Traveling on a Dime - Tokamachi Snow Festival
View the Playlist of all the Traveling on a Dime Episodes at:
The city of Sapporo in Hokkaido Japan plays host to the largest and most famous snow festival every year. And while it's an amazing adventure, getting there is expensive, times consuming, or both. Fortunately for everyone on mainland Japan, and especially those people living and traveling in Niigata, there is a Traveling on a Dime alternative!
When the town of Tokamachi got the bright idea in 1950 to make the ridiculous amount of snow the town gets every winter into a source of fun and a tourist attraction instead of a nuisance, the Tokamachi Snow Festival was born. It started out small, but today pulls in artists, performers and tourists from all over Japan. It's also older than the Sapporo International Snow Festival by nearly 20 years.
Even with snow dumping down from the sky, the snow sculptures, live music and dance performances, food stalls, nagashi soba (just watch the video), tea ceremonies, and locally produced food and sake (some of it free) make for a great way to spend a winter's day outdoors. Got out of your apartment lately?
Bryan is an expat English teacher, published writer and aspiring producer living in Niigata Japan. When he isn't writing articles for Japanese publications in English, he likes to spend his modest earnings to find inexpensive ways to travel and experience Japan.
Traveling on a Dime is a periodic show of Bryan's adventures in one of the most expensive countries in the world. As he says, It doesn't have to be expensive, and you can have an amazing experience even when traveling on a dime.

Fantastic Places in Cool Japan :
How do you spend your winter time? Do what you like in a warm room. Go to the ski area. Or you may have various ways of spending, such as going to a hot spring.
There are so many fun things to do in winter, but there are events where you can enjoy this season. That is the “Tokamachi Snow Festival” held in Tokamachi, Niigata Prefecture.
The Tokamachi Snow Festival is so popular that about 300,000 people visit during the event. Snow statues, carnivals, local cuisine, and sporting events are held here.
Among them, “carnival” is the main event.

Tsunan Yuki Matsuri 2018
This is the snow festival of Tsunan, one of the world’s most prominent areas for heavy snowfall. You can ride snowmobiles, go on a treasure hunt in the snow, and have fun in ways that are only possible when you have this much snow, and there are also sky lanterns.

One of the best days of cycling last year, along the Uono river. While going up hill, it was so smooth that I was able to keep a really high pace.
