Tomb of Emperor Tu Duc in Hue - Vietnam 4K Travel Channel
The tomb of Tu Duc is located 6 km outside of Hue. LangTu Duc is the burial site of the 4th emperor of the Nguyen dynasty. His reign lasted of 1847-1883 and was marked by uprisings and rebellions. He pursued a policy of isolation and persecuted Christians due to their faith. This called the resistance of the western countries on the plan and resulted in the cession of South Vietnam to the Frenchmen.
From 1864-1867, 3000 workers worked on the creation of the burial site. During Tu Doc's lifetime, it also served as a summer residence.
When you enter the complex, which is surrounded by a high wall, you see the artificial lake with an island in the middle. The emperor used the island as a place for meditation.
When we arrive, divers and workers had to fetch straight garbage and stones out of the muddy water.
Opposite the island is the Xung Khiem pavilion, which was used as a day room. Across a winding path along the lake we reach the honor courtyard via a few steps.
The courtyard is flanked by an elephant, a horse and Mandarin statues.
Directly behind is the stele pavilion. The glorious deeds of the ruler are listed on the stele. The stele is the largest artificial stone block in Vietnam.
Behind is the temple for the worship of the emperor and empress, with the relics of the couple.
A small pond in the middle completes the ensemble. By another gate we reach the real mausoleum which was held very simply.
In the middle of the oval you can see the powerful stone coffin.
On the way back we visit briefly the Summer Palace, which was used for ceremonial purposes. It is located on a small hill in front of the lake.

Best Of Live The Emperor's Tombs Of Vietnam Part II-Tu Duc
To experience what life would have been like for a Nguyen Emperor of Vietnam one must only visit their tomb. Like a reflection of their life each tomb leaves one with a sense of how the Emperor viewed his place in the world. The tomb of Tu Duc, approximately 5 kilometers outside of Hue, the former Imperial Capital, is one of the grandest of all with construction that took place over 3 years requiring 10,000 laborers. Tu Duc was the longest reigning Emperor of the Nguyen dynasty, holding power for 36 years from 1848-83. His tomb served as palatial retreat for himself, his wives, concubines, and entourage after it's completion in 1867. The tomb complex is filled with buildings, temples, a lake, a tiny island where he could hunt small game, pavilions for relaxing and writing poetry and expansive grounds. Tu Duc's remains were never actually buried at the site of the tomb where he had spent so much time. Instead they were placed in a mysterious location somewhere around Hue. To ensure secrecy, the 200 workers that buried Tu Duc's remains were beheaded afterwards. To this day this site has still not been discovered. It's hard to justify the tomb with the history of suffering and loss associated with it's creation. Furthermore the lives that were sacrificed in order to preserve a mysterious burial site. When I walked around the Tomb of Tu Duc while broadcasting live on Periscope it was truly hard not to appreciate it's beauty while marvelling at the craftsmanship, artistry, and design. Much more fitting than a legacy to one man is a belief that this site reflects the beauty of Vietnamese architecture, heritage, and the hard work and sacrifice of it's people. The day I broadcasted live on Periscope from the Tomb of Tu Duc, the temperatures were in the mid-thirties celsius. Before and after the broadcast I explored the tomb complex while capturing images and shooting video for future podcasts. Working in the heat was exhausting, I can't imagine how hard it must have been for the labourers who turned this landscape into an Emperor's paradise. THE TOMB COMPLEX OF TU DUC WAS BUILT BETWEEN 1864 AND 1867, WHILE THE EMPEROR WAS STILL ALIVE. IT IS A LARGE COMPLEX SET AROUND A LAKE THAT THE EMPEROR USED IT AS A SUMMER RESIDENCE. THE ENORMOUS EXPENSE OF THE TOMB AND THE FORCED LABOUR USED IN ITS CONSTRUCTION SPAWNED A COUP PLOT THAT WAS DISCOVERED AND SUPRESSED. THE TOMB ARCHITECTURE WAS DESIGNED TO WORK IN HARMONY WITH THE CAREFULLY MANICURED LANDSCAPE. THE VIETNAMESE PEOPLE SAY THAT TU DUC TOMB IS A MUST IN EVERY TOUR TO HUE CITY. FOR US WAS MORE THAN A HISTORY LESSON. THE VISIT WAS A REVELATION AND A DELIGHT FOR OUR SOULS AND EYES.

The Emperor You Duc 1848-83.
You Duc began planning his tomb long before his death The major portions of the tomb complex were completed in 1864-67
In Hue (Vietnam) where he built his tomb, the Emperor was able to hunt on the lake and on the small island in the middle of the lake. He was able to relax in the Xung Khiem Pavilion and recite or compose poems in the company of his concubines.
Despite the grandiosity of the site and the time here spent by Tu Duc, he was buried in another secret location somewhere in Hue. To keep the secret, the 200 workers who buried the king were beheaded. Until now, Tu Duc's true grave remains hidden.
Tu Duc Tomb in Hue, Vietnam
This is the final resting place of Tu Duc, one of the emperors of Nguyen dynasty. Not as big or grand as some of the royal tombs in China, nevertheless, it is still a grand palace befitting of a king for his after life. Nestled in a huge garden with man made lake, pavilions and structures, this place makes for a nice, serene walk. It cost about USD4 to enter the grounds. And only about 15 minutes drive from centre of Hue.
