Kōenji Awa-Odori (高円寺阿波おどり) is one of Tokyo’s largest summer street festivals with up to 12,000 dance team participants and over 1.2 million visitors over the two day event.
Held on the last weekend of August in and around the neighbourhood of Kōenji, Suginami the Awa Dance Festival is the largest of its kind outside of Tokushima Prefecture.
The dance is performed by dance troupes, referred to as Ren (連) group of up to 100 musicians and dancers advancing in lines along the local streets to the accompaniment of shamisen, drums, flutes and cymbals. The dance troupes are mixed both in age and gender with women showcasing intricate formation dance steps wearing traditional yukata, geta and straw amigasa hats.
Local community groups and schools take part in the festivities, but to keep performance standards high the Kōenji Awa-Odori also has a competition element leading to dance troupes from across Japan applying to participate.

Koenji Awa Odori is a huge street dance festival held annually on the last weekend of Aug. near Koenji Station (JR Chuo Line) and Shin-Koenji Station (Marunouchi Line) in Suginami Ward, Tokyo, Japan.
About 5,000 performers in about 80 dance troupes called ren perform on Sat. and Sun. evenings from 5 pm to 8 pm. This video shows 40 troupes on Sat. evening. Most troupes are based in Tokyo including a good number from Koenji. A few are from Tokushima where Awa Odori originated.

Tari Awa (阿波踊り Awa Odori) adalah tari asal Provinsi Awa (Prefektur Tokushima), Jepang yang ditarikan secara beramai-ramai di berbagai kota dan desa di Prefektur Tokushima untuk menyambut perayaan Obon. Setiap tahun tanggal 12-15 Agustus, tari Awa dilangsungkan di tengah kota Tokushima.
Penari Awa menari dalam kelompok-kelompok yang disebut ren sambil berpawai di jalan-jalan. Satu kelompok penari bisa terdiri dari lusinan penari. Tari Awa adalah sejenis Bon Odori. Penari wanita menari dengan posisi tubuh tegak dan tangan yang digerak-gerakkan di atas kepala. Pria menari dengan pinggul direndahkan, serta gerakan tangan dan kaki yang dinamis.
Musik pengiring menggunakan alat musik yang terdiri dari shamisen, perkusi (taiko dan tsuzumi), genta (kane), dan flute (yokobue). Lagu yang dimainkan adalah lagu populer dari zaman Edo yang berjudul Yoshikono. Liriknya berupa ajakan kepada penonton untuk turut menari, Erai yatcha, erai yatcha, yoi yoi yoi yoi, odoru ahō ni miru ahō, onaji ahō nara odorana son son. Lagu Yoshikono hanya digunakan untuk mengiringi kelompok tari Awa yang terkenal, sedangkan kelompok tari Awa yang lain menari dengan diiringi seruan Yatto sā Yatto saā.
Selain dipertunjukkan di Prefektur Tokushima, kelompok tari Awa asal Tokushima sering berkeliling di kota-kota besar di Jepang (khususnya di wilayah Kanto). Di distrik Suginami-ku, Tokyo, tari Awa diselenggarakan kuil Kōenji bersama pusat perbelanjaan di dekatnya.
Festival tari Awa sudah diselenggarakan sejak 400 tahun yang lalu, dan merupakan salah satu dari 3 matsuri terbesar di Shikoku. Tari Awa sering dikatakan berasal dari gerakan tari disertai pengucapan doa agama Buddha. Penjelasan lain mengatakan bahwa penguasa Istana Tokushima yang bernama Hachisuka Iemasa memerintahkan penduduk Tokushima untuk menari beramai-ramai setelah istana selesai dibangun. Menurut cerita yang lain, tari Awa mulai ditarikan orang sejak Tokushima dijadikan wilayah administrasi (han) tersendiri.
