The Tombs of the Kings and early Christians - Paphos, Cyprus [short film]
Short film by written, presented and directed by Theologian Simon Peter Sutherland.
Filmed at Paphos, Cyprus, Simon Peter explores the ancient site of the Tombs of the Kings and also its connection with the nearby Catacombs of St Solomoni.
At the Tombs of the Kings, of which Simon Peter refers to them in both the singular and plural sense, as The Tombs of the Kings (plural) and also The Tomb of the Kings (singular) of which early Christians from around the 1st - 4th centuries AD met for worship in singular tombs around this location and also for protection from the persecution lashed out upon them by the Romans.
It is likely that the early Christians met in one tomb at a time.
Acts 11:19-20 tells us that after Stephen was martyred some Christians travelled to Cyprus and preached to Jews only. In Greco-Roman times Paphos was the island's capital and it is likely that these Christians travelled there. However, it was not until Paul, Barnabus and Mark visited Paphos, Cyprus as written in Acts 13: 4-13 that the gospel was given to the Gentiles of which Paul, then Saul converted the Roman official.
Some believe that the Roman authorities were angry at Pauls conversion of the Proconsul Sergius Paulus and thus persecuted Christians at Paphos. Thus, it is for this reason that they went just outside the city walls and met in the ancient caves and tombs.
Evidence for this is found in the discoveries of crosses and Frescoes found in the burial chambers, which is regarded as proof that early Christians used these tombs during tribulations prior to the 4th century AD. Persecution of Christians was abolished by Roman Emperor Constantine who made Christianity the religion of Rome in 313 AD.

CYPRUS: Paphos Tombs of the Kings [HD]
The Tombs of the Kings is a large necropolis in Paphos. (A necropolis is a large ancient cemetery with elaborate tomb monuments.) It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The underground tombs, many of which date back to the 4th century BC, are carved out of solid rock, and are thought to have been the burial sites of Paphitic aristocrats and high officials up to the third century AD.
The name comes from the magnificence of the tombs; no kings were in fact buried here.
Some of the tombs feature Doric columns and frescoed walls. Archaeological excavations are still being carried out at the site. The tombs are cut into the native rock, and at times imitated the houses of the living.

The tombs of the kings in Paphos - Cyprus ???????? - Ryanair Cheap Flights
In part 3 of this Cyprus travel vlog series, we head to the Tombs of the Kings in Paphos to see what the fuss is about, after being recommended to head there by a friend.
What to do in Paphos? Well in winter, there's not a lot. I did film a lot more in the tombs of the kings, but the video would have lasted forever, so I cut it down. Enjoy!
I also give my view on Paphos and whether I'd recommend Cyprus as a holiday destination. Spoiler alert, probably not - there's not a lot to do there, but if you're looking for a beach holiday or a sun holiday, without spending too much money, then why not use Ryanair for cheap flights.
Ryanair offer really cheap flights around Europe, and we used their Liverpool to Paphos flight, which was such good value in December. Ryanair is like getting a bus. You get on, sit down, then get off - no frills and it's more comfortable than you think.
Ryanair cheap flights to Paphos at Christmas time seem to be an amazing deal considering that it's still hot in Cyprus at that time of the year! Save yourself some money and get away for December with Ryanair's cheap flights!

Tombs of the Kings Paphos, Cyprus walking tour 4k 60fps
The famous ‘Tombs of the Kings’ form part of the Archaeological Park of Kato Pafos (Paphos) - one of the most important archaeological sites of Cyprus that has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list since 1980.
The monumental underground tombs are carved out of solid rock and date back to the Hellenistic and Roman periods.
Rather than kings, it is actually high ranking officials and aristocracy that were buried here, but the size and splendour of the tombs – some decorated with Doric pillars - gave the locality its grand name.
Some of the tombs imitate the houses of the living, with the burial chambers opening onto a peristyle atrium. They are similar to tombs found in Alexandria, demonstrating the close relations between the two cities during the Hellenistic period.
The site links with the Aphrodite Cultural Route.
