Saint Alphonsa (19 August 1910 – 28 July 1946) was a Syro-Malabar Catholic Franciscan nun who is now honoured as a saint. Sister Alphonsa became the first native Indian saint, canonised in 2008. She was the first woman of Indian origin to be canonised as a saint by the Catholic Church, and the first canonised saint of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, an Eastern Catholic Church of the Saint Thomas Christian community.

Saint Alphonsa's tomb | Bharananganam | Kottayam
This small town is known as Lisieux of India after the birthplace of St. Theresa of Lisieux in France, The thousand year old St. Mary's Syro-Malabar Catholic Church here is one of the famous pilgrim centers of the Christians in Kerala. Also known as Anakkallu Palli, it is the place holding the mortal remains of Saint Alphonsa (1910–1946). Saint Alphonsa is the first woman to be conferred sainthood from the Kerala Church, which traces its origins to the visit of St. Thomas around 2,000 years ago to preach the gospel in India, and the second Indian to get that status after St Gonsalo Garcia. The death anniversary of Saint Alphonsa, which falls on 28 July is an important day for the devotees. Every year on this day, thousands of devotees visit this holy shrine, where the mortal remains of the saint is preserved, to pray and seek her blessings.

She has been a very special saint. She hasn't done any extraordinary deeds or something but she found her own way to salvation...through suffering. Like she accepted suffering with pleasure and she continued to dedicate all her sufferings for the cause of the poor or the cause of the sinners.

During her short life Sister Alphonsa Muttathupadathu exemplified saintly qualities by showing compassion and selfless service for the poor despite her own suffering and pain.

A Roman catholic nun from Kerala will become India's first woman saint on October 12 after she is canonised by Pope Benedict XVI at a special mass at the Vatican.
Sister Alphonsa Muttathupadathu died in 1946 at the age of 36.
She was born on August 19, 1910, in Annakutty in Kudamalur, a village in Kottayam district in Kerala, to Joseph and Mary Muttathupadathu.
Sister Alphonsa was beatified in 1986 by Pope John Paul II during his visit to Kerala .

Sister Alphonsa to be declared saint
On the October 12 this year, Sister Alphonsa will become the second Indian to be officially declared a saint by the Vatican. The date was decided at a meeting in Vatican on Sunday. NDTV visited the convent in Bharnanganam where Sister Alphonsa spent most part of her life. It is said that a physically challenged boy was cured of his deformity after praying at Sister Alphonsa's tomb.
