Arrival in Kii-Tanabe, staging for the Kumano-Kodo Nakahechi route
It took us two and a half days to travel from San Diego to Kii-Tanabe, the gateway to the Kumano-Kodo.
We used Lyft to get to the airport and then, because we were using American Airlines and frequent flier miles, we had to fly backwards and spend the night near Dallas Fort Worth airport before catching a second flight to Narita airport.
At Narita airport, after exchanging our Japan rail pass vouchers for passes and withdrawing cash from the ATM (and misplacing a zero, so we began withdrawing 10X more money than we'd planned) we caught a bus to Tokyo and walked to the hotel I'd booked, the Sotetsu Fresa Nihombashi.
The next morning, on our walk to Tokyo train station, we passed the beginning of a procession dedicated to fat-bottomed women (at least that's what we were told). From Tokyo station we took the Nozomi Shinkansen to Shin-Osaka and thence an Express train to Kii-Tanabe, where we're spending two nights at Ichie Cafe, a traditional Japanese lodging with tatami floor mats and paper-thin walls.
In Kii-Tanabe we had to go searching for a new sun hat to replace the one I lost in Tokyo station, then we visited the Tokei-jinja shrine dedicated to memorializing the epic battle for the control of Kii-Tanabe that was decided by the outcome of a cock fight, red vs white cocks, a Budhist temple and met Mike Rhodes, an American ex-pat who works at the tourist office, for lunch.
We walked down to the waterfront and partook in a salt water hand-purification ritual preparatory to walking the Kumano-Kodo.

First Trip to Wakayama: Log Rafting 8/2010
We went to Wakayama by bus to cross the Tanise Bridge which is 300m long and 54m high. From Nagoya by bus it took 5hours to get there. Quite the winding road! Yoko got car sick. From there we went to Kitayama in Mie to see Yunomine Onsen, the oldest hotspring in Japan and a world heritage sight, and then we went rafting down the Kuma (bear) River (Kumanogawa) on log rafts. Pretty cool and not too scary. We stayed at the Yunominesou Japanese Inn (Ryokan). They have dogs that you can take for a walk! Here is the link to that hotel:
