Cyrus the Great tomb in Pasargad, Iran.MPG
The tomb of Cyrus the Great located in Pasargad in Iran one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The most important monument in Pasargadae is the tomb of Cyrus the Great. It has six broad steps leading to the sepulchre, the chamber of which measures 3.17 m long by 2.11 m wide by 2.11 m high, and has a low and narrow entrance. Though there is no firm evidence identifying the tomb as that of Cyrus, Greek historians tell us that Alexander III of Macedon believed it was so. When Alexander looted and destroyed Persepolis, he paid a visit to the tomb of Cyrus. Arrian, writing in the second century of the common era, recorded that Alexander commanded Aristobulus, one of his warriors, to enter the monument. Inside he found a golden bed, a table set with drinking vessels, a gold coffin, some ornaments studded with precious stones and an inscription of the tomb. No trace of any such inscription survives to modern times, and there is considerable disagreement to the exact wording of the text. Strabo reports that it read:
Passer-by, I am Cyrus, who gave the Persians an empire, and was king of Asia.
Grudge me not therefore this monument.

Pasargad-Iran- Private Palace of Cyrus the Great
Pasargad or Pasargadae, the capital of Cyrus the Great (559–530 BC) and also his last resting place, was a city in ancient Persia, and is today an archaeological site. It is located on highway between Isfahan and Shiraz; about 50 km from Takht-e-Jamshed and 120 km from Shiraz. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cyrus the Great began building this city in 546 BCE; it was unfinished when he died in battle, in 530. The remains of the tomb of Cyrus' son and successor, Cambyses II, have been found in Pasargadae, near the fortress of Toll-e Takht, and identified in 2006. Beside an impressive building of the tomb of Cyrus the Great, other important buildings spread in the area of Pasargad include the Tall-e-Takht, a gigantic stone platform perhaps intended for the foundation of a great palace; and the Zendan-e-Suleiman or Prison of Solomon (Persian name Burj-e-Sangi), a tall windowless building, Private Palace of Cyrus the Great, Muzaffari Karvansarai, Royal Gardens, Kooshak, Gateway Palace, Audience Hall (Diwan-e-Aam), etc. It is a full day excursion from Shiraz to visit Persepolis (3-4 hours), Naqsh-e-Rustam (2 hours) and Pasargad (4 hours) in addition to 2-hour one way journey time. The royal ensemble occupies the central area of Pasargadae. It consists of several palaces originally located within a garden ensemble (called 'Four Gardens'). The Residential Palace of Cyrus II was built 535-530 BCE; its hypostyle hall has five rows of six columns. In later periods, Tall-e Takht continued to be used as a fort, whereas the palaces were abandoned and the material was reused.

Tomb of Cyrus the Great (Pasargadae)
Cyrus the Great (600 – 530 BCE) was a towering figure in the history of mankind. As the father of the Iranian nation, he was the first world leader to be referred to as “The Great”. Cyrus founded the first world empire – and the second Iranian dynastic empire (the Achaemenids) – after defeating the Median dynasty and uniting the Medes with the other major Iranian tribe, the Persians. Cyrus’ spectacular conquests triggered the age of Empire Building, as carried out by his successors as well as by the later Greeks and Romans.
Iran Naqsh e Rustam
Naqsh-e Rustam (in Persian: نقش رستم Nāqš-e Rostām) is an archaeological site located about 12 km northwest of Persepolis, in Fars province, Iran. Naqsh-e Rustam lies a few hundred meters from Naqsh-e Rajab.
The oldest relief at Naqsh-i Rustam is severely damaged and dates to c. 1000 BCE. It depicts a faint image of a man with unusual head-gear and is thought to be Elamite in origin. The depiction is part of a larger mural, most of which was removed at the command of Bahram II. The man with the unusual cap gives the site its name, Naqsh-e Rostam, Picture of Rostam, because the relief was locally believed to be a depiction of the mythical hero Rostam.
Four tombs belonging to Achaemenid kings are carved out of the rock face. They are all at a considerable height above the ground.
The tombs are known locally as the 'Persian crosses', after the shape of the facades of the tombs. The site is known as salīb in Arabic (صليب), perhaps a corruption of the Persian word chalīpā, cross. The entrance to each tomb is at the center of each cross, which opens onto to a small chamber, where the king lay in a sarcophagus. The horizontal beam of each of the tomb's facades is believed to be a replica of the entrance of the palace at Persepolis.
One of the tombs is explicitly identified by an accompanying inscription to be the tomb of Darius I (r. 522-486 BCE). The other three tombs are believed to be those of Xerxes I (r. 486-465 BCE), Artaxerxes I (r. 465-424 BCE), and Darius II (r. 423-404 BCE) respectively. A fifth unfinished one might be that of Artaxerxes III, who reigned at the longest two years, but is more likely that of Darius III (r. 336-330 BCE), last of the Achaemenid dynasts.
The tombs were looted following the conquest of the Achaemenid empire by Alexander the Great.
