Te Ahika celebrates creative community of Tolaga Bay
WHEN the ancestors of Te Aitanga a Hauiti arrived in Uawa many generations ago, they lit ‘Te Ahika’, the long burning fire, at the cove of Opoutama (Cook’s Cove). They named the place after an event in Hawaiki, the ancestral homeland. The fire signalled their arrival and a new life in their new home. Over the generations the flames of that heritage remained alight through a continued growth of the people and their stories.
Today the fire continues to burn and is being reimagined through a special project called “Te Ahika: Our Voice, Our Story, Our Place”. The initiative is being driven by Te Aitanga a Hauiti iwi and the Uawa community, and was launched at Hauiti Marae in Uawa, Tolaga Bay last week.
It has all of the hallmarks to celebrate the heritage and aspirations of the people and the area. But what makes it unique is that it is not one-dimensional. Te Ahika showcases the stories of Uawa past and present through various platforms: large-scale sculptures at significant heritage sites, exhibitions, outdoor pop-up art installations, digital recreations, environmental projects, workshops, gatherings and events.
These will be presented over the next two years as a build up to the 250th anniversary of the first encounters between Maori and Europeans in 1769, when Captain James Cook and his crew of The Endeavour arrived in the district.
A creative and innovative approach is embedded throughout the many aspects of Te Ahika, and is reflective of the characteristics and spirit of the Hauiti people, said Te Ahika chairperson Victor Walker. He said Te Ahika sets out to continue this legacy which comes from the renowned ancestral house of learning, Te Whare Wananga o Te Rawheoro.

#11 Tolaga Bay to Tokomaru Bay Epic East Coast Ride
Day 2, leaving Tolaga Bay and making my way to Tokomaru Bay
I have just learned something... most of my resent videos on the big ride I did around the East Cape of New Zealand has VERY BAD Audio... which did my head in because before I left, I got a new helmet and mic... and expected awesome quality audio... But in watching the video on my helmet unboxing and setup... I have realised that I mounted the double ended mic right behind chin bar on the new helmet. The video shows that the chin bar has an air vent in the front... Now I have come to the realisation that I have mounted the double ended microphone right behind an air vent... so as the speed gets up, so will the air flow through the vent right onto the microphone... ok... I have moved it to a new location so should be ok now...

#10 Tolaga Bay Epic East Coast Ride New Zealand
The beginning of Day 2, leaving Gisborne and heading to Tolaga Bay on the East Coast of New Zealand’s North Island. The most amazing white/golden sand beaches. Low surf, so great for swimming or fishing… Beautiful blue Pacific Ocean…

NZ#7 Tolaga Bay - WWOOFing in the middle of nowhere
collect happy moments like seashells for they may be gone in an instant!
first time trying out a WWOOFing host. Basically, it's the same idea as HelpX.
Unfortunately my 'host dad' had to work somewhere else and we didn't find enough time (also because the weather wasn't very nice) to work together so that he could teach me more about natural horsemanship. (here you can see him work:
Still, I had a fantastic time! No internet, no nothing but heaps of animals and nature!! What a shame I didn't catch the best moments on camera! but you have to go there yourself! It's very beautiful out there!

Man missing after jumping off Tolaga Bay Wharf
A search is under way for a 38-year-old Asian male, missing off the Tolaga Bay Wharf, a popular tourist attraction 50km north of Gisborne on the East Coast. The missing man is one of two people who were jumping off the wharf. The companion raised the alarm at about 2.30pm when the man did not surface after jumping in.
The Tolaga Bay Wharf is a popular East Coast tourist spot for fishing and sightseeing. Over the summer months hundreds of people jump off the end and climb back up a ladder on one of the piles. The 660-metre wharf has been extensively restored in recent years.
