)
A young woman wanders barefoot in the lush Aokigahara (青木ヶ原), also known as the Sea of Trees (樹海 Jukai) region of Mt. Fuji, and suddenly falls into an underground cavern, awakening in an icy cave full of large eggs. When one of the eggs start to hatch, she goes into hysterics and flees until she is discovered by a construction crew. Before falling into a coma, the girl babbles about what she saw to a reporter. Her story airs on a televised news report that is seen by geologist Takashi Ashizawa. Upon hearing about the fossilized egg, Takashi sets off to Mt. Fuji to find it. When he arrives at the small village bordering Fuji's Saiko Lake, Takashi immediately heads into the heavily forested Jukai when a sudden earthquake occurs and he is knocked out. He later awakens in his father's old cabin near Saiko Lake, and discovers that he was rescued by Shohei Muku, an old friend of the family. Takashi quickly gets back to fossil-hunting and heads toward the Jukai once again. As he cruises through the nearby village, he greets two women named Akiko, a former lover of his, and Junko.
Meanwhile, other bizarre things start happening around the Saiko Lake community. A young couple in a paddle boat disappear without a trace, an injured diver is pulled from the lake and livestock begin to mysteriously vanish. Takashi begins developing a theory that a dinosaur is alive and well in Saiko Lake. His theory gains credence when Junko stumbles upon a headless horse-corpse lying in the road, and Takashi later finds it lodged in a tree while taking photographs of some strange tracks in the mud. The following day, Takashi sits in his father's cabin and develops a possible theory as to what type of creature could have killed the horse and placed the remains in a tree for safekeeping. He decides that the creature must be a living Plesiosaurus and shares his minimal proof and hypothesis with a very sceptical Shohei. His theory proves correct when a Plesiosaurus really does appear and devours some local pranksters during a festival outside. The creature continues to subtly terrorise the community and devours two more women, including Junko, whose death is witnessed by Akiko and their pet dog. Takashi and Akiko soon discover the presence of another prehistoric beast, a Rhamphorhynchus, which also proceeds to terrorize the community. Eventually, the two prehistoric beasts come face-to-face, with the Plesiosaurus eventually gaining the upper hand against the Rhamphorhynchus, despite losing an eye. Mt. Fuji then finally erupts, sending the reptiles into a fiery chasm below as the ground gives way. Akiko almost falls to her death, before Takashi is able to grab her by the hand. The film then ends, leaving the two protagonists' fates ambiguous.

Suio Ryu Iai Kenpo started with Mima Yoichizaemon Kagenobu in a country in war.
Born in 1577 in the province of Dewa no Kuni (present prefecture of Yamagata and Akita), he learned the handling of weapons with his father from childhood, and swore an oath to restore that style. During the day, he was training Batto Gekiken sword techniques in front of a sacred tree, and during the night he was meditating in a temple, completely devoted to his task.
While he was doing his day to day study, one night, during his meditation at the temple, he saw the shape of a white seagull floating on the water (“Suio”) and suddenly had a revelation that lead him finally to the illumination.
This school of martial techniques includes Iai as well as sword fighting techniques, Wakizashi, Naginata, Jo, with the traditional armor.
Even after his revelation, he travelled the country to perfect his art. Besides his martial skills, he did not neglect his spiritual study of Shinto. Even when he was fighting against other sword fighters from all places, he was not seeking to win vainly, but on the contrary he was always trying to give them the opportunity of victory by expressing “Aiuchi”, the simultaneous strike.
The ninth representative of the school, Fukuhara Shinzaemon, added techniques from the Kusarigama school of Masaki Ryu.
In 1665, after Kagenobu’s passing, one of his children, Mima Yohachiro Kagenaga, herited the style. Nowadays, the 15th Soke Katase Yoshimitsu Sensei, continues this heritage.
