New Mexico and Arizona: Mesilla, Bisbee, Tombstone, Casa Grande
In this video I continue rving from El Paso, Texas to Quartzsite, Arizona. I pass by historic Mesilla, near Las Cruces, New Mexico. Entering Arizona, I drive through Bisbee, one of America's quirkiest towns and super touristy, yet lots of fun Tombstone. Then I continue through Tucson, I stop briefly by the abandoned domes of Casa Grande, through Phoenix and eventually I reach Quatzsite, one week too late for the RTR.

Ghost Towns: Abandoned But Not Forgotten
These towns, often far off the beaten path and rooted in the mining industry, couldn't survive when the gold, silver, copper, and coal were gone. Check out the stories behind these boom-towns.

1. Goldfield, Arizona
Goldfield, Arizona, as the name suggests, was a gold town that thrived in the 1890s, but was abandoned by the late 1920s. Today, Goldfield has been reconstructed as a tourist stop, with a focus on kitsch rather than historical accuracy.
Rhyolite, Nevada
Rhyolite, Nevada was named for silica-rich volcanic rock in its corner of Death Valley, and saw significant investment from Charles M. Schwab in the early 20th century. By 1907, the town even had its own stock exchange, but its population dwindled in the years afterward.
Terlingua, Texas
Terlingua, Texas was built up around mercury mining in the mid-1880s, but was abandoned in the 1940s when production dwindled. Today, Terlingua is mostly a tourist destination for visitors to nearby Big Bend National Park.
Bodie, California
The town of Bodie, California was founded in 1859 and was once California's third-largest city behind San Francisco and Sacramento. The town closed in 1962 after the local gold mine stopped producing and has since become a attraction for tourists.
Thurmond, West Virginia
During the heyday of coal mining in West Virginia, Thurmond was a prosperous town, but its population dwindled into the single digits by the 2000s. Today, much of Thurmond is owned by the U.S. National Park Service.
Calico, California
Calico, California was a booming silver-mining town during the 1880s, but was totally abandoned by 1907. Calico underwent extensive restoration in the 1950s under the direction of Walter Knott, of Knott’s Berry Farm fame, and became a tourist attraction for the state.
Thistle, Utah
The primary industry was servicing steam trains for rail companies, and saw a decline during the switch-over to diesel engines. The real incident that killed the town, however, was a 1983 landslide that flooded the city. Much of it remains submerged today.
Virginia City, Montana
Virginia City, Montana was founded on gold mining in 1863, but the gold ran out by the end of the century and the town was abandoned. Today Virginia City is owned by the state of Montana, and serves as a tourist stop for travelers headed for Yellowstone National Park.
Kennecott, Alaska
The copper mine in Alaska produced $200 million worth of copper ore between 1911 and 1938, but was too remote to survive when the mine ran dry in the early 40s. Kennecott became a tourist landmark by the 1980s, and was designated a historic landmark.

EVERYWHERE USA 1960s TRAVELOGUE FILM CAPE COD / CAMPTOWN RACES / ABINGDON BARTER THEATER 68274
This late 1960s color travelogue film provides highlights of footage cut from other films in this series. It is narrated by Jack Douglas as part of the America! Television series. A clam bake in Cape Cod is sponsored by the Bass River Rod & Gun Club. Being prepared in baskets are clams, corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, hot dogs, and sausages. Stones are heated in a fire and covered with wet seaweed. The metal food baskets are placed on top and covered with a sheet. The lobsters are placed on that and covered with a wet canvas to keep the steam in. The sheet is pulled back to reveal cooked lobsters (1:29-3:27). The Christopher Ryder House is shown in Chatham. A hobo banjo band performs for diners (3:28-4:42). The Camptown Races in Ashland, Virginia have horse racing, clowns passing out balloons, and people relaxing on the lawn. An open picnic basket lid displays plates and real cutlery. On display is an operating steam engine. People lounge under large umbrellas or wear colorful headgear to block the sun. A bag of silver dollars is suspended above the finish line of the mule race (4:43-6:39). Old Fort Monroe imprisoned Jefferson Davis following President Lincoln’s assassination (6:40-7:33). The Abingdon Barter Theatre yearly rewards a Virginia ham, platter, and an acre of mountain land. Winners include Gregory Peck and Ernest Borgnine (7:34-9:14). The Leska Bros. Circus display is part of the Harry Hertsberg Circus Museum in San Antonio. A mechanical clown greets visitors. Displays include circus wagons, handbills, and Tom Thumb’s carriage (9:15-10:19). An Eastern diamondback rattlesnake shakes its rattle at Ross Allen’s Reptile Institute. A rattler is agitated and strikes and breaks a balloon (10:20-11:15). The Petrified Forest National Park has large petrified trees and a display of polished petrified tree cutaways. A couple walks on the Agate Bridge. Petroglyphs are on Newspaper Rock (11:16-13:57). Conquistadors built the San Xavier Mission. A cat and a mouse are carved into the stone façade (14:01-15:12). Shown are photos of Frank Lloyd Wright, inside and outside views of Taliesin West, Mrs. Wright, and architecture students in action (15:13-17:37). The Chapel of the Holy Cross is at Oak Creek Canyon near Sedona, Arizona (17:38-18:12). The Great Masterpiece in Lake Wales was an enormous mosaic of Da Vinci’s “Last Supper” painting (smuggled out of Europe to avoid Nazis but no longer in existence) (18:13-19:07). “The Lord’s Supper” can still be found in life-size wax figures at the Christian Art Museum in Fort Worth (19:08-20:02). The American Wax Museum life-size re-enactments include Indians and William Penn, the drafting of the Declaration of Independence, Washington crossing the Delaware, and Betsy Ross sewing an American flag. Also shown are John James Audubon, Edgar Allen Poe, and Walt Whitman (20:03-21:13). Sculptures shown at the Rodin Museum are the Monument to Balzac statue, Meditation, The hand from the Tomb, The Cathedral, and The Kiss (21:14-22:24). Photos, carbines, ammunition belts, and Indian weapons are displayed at the Custer Battlefield Visitor’s Center (22:25-23:32).

