PENYAMBUNG LIDAH RAKYAT
INDONESIA: CROWDS VISIT BUNG SUKARNO'S GRAVE
Indonesian/Nat
Crowds have flocked to the grave of Sukarno, Indonesia's first president, in the East Java city of Blitar.
Indonesians went to Sukarno's grave on Sunday to venerate the father of Megawati Sukarnoputri, leader of the P-D-I Struggle party, which looks set to win the latest election.
Meanwhile, supporters of the P-D-I Struggle party are concerned that Megawati may be prevented from becoming President by a Muslim coalition calling for a male to lead the government.
Tens of thousands of people commemorated the 29th anniversary of the death of Indonesia's founding president on Sunday.
People poured into Blitar, about 650 kilometres (400 miles) east of Jakarta, by every mode of transport available to visit the grave site of Sukarno.
Sukarno died in disgrace, but his popularity has risen with the political fortunes of his daughter Megawati Sukarnoputri.
It was not clear if Megawati would join the adoring throngs on Sunday.
She's involved in the wrangling that has heated up amidst the protracted vote count from the June 7 parliamentary election.
Her Indonesian Democratic Party for Struggle, or P-D-I-Struggle, holds a strong lead with half the votes counted, although it will not be able to command a majority in Parliament and is pursuing possible coalition partners.
There have been rumblings that the world's largest Muslim country might not accept a female head of state, who will be chosen later this year.
At the same time, those who made a pilgrimage to Sukarno's grave, protected by an elaborate glass-enclosed pavilion, chanted, prayed and cried as they carried copies of the Koran, Islam's holy book.
Of Indonesia's three presidents, Sukarno was the most charismatic, and some believe the most controversial.
Bloody turmoil and economic chaos were characteristic of his rule.
Known as Bung Karno, Brother Karno, he garnered support from the poor by whipping up nationalism with colorful rhetoric and brash diplomatic moves.
As a leader within the independence movement against the Dutch from 1927, he collaborated with occupying Japanese forces in World War II.
With their defeat, he declared independence from colonial rule in 1945.
After a four-year war to keep the Dutch from returning, Sukarno led the country through a turbulent experiment with democracy until 1959 when he imposed authoritarian rule.
He later became president for life.
He was removed from office after Suharto, then an army general, crushed what was said to have been a communist-backed coup attempt in 1965.
Stripped of power, Sukarno died in 1970.
He was honored with a state funeral and was buried in a simple grave that was replaced by an ornate monument in 1978 on Suharto's orders.
Now his image is being rehabilitated with P-D-I-Struggle's expected victory.
Many people only seemed to have come to venerate Sukarno because their party looks set to win the election.
SOUNDBITE: (Indonesian Bahasa)
The reason I came in here is because I'm very happy that PDI Struggle won in this election.
SUPER CAPTION: Iman Harmanfah
Several of those who came on Sunday were Megawati supporters.
If a Muslim coalition was to block her election as president, they say they will not accept another president.
Indonesia is a predominantly Muslim country and there have been suggestions that a large coalition might be able to block her presidency and elect a Muslim male.
SOUNDBITE: (Indonesian Bahasa)
We believe Megawati is going to be the President but if she cannot be the president we are the PDI Struggle supporters. We'll go to the Parliament and ask why she cannot be President and we're going to put a lot of pressure on them.
SUPER CAPTION: Awang Muhidin
Some people danced in the streets.

DAY 8 | Bung Karno's Grave and Penataran Temple | JAVA ROAD TRIP 2019
Java Road Trip DAY 7. The grave of Indonesia’s founding father, Sukarno or Bung Karno, has become a favorite destination for religious tourists visiting Blitar in East Java over the Idul Fitri holiday.
Although less popular than beaches and recreational parks in the area, the grave remains popular among those who uphold a tradition of ziarah during the religious holiday. Ziarah means visiting places considered to have divine or spiritual inspiration. Usually, people visit the graves of their family members or of public figures.
Penataran or Panataran (Indonesian: Candi Penataran) is one of the largest Hindu temple ruins complex in East Java, Indonesia.[1] It is located roughly 12 km northeast of Blitar, with the closest airport being farther away at Malang. Believed to have been constructed between the 12th century to the 15th century, the temple played a significant role in the Majapahit Kingdom, especially under King Hayam Wuruk. He considered his favorite sanctuary. Penataran dates from the Kediri era.
Candi Panataran is a Shiva (Siwa) temple. It is notable for including one the largest Indonesian collection of reliefs showing life stories of Hindu god Vishnu in different avatars. In particular, the temple site include the Rama story in the Javanese version of the epic Ramayana, as well Krishna story as depicted Triguna's Krishnayana epic poem. Comparative studies of reliefs related to Hindu epics at Penataran and Prambanan temple (Yogyakarta) complexes have attracted the attention of archaeologists

INDONESIA: THOUSANDS PAY THEIR RESPECTS AT SUKARNO'S GRAVESITE
Natural Sound
Hundreds of thousands of people emboldened by the new spirit of reform in Indonesia gathered to pay their respects at the gravesite of their country's founding father, Sukarno.
This weekend's gathering was the biggest of its kind for the founder of Indonesia's independence and state ideology known as Pancasilla.
Sidelined by former president Suharto in March 1966 after a failed Communist coup, Sukarno died under house arrest in Jakarta in 1970.
His family are still trying to clear his name.
Approximately 500-thousand people trooped to Blitar, the birthplace of Indonesia's founding father, to pay their respects.
The masses gathered to read the Koran, pray and visit Sukarno's grave while more than two-thousand soldiers and police stood guard.
Last year, about 20-thousand people gathered in this sleepy East Javan town for the anniversary.
Sukarno family members said the spirit of reform, in the wake of Suharto being replaced last month by his deputy B-J Habibie, helped boost the crowds this year.
Sukarno, the country's first president, was deposed in 1966 by former president Suharto.
He died in 1970 under house arrest as a political prisoner.
On the 28th anniversary of his death, Sukarno's family are still calling to have his name cleared.
His political active daughters Megawati Sukarnoputri and Rachmatwati Sukarnoputri had asked for the anniversary to be a family affair.
But sympathisers jammed the road in front of the Sukarno home and streets leading there to participate in prayers as well as to listen to speeches by his children.
Sukarno led the struggle for freedom from the Dutch colonial masters.
On 17 may 1945 he declared independence for the Republic of Indonesia.
Megawati Sukarnoputri, ousted minority party leader, left Blitar early on Sunday following prayers at the family's home.
According to a staff member Megawati paid a low key visit to her father's grave site.
Crowds had screamed and chanted in support of Megawati - remembering her father's spirit of independence and still supporting his ideology.
