Tomintoul is a village in the Moray council area of Scotland; until 1975 it was in the county of Banffshire. It is said to be the highest village in the Scottish Highlands, but at 345 m is still much lower than the highest village in Scotland. The village was laid out on a grid pattern by the 4th Duke of Gordon in 1775. It followed the construction, twenty years previously, of a military road by William Caulfeild – now the A939. By 1841 the parish reached a population of 1,722. In 1951 this had fallen to just 531. The 2001 census reveals a village population of 322 with the total parish population now unavailable.

The 2004 film One Last Chance starring Kevin McKidd and Dougray Scott was filmed in the village and the areas around it. Despite its small size, it is on the famed Whisky Trail, which also includes Dufftown, Keith, Tomnavoulin, and Marypark. The surrounding countryside forms the Glenlivet Estate Tomintoul Golf Club (now defunct) was founded in 1897. The club and course disappeared at the time of WW2.

The Gordon Arms Hotel saw significant improvement in the 1990s when it was lavished with funds from the media-styled 'Lord Tony Williams'. It is a myth that villagers referred to Tony Williams as 'Lord': this was a media invention. Chiefly of interest to genealogists, James Stuart (1791–1874), a local farmer at Lynchork (pronounced Linnahork) appears in a number of birth, baptism, death and Kirk Session records in this and surrounding parishes as the admitted or reputed father of children of his female servants.

Grigor Willox was a reputed white witch who lived in Tomintoul in the 18th century. He was said to derive his powers from two amulets: a brass hook from a kelpie's bridle and a mermaid's crystal. Among his alleged powers were making cows produce milk, curing barren women, and detecting thieves.

Grantown-on-Spey is a town in the Highland Council Area, historically within the county of Moray. Grantown on Spey was founded in 1765 as a planned settlement on a low plateau at Freuchie beside the river Spey at the northern edge of the Cairngorm mountains, about 20 miles south east of Inverness (35 miles by road). Originally called simply Grantown after Sir James Grant, on Spey was added by the burgh council in 1898.

There are no rail services to Grantown. The closest main line stations are Aviemore and Carrbridge from which trains travel North/South between Inverness and the central belt. There is also a station at Forres from which trains run between Inverness and Aberdeen. The Strathspey Railway is a heritage railway which currently runs between Aviemore and Broomhill (nr Nethy Bridge) via Boat of Garten. There is a proposal to extend this railway to Grantown.

The town is twinned with Notre-Dame-de-Monts in the Vendée, Pays-de-la-Loire, France, and Grant Town, West Virginia in the United States. Since 2011, Grantown-on-Spey has been home to Shinty club Strathspey Camanachd. There is a small museum located in Burnfield Avenue near one of the town's three free car-parks.

Meet the Jacobites - Highland Company of 1745 filmed at Crathes Castle, Scotland, May 2017

Jacobite Highland Regiment 1745 at their camp in the ground of Crathes Castle, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. This was part of the Castle Jacobite weekend in May 2017 with members of Alan Breck's Prestonpans Volunteer Regiment, East Lothian and Dillon's Regiment from the Lakelaw Society. Ballater Railway Station walk-through

We handed over a high-profile, multi-million pound project to restore Ballater Old Royal Station in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

The company was appointed to the project through Aberdeenshire Council’s Main Contractor Framework after the original station was almost completely destroyed in a fire in May 2015.

The listed building is located near Balmoral Castle and was historically used by the Royal Family during their visits to the area. Although the station ceased operations in 1966, for the last 15 years it has been leased to Scotland’s national tourism agency, VisitScotland, for use as a tourist information centre and a museum celebrating the station's history.

Heading t'up North on the R1200GS Part 1 - I visit World War II RAF locations in Lincolnshire

Made these recordings last summer before I had the mike for my GoPro in the helmet, so have left those bits out for this section on my journey to Cumbria and Yorkshire.
RAF East Kirkby The Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Museum has the wonderful Avro Lancaster NX611 'Just Jane' which is in full working order and does regular taxi rides for visitors. I think that they are hoping one day to get her a ticket to fly again.