Lost Dutchman State Park AZ
While exploring Arizona this winter we got the chance to grab some open dates on the Lost Dutchman State Park website calendar. We had no idea what the temperatures would be in early December but we booked them anyway hoping to get in some good days for hiking. We were fortunate to get some cool but beautifully sunny days. We hope to come back in the future and do more hiking. After a stop at the visitors center, where we learned about the Apache Trail, we set out to explore this historic scenic route. We were amazed by the scenery. We recommend Lost Dutchman State Park highly and when you're done with your hike head out to explore the Apache Trail, you won't be disappointed.

America West: Bodie Ghost Town
This is Bodie, or rather the remains of Bodie. Only about five percent of the buildings it contained during its 1880s heyday still remain. Today, it stands just as time, fire and the elements have left it—a genuine California gold mining ghost town.
Designated a state historic park in 1962, it is now maintained in a state of arrested decay. Bodie was named after Waterman S. Body (also known as William S. Bodey), who discovered gold here in 1859. The change in spelling of the town's name has often been attributed to an illiterate sign painter, but it was a deliberate change by the citizenry to ensure proper pronunciation.
The town of Bodie rose to prominence with the decline of mining along the western slope of the Sierra Nevada. Prospectors crossing the eastern slope in 1859 to see the elephant—that is, to search for gold—made a rich discovery at Virginia City. This huge gold strike, later to be known as the Comstock Lode, started a wild rush to the surrounding high desert country.
By 1879 Bodie boasted a population of about 10,000 and was second to none for wickedness, badmen, and the worst climate out of doors. One little girl, whose family was taking her to the remote and infamous town, wrote in her diary: Goodbye God, I'm going to Bodie. The phrase came to be known throughout the West.
Killings occurred with monotonous regularity, sometimes becoming almost daily events. The fire bell, which tolled the ages of the deceased when they were buried, rang often and long. Robberies, stage holdups and street fights provided variety, and the town's 65 saloons offered many opportunities for relaxation after hard days of work in the mines. The Reverend F M. Warrington saw it in 1881 as a sea of sin, lashed by the tempests of lust and passion.
Nearly everyone has heard about the infamous Badman from Bodie. Some historians say that he was a real person by the name of Tom Adams. Others say his name was Washoe Pete. It seems more likely, however, that he was a composite. Bad men, like bad whiskey and bad climate, were endemic to the area. Whatever the case, the streets are quiet now. Bodie still has its wicked climate, but with the possible exception of an occasional ghostly visitor, its badmen are all in their graves.

The Paton Center
What used to be a private home in Patagonia is now a popular destination to people from all over the United States and other countries. Wally and Marion Paton were the owners of a house along Sonoita Creek where they began to feed hummingbirds and other wildlife. Soon it became well-known in the community and the word was spread around the world. After the Patons passed away, Tucson Audubon Society (TAS) was able to buy the property and it is now restoring the place for the enjoyment of additional visitors.

Dodge City
Dodge City is a pure definition of the Westa gateway to history that began with the opening of the Santa Fe Trail by William Becknell in 1821 and became a great commercial route between Franklin, Missouri and Santa Fe, New Mexico until 1880. Thousands of wagons traveled the Mountain Branch of the trail which went west from Dodge City along the north bank of the Arkansas River into Colorado. For those willing to risk the dangers of waterless sand hills, a shorter route called the Cimarron Cutoff crossed the river near Dodge City and went southwest to the Cimarron River. Fort Dodge was established in 1865 on the Santa Fe Trail, midway between two major Indian crossings on the Arkansas River. It was an important outpost on the western frontier, offering protection to wagon trains and serving as a supply base for troops engaged in Indian wars. Wild game was abundant, including vast herds of buffalo. Dodge City was founded in 1872, just five miles west of Fort Dodge. It quickly became a trade center for travelers and buffalo hunters. The same year, the railroad reached Dodge City, assuring its continued existence and making it a major shipping point. The town thrived and its populace of buffalo hunters, railroad workers, soldiers, and drifters settled their differences in shoot-outs. Lawlessness reigned, creating the need for a burial placeBoot Hill Cemetery. Dodge City was known as the wickedest little city in the west during the 1870s and 1880s. Notable lawmen such as Bat Masterson and Wyatt Earp became legends in their own time as they fought to establish law and order on the streets of Dodge City.
Relive the wild west as you stroll along the old Dodge Citys boardwalk. Tour Dodge City, Fort Dodge, and the Santa Fe Trail on the Dodge City Trolley.
For more information about Dodge City, contact the Dodge City Convention & Visitors Bureau, (620) 225-8186, 1-800-653-9378, e-mail cvb@dodgecity.org, or visit visitdodgecity.org.
