The Steepest A-Road in the UK! - Porlock Hill - 2 Up Fully Loaded
Take a look at the steepest gradient A-Road in the UK. Porlock Hill climbs approximately 725ft in just under a mile and to a total of 1300ft in under 2 miles.
Located on the The Atlantic Highway (A39) between Minehead and Lynmouth. This forms a tiny section of a very nice road between Somerset and Cornwall.
This was shot by my glamorous assistance (The Boss) whilst on an overnight camping trip to exmoor.

Porlock Toll road on a Harley.
The lovely 4.2-mile scenic route from Porlock towards Lynton dates from the 1840s and was built to offer a more gentle alternative to the infamously steep Porlock Hill.
The road was dug out manually to provide work for local people following the Napoleonic Wars. Tolls were then taken at the bottom of the hill by staff at The Ship Inn and there used to be a tollgate opposite what is now the village hall. At busy times of the day staff would run out from the bar to deal with travellers; at less busy times one of the boys would sit by the gate.
Today, starting in Porlock, some two miles from Porlock Weir, the scenic route twists through idyllic woodland, offering tantalising glimpses through the trees to Porlock Bay. As the road climbs, never at more than 1 in 14, it passes the toll house where a modest toll is collected.
As the trees thin, the panoramic splendour of the Somerset coast is revealed, with vistas across the Bristol Channel towards Swansea and the Gower Peninsiula. The road clings to the hillside through open moorland dotted with heather, gorse and whortleberry bushes, joining the A39 by the AA Box at Pitt Combe Head.
Ever since the early days of motoring Porlock has enjoyed a unique place in the history of motor sport. It forms one of the most exciting stages in the Somerset Stages Rally which takes place each spring. Back in the 1960s it was used as an RAC Rally stage, one of the fastest drivers at the time being the late Pat Moss – sister of Stirling Moss – who completed it in 3min 56sec
Today the road is used not only by traffic wishing to avoid Porlock Hill, but also by cyclists, walkers and people who just want to enjoy the sensational views. There are several stopping places and a picnic area.

Biking Porlock Hill Toll Road
Me on my Yamaha WR250X while on holiday in Somerset, found an awesome toll road just off of the VERY steep Porlock hill. Amazing road if a bit scary on a bike due to mossy road conditions making it slippy.

Cycling up Porlock Hill A39 - The UK's 4th toughest hill
I recently had the chance to tackle Porlock Hill on the A39 while carrying out a recce of a new route for day 1 of The Wrong Way Back 2017.
This was mine and Shane's first attempt of tackling the hill and it did feel like we where walking the green mile when we left the campsite.
The first thing that hits you long before the gradients of the hill kick in is the smell of over heating vehicle brakes.
One thing to look out for is the cattle grid near the top of the climb.
Keep a £1 handy for the decent back down the toll road and also take care on the bends as they can get slippery in the wet due to moss blinding up on the sheltered bends.
So if you have been wanting to do this climb and are putting it off I would say go for it as you won't be disappointed when you make it to the top.
