Tolaga Bay is an interesting area, steeped in history. The huge wharf beside the camp was built in the 1920s and is said to be the longest concrete pier in the Southern Hemisphere.
The Tolaga Bay Wharf needs help - now! There must be hundreds of thousands of people in the world who have fished from, walked on, or tied up to this wharf in it's life time.
TOLAGA Bay 100-year anniversary of St Andrews Church

TOLAGA Bay celebrated the 100-year anniversary of its Anglican Church St Andrews with a centennial thanksgiving, baptism and confirmation service this morning.
An exhibition of past and present photos and digital images marking the changes in the East Coast township's community over more than a century is on display at the church and is open to the public.
Missioner to the East Coast parish Reverend Stephen Donald said the exhibition was part of the community's two-day Manawa Mai festivities, which was launched at Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Mangatuna yesterday to mark 125 years of education in the area.
The first Tolaga Bay school was erected in the 1870s and followed the first school at Waiomatatini in 1871 and Waipiro Bay shortly after.
It was situated on the south bank of the Uawa River on land gifted by the iwi elders.
The school was then a native school administered by the Native and Defence Department.
In 1888, 125 years ago, the school changed its status as a Native School to that of a European School and came under the Hawke's Bay Education Board.
The Tolaga Bay School at the western end of Monkhouse Street was the first European school on the East Coast north of Gisborne.
In 1951, a modern school was built by the Uawa River and is the present-day Tolaga Bay Area School.
Hundreds of people attended the Manawai Mai festivities at Tolaga Bay Area School, with a special cake-cutting ceremony one of many celebratory highlights carried out by 84-year-old Effie Tuapawa, the oldest former student of Tolaga Bay School still residing in Uawa, who enrolled as Awhi Puhipuhi in 1938.
Also lending a helping hand to the cake- cutting duties were Alison Cranswick, the longest-serving teacher at the school, who has been teaching there for 62 years and is still working part-time, and the youngest student Rangimarie Takurua.

Allow half an hour to walk to the end of New Zealand's longest wharf and back. At 660 metres in length, this is no ordinary pier. Locals love the wharf because it's part of Eastland history, and because it's a most excellent place to catch a fish.

Te Ahika celebrates creative community of Tolaga Bay
WHEN the ancestors of Te Aitanga a Hauiti arrived in Uawa many generations ago, they lit ‘Te Ahika’, the long burning fire, at the cove of Opoutama (Cook’s Cove). They named the place after an event in Hawaiki, the ancestral homeland. The fire signalled their arrival and a new life in their new home. Over the generations the flames of that heritage remained alight through a continued growth of the people and their stories.
Today the fire continues to burn and is being reimagined through a special project called “Te Ahika: Our Voice, Our Story, Our Place”. The initiative is being driven by Te Aitanga a Hauiti iwi and the Uawa community, and was launched at Hauiti Marae in Uawa, Tolaga Bay last week.
It has all of the hallmarks to celebrate the heritage and aspirations of the people and the area. But what makes it unique is that it is not one-dimensional. Te Ahika showcases the stories of Uawa past and present through various platforms: large-scale sculptures at significant heritage sites, exhibitions, outdoor pop-up art installations, digital recreations, environmental projects, workshops, gatherings and events.
These will be presented over the next two years as a build up to the 250th anniversary of the first encounters between Maori and Europeans in 1769, when Captain James Cook and his crew of The Endeavour arrived in the district.
A creative and innovative approach is embedded throughout the many aspects of Te Ahika, and is reflective of the characteristics and spirit of the Hauiti people, said Te Ahika chairperson Victor Walker. He said Te Ahika sets out to continue this legacy which comes from the renowned ancestral house of learning, Te Whare Wananga o Te Rawheoro.
