Saving Tokai Forest
The felling of pine trees in Cape Town's Lower Tokai Forest began on the morning of 30th August 2016. Residents arrived to discover the entrances to the forest cordoned off and warning signs to stay out of the forest posted to the fence.
Angry residents claim the proper public consultation process was not followed by South African National Parks (SANParks).
The area in question is a pine plantation, the crop is owned by Mountain to Ocean (MTO) who lease the land from SANParks.
On the evening of the 30th August, with the help from local DA ward councillor, Penny East, Law Enforcement were called to stop the night time tree felling operation as it contravened City of Cape Town bylaws.
Despite instructions from Law Enforcement officers the tree felling continued until approximately 1am when Law Enforcement again instructed the operation to stop.
Parkscape, a community based organisation, started a legal process, with funds raised from the community, to stop the tree felling and on 31 August were successful in reaching an agreement with MTO to cease operation in the area concerned for 7 days.
The community's battle to save Tokai Forest has just begun.

In 2015, our beloved Tokai was hit by a devastating forest fire that resulted in trail closures for close on two years.
After multiple donations and a phenomenal team effort from Tokai MTB Mountainbike Central, volunteers, trail builders and riders alike, the trusted trails of Tokai were reborn some 20 months later!
Fast forward to 2018 and the trails couldn't be running better. With mid-week access, optimal flow and several lines catering for mutliple riding disciplines, Tokai is once again the go-to trail network for those living in and around Cape Town's CBD.
With such a vast network of trails right on our doorstep, it's no wonder why Tokai is the #ALLRIDEZA crew's local playground. To celebrate this, we set out on our usual weekend route except this time, we're taking you along for the ride. Gear up folks because it's time to go Trail Trippin'!

Time to take you down Tokai's All Mountain & DH trails. These are THE most fun trails for me on the mountain.
The lower DH trails are new to me, I did take a quick spot ride to check out how the Kenevo rides but that trail real needs some sessioning to get the jumps right.
After ride drinks and foods are available at the local shopping centre located only around 1km down the road from the trail head.

The trails at Tokai Forest have had a major work-over with some new lines and great features added to existing lines...so much so that it's worth shuttling along the main road to drop in at the top gate at Silvermine to run as many trails as you can, back down to the bottom gate....rinse and repeat as much as your body can handle!

The faster you go the more tech it becomes! We love the flow of the Mamba trail and with all the recent work done, it is riding incredibly well!
The re-introduction of RinkhalsTrail now means that this is a full single track ride of close on 4 minutes. If you ride the trail from the top (Cobra), it will be a 5 min run at least! What a flippen jol!
Remember, funding for these trails is driven by membership of Tokai MTB Club. It's only going to set you back R400 for the year which is incredible value!
