Vlog 1~Laud: Philadelphia to Cascais, Portugal
DAY ONE: the flight.
The day has finally come! We have all embarked on a 9 day escapade through the two countries of Portugal and Spain. How lucky are we that we get to see not just one, but two countries?
The day all began at 4:15 p.m. (or 4:30- you know who you are!) when we had to be at the flag pole to leave for the airport. The exhilaration and anticipation of what these next 9 days had in store took up more room in my chest than I think the “extra” outfits in my suitcase. As we all boarded the bus and waved back to Mom & Dad, it seemed as if the world was our oyster in that moment- foreshadowing the week to come. So, Mom and Dad, brothers and sisters, the dog, and best friends, we will miss you dearly, but we have some pretty cool things to look forward to.
The buses were split into Bus 1 with Mr. Alzamora and Bus 2 with Mr. Raineri. There is always a hidden rival on who scored the best bus- personally, it’s Bus 2, I can feel it already! We didn’t hit much traffic, surprisingly since it was a Friday at 5 p.m.- the epitome of the perfect Jersey Shore adventure (just kidding!) We got to the airport, checked our bags, stood in line- well, the new line we would shortly become everywhere we went, went through TSA, grabbed a bite to eat, and waited until boarding time. As we all had full bellies, happy hearts, and excitement in our eyes, they told us our flight would be delayed so they could clean it- I guess we could have worse! After that delay, we slowly started falling asleep- very bad if you want to TRY (emphasis on the try) to sleep on the plane. After 30 grueling minutes, another delay occurred because it was too hot! I guess they didn’t understand we signed up to be in Europe, in July, when it’s nearly 105 degrees! We can handle the heat, just get us on the plane! Once 11:00 struck, the beautiful sound of the loud speaker said, “let’s go to Lisbon”! So, here we are, on our way, the moment we have all been waiting for! So, bye for now! Let’s see what Lisbon has in-store for Methacton ✈️
DAY TWO: Estoril, Portugal
Olá from Portugal! The beautiful sights and long hills are a great way to begin this journey. Unfortunately due to the delay, our schedule got mixed up this morning. The original plan was to have breakfast at the hotel and have a relaxing day seeing the hotel pool and the beach. Here in Estoril we are a block from the beach. Once we got off the plane, felt the Portugal air, and saw what our next two days had in store, we were all ready to drop our bags and run straight to the beach- which we did, just few hours later!
Ricardo and Mateo met us at the airport. They are our EF tour guides. Fortunately, we’ve had the privilege of having them for multiple trips. Bus 2 and Bus 1 are staying at different hotels, but not too far from one another. As we got on the bus we were told our options for the day: grab a bite to eat by the water, put your bathing suit on, just relax, or walk around and experience the culture of the neighborhood. How hard could that be? It was the perfect opportunity after a long flight.
After being checked in, bags dropped off, a change of outfit, we all were ready to depart our own ways to explore the day. Mr. Alzamora and Mr. Raineri set a precedent that we remain careful and safe, but we can explore. It is very special knowing you can travel and explore independently from your group- if you so choose, always with a buddy or two, and under circumstances!
Some decided to hit the beach and jump off the pier into the crystal blue waters, others grabbed their first bite of fish, and some decided to walk the little town. The locals here are welcoming and very relaxed. I suppose that comes naturally when you live in a beach town. I think this place could be on House Hunters International- HGTV it’s a must see!
Our first dinner went well. Don’t worry- we are eating, and eating WELL! It was buffet style, so help yourself. From the fresh fruit and vegetable salads, to the pork and grouper- we all could find something we enjoyed.
As the day progressed and we saw Portugal, we were all excited for the next days to come. Our tour guide said that tomorrow would be the longest day of the trip. Wake up at 7, dinner at 10 p.m., Fado, Monastery, and so many other great adventures. Here, you know, in Europe the days are long, dinners are long, but most importantly the memories we capture will remain for long. It is only 9 p.m. and our bodies are tired, so Adeus (Goodbye) as the Portuguese would say! Here’s to tomorrow’s adventure!

As always, it would not be a proper summer if we don't spend some time in lovely sunny Spain. Besides the fun on the beach, we tested our fear with some canyoning and jumping from rocks.
Stay tuned for Part 2 of our Iberian Adventure where we continue to Portugal.

Lisbon: what NOT to do when visiting Belem Tower ????
Visiting Portugal in winter means a high chance of getting rained out. After a big night out, I schlep (hung over) to Belem to visit the historic tower, and get blown away by the sudden onset of a rainstorm. Featuring some high quality knowledge insights for your viewing pleasure, and a surprise cameo from the wonderful Corina with well wishes from Amsterdam.

Lisbon!
My desire to visit Lisbon was enormous and expectations were high, but still, this city managed to surprise me and leave the greatest impression ???? Although Lisbon was the first city where I got lost ????
With Lisbon it was love at first sight - I even had this weird feeling that this city is unbelievably familiar..
All of the time I felt like I was dreaming, but at the same time I’ve never felt so awake. The first day was basically just staring around, not believing, smiling and enjoying ???? Also, it was exciting to have a city tour with a person, who told me about Lisbon so much before ( and who is the most patient Portuguese teacher as well) :))
I loved that city felt alive - everything and everybody was moving. This struck me especially when Marat and Dana came to Lisbon - they seemed SO energetic and they were radiating happiness all over the place :DD
People are indeed very warm - I felt welcome everywhere. People seemed very friendly and helpful - once a lovely couple helped me to find a way to the metro when I got lost (they walked with me for more than 10 minutes in a hight tempo).. And a nice lady agreed to send my postcard when I was getting on the plane!
Our mornings with breakfasts on the balcony were more than pleasant. Good start of the day :))
Every day was so different yet so special. I loved just wandering around, occasionally getting a bit lost, finding some great places (like Lx Factory) and meeting people. Riverside was just the best! :))
The day at Sintra was great, we were bicycling up and down the hills, enjoying nature and castles.. Oh, and our first swim in the ocean! ???? Definitely, we needed more time in Sintra.
I had a feeling that it’s not enough, I should come back for sure..

Mirpuri Foundation Racing Team - Boat Launch Party
The Mirpuri Foundation Racing Team has ‘baptised’ its VO65 Ocean Race Boat ‘Racing for the Planet’, in a dance-filled ceremony at the Marina de Cascais, in Portugal.
The spectacular launch was attended by over 300 guests, including VIPs and key figures from the yacht-racing world, Portuguese Government, local dignitaries and journalists. Paulo Mirpuri, President of the Mirpuri Foundation, Richard Brisius, President of The Ocean Race, Gonçalo Esteves, President of the Cascais Naval Club, Joana Balsemão, City Councilor of Cascais and João Paulo Rebelo, Portuguese Secretary of State for Youth and Sport made the honor speeches to the audience. There was also a speech from Bruno Dubois, special advisor to the team owner and winner of the last edition of the Ocean Race, and that is helping Paulo Mirpuri to put a very strong team together.
The event began with guests soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying cocktails at Palácio da Cidadela in Cascais, and enjoying a video presentation on the Ocean Race itself and what the Mirpuri Racing Team were facing on their global adventure.
Then the entire launch party made their way, in a sailor-style parade, to the boat, in the events-zone of the Marina, and formalities reached their peak. At this point all eyes turned to the boat, who officially was christened the vessel “Racing for the Planet’ with a traditional Champagne spray.
To great applause, the boat was launched to the ocean and the party exploded into life with close to 50 dancers and musicians springing into action as the Marina’s events-zone was suddenly transformed into a big celebration.
