WA.NT Trip Part 4 | Litchfield National Park | NT
Litchfield National Park is a stunning bit of real estate, and only two hours from Darwin! We head into the park on the Reynolds River 4x4 Track, going through a couple of sandy bottom river crossings, most other roads in the park are sealed.
While in Litchfield we visit some of the most stunning waterfalls including Florence falls, Wangi falls and Tjaynera/Sandy Creek Falls. We also get lost in the Lost City and cool off in Buley Rockhole.

After spending a couple of days travelling in and out of Darwin having to buy a new fridge for the car, we began to drive the only way you can from Darwin, south! The entrance to Litchfield National Park via a partially unsealed road off the Cox Peninsula Road were four wheel drive is recommended. Litchfield National Park opened in 1986 is around 100km south of Darwin and attracts over a quarter of a million visitors each year. Aboriginal people have lived throughout the area for thousands of years. It is important to the Kungarakan and Marranunggu peoples. There are several sacred and special sites within the park.
We camped close to the base of the Cascades, when we visited the Lower Pool was closed and path was being rebuilt after the wet season. However the Upper Pool was still open, it was a tough 20-30 minute hike to the swimming holes where we were able to have a refreshing dip at 8AM it was already humid and in the high 20s. Not bothering to drying off we hoped we might be kept slightly cooler on the walk back down the rocky trail. Next we drove to maybe the most popular and definitely the most accessible attraction in the park Wangi Falls, not open for swimming due to heavy rain. The sun was now high and after rescuing someone (letting them use our compressor for there flat tyre) we took a short drive to Tolmer Falls. Possible to get closer than we did but not sensible in the midday heat we decided to jump into Buley Rockhole to cool off. The Rockhole was busy, it was the beginning of the easter holidays and it seemed as if everyone in the Northern Territory as well as 3 coach tours had the same idea as us! The last swimming location was at the beautiful Florence Falls, again busy but slightly further from the car park and down 100 steps at least put a few people off. Finally we visited the Magnetic termite mounds built by thousands of termites with a north-south orientation to control the temperature inside the mounds.
We were keen to do the 4x4 Southern Access Track down to the Daly River Road, unfortunately the track and all the sites along it were closed.

Wangi Falls - Litchfield National Park
The Wangi Falls campground is a large camping area with numerous sites. Payment is made at the paystation and the falls and plungepool is incredible. You can swim here however just after the wet season it will be closed due to water levels. You can reach this camping area with 2WD.
There are hot showers and flushing toilets, picnic tables and fires are permitted. This is really a great spot.
